  1. I think it's a whole ball of lack of self awareness, tendency to judge, insecurity about one's own choices, wanting to validate (or have validated) our own choices, and lots of other things. In short -- human nature.
  2. Many, many years ago when I was a brand new homeowner I took in two large stray dogs. It took a bit of time (and saving) to get a fence put up, and . . sometimes they went walkabout. There was a cornfield behind the house. They'd pull up stalks, drag them into the yard, eat the corn and play with the stalks. The never got the carnivore memo, either. The farmer got a wee bit upset, even though I offered to pay.
  3. Kitty seems unrepentant. 😉
  4. As unbelievable and absolutely crazy crazy as it seems, it appears that Missouri allows kids of any age to open carry (AP article dated 2/8/23) ETA from the Kansas City Beacon
  5. Same. We have two sound machines, but they're both stashed in a drawer somewhere and I don't remember what brand (or brands) they are. A few years ago DH and I decided we vastly prefer a fan. We have an inexpensive pedestal one and I'll be extremely sad when it dies. I love the white noise it makes (it's a perfect pitch or frequency or whatever for me), that it keeps the air circulating, and when I was hot flashing it was a true sleep saver. If I'm really cold I just turn it so that it doesn't blow toward the bed.
  6. Apparently it was a dispute among several people (AP) I always think of the saying that goes something like "when you have a hammer every problem looks like a nail." Except now it's "when you have guns every little thing looks like something that needs to be solved by shooting." Sigh
  7. Oh goodness did that bring back a memory! It was around the late 1980's and I was in my mid/late 20's and lost my brain for a minute and decided to join our church's women's softball team. Or maybe I was trying out for it. I was never quite clear on what the status was. But it didn't matter, 'cause I suffered through exactly one practice and was thoroughly done and over it. In fact I think I was maybe a little traumatized by the experience. Intense is totally inadequate to describe the attitude and approach to church league softball those ladies had. Way, way more competitive than I've ever wanted to be. Silly me thought it was going to be for funsies and fellowship.
  8. Platform. Two out of three of our beds are Zinus platforms and mattresses from Amazon. I wouldn't hesitate to put one in a guest room.
  9. This. I saw that it had happened, thought something along the lines of "awful, but not surprising." Like I said in the original post, I try not to get numb, but it's hard. I haven't even paid a lot of attention to the details. At this point it's all just a repeat of a bad show that we've seen so many times before that we have the basic script memorized. It was actually my lack of reaction that prompted me to post, I think. At this point I think I react to mass shootings like I do news of a bad car accident--something along the lines of "that's too bad, but it happens every day." I don't like not feeling shocked/saddened/outraged anymore, but protecting mental health is important. And w/o getting too political -- All the words have been said so many times, and too many people still continue to vote for politicians who value their gun industry donors over real people. Travis Kelce or anyone else abstaining from dinner or from going out anywhere -- what purpose would it serve? None at all. IMO it's kind of silly and sanctimonious to try to make it an issue. I can't get upset about people going on with their lives.
  10. He sounds fairly normal to me. What time did you drop him off? That pickup time would be really early for the vets I've done business with. Most want them to be dropped off between 7:30 and 8:00 and pick up is 3:30 at the very earliest, but the most common pickup time is 4:30-5:30. So I'm not surprised he was still really loopy at 1:45. Anyway, I've had dogs who slept like the dead from pickup until the following morning, and ones who were pretty much their normal, raring-to-go selves at pickup. There's a fairly big range of normal, I think.
  11. Eight to ten people injured (AP) I try not to get numb to these things, but . . I'm certainly not the least bit surprised. At this point one almost expects these things to happen.
  12. I know a couple who are flying to Texas within the next few days, staying for a week. They said their rental car costs more than their round trip airfare. So I don't think it's eclipse price gouging.
  13. The health system that our doctors belong to guarantees sick visits within 24 hours. That doesn't mean it will be with your provider or even someone else within that practice, though. It could be someone at another practice or one of their walk-in clinics. We've thankfully never had to see if or how it actually works.
  14. Said "happy anniversary" to each other and went on about our regular schedule, as far as I remember. Can you tell we're not the sentimental types? 🤣 I hope you have a happy anniversary, whatever you decide to do (or not do 😉).
  15. Of your counties the only ones I'd call central would (maybe) be Randolph. The rest are more western/northwestern or southern piedmont. At least that's how most people who live here refer to them, I think..
  16. Truth. It seems that a lot of people have somehow been convinced that being angry and riled up or afraid all the time is a good or necessary thing. Making someone angry or afraid is the oldest control game in the world. Incite those emotions and you can control people. We need to do a lot of public education on that. As far as the Kelce incident, I haven't watched it and don't know much about him or the coach. I suspect it's a big nothing burger. These are hypercompetitive men competing in the most important game of their season. For some of them it will be the most important and memorable game of their lives. It would almost be weirder if emotions hadn't flared at some point. I come from a family with more than one professional athlete. Behaviors that happen in the middle of a game or event are usually not particularly indicative of that person's behavior overall. I doubt Swift has anything to worry about, and from the little I know she strikes me as a woman who probably knows how to kick him to the curb if he gets out of line. It ain't exactly like she's dependent on him in any way.
  17. I went from New Balance and Brooks to Orthofeet. I suspect I'll stick with them from now on.
  18. We have lots of little birds that I don't know the names of (sparrows? wrens?). Cardinals are probably our most common feeder birds. It's normal for us to have six to ten at our feeders at any given time, but especially early morning and late afternoon. Lots of chickadees and finches, various types of small woodpeckers and other clinger types, doves. We have three crows who visit a couple of times a day.
  19. There's been at least one encouraging study on the possible benefit of Miyarisan for cancer patients on immunotherapy. Many of those patients on the cancer board I belong to use it. Amazon and EBay are the most popular places for buying it, I think.

I agree with these. I do wash my hands every time I use the bathroom. I will often use the bathroom, wash my hands, walk into my kitchen without touching anything else, and then wash my hands again before starting food prep. But it's not like they could have washed their hands, opened the doors from both the bathroom and the convenience store, and opened their truck door and still had really clean hands, you know? I hope anyone who is preparing food washes their hands immediately before touching utensils, pots/pans, food. Washing them five minutes before and touching multiple things in the interim isn't really helpful for food prep cleanliness.
  21. I have sauerkraut on my lunch salad every day, both for the probiotic benefit and also because it really is a yummy addition. But you do need to make sure it's a good kind like Bubbies or Wildbrine.
  22. This is how I feel in August. Like I can't take one more day of the hideously glaring, baking hot sun and disgusting high humidity. I want to find a dark, cool cave and stay in it. Reverse SAD is real, too. All that to say -- you have my sympathy.
  23. Agreed. It's one reason we love our little neighborhood so much. People aren't annoyingly nosey, but many of us do keep an eye out for each other.
