  1. I agree with you totally, and not because you agreed with me( not sure why my post didn't post with the quote)
  2. I'm sorry you feel you are owed an explanation , but none of my questions in my initial post were addressed.
  3. Plain and simple; those who feel the system failed the young man will not be happy until he is found guilty of "something"; then they will feel the system did it's job. And should he be found not guilty when the parents decide to take him to court ; again they won't be happy. Back and forth, round and round. And because of that; there is no resolution.
  4. That is not how the system works. There is only a trial if there is enough evidence to prosecute. He was in fact guilty of shooting the teen; just not for the reasons everyone is suggesting.
  5. Well, they took the time to vote at the Presidential elections and I think they were quite happy with the outcome.
  6. We have professionals, a system we are to adhere to, and laws to be followed. First of all, every loss of life is sad no matter what the color of your skin. Second, if only the young man would have obeyed the commands and had not charged the police officer he would be alive. People in this country always want to place the blame other then where it should be. The young man did not get shot because he was black; he got shot because he did not listen to the commands of the police officer and threatened to take his gun. He gave him two chances and warning shots and told him to STOP ; he still choose to not listen. People agree with the system if they get the results they wanted. Then when people don't get the results they wanted; they say there is something wrong with the system. A very positive thing could come of all this. I 100% agree that police officers should wear cameras; that would be the best thing especially in these circumstances. But I don't think that those who are fighting for it will end up agreeing it's a good thing once it's implemented. I'm not sure; but I believe that inciting violence is a crime??? The step father told everyone to burn the place down( but I'm leaving out an adjective he used that would not be allowed on this site) Why would he want people to burn down their livelihoods? We are at the Christmas season and those poor people working and looking to make money for their families now have nothing. I am sad for them. Why would all those people protesting want to take away jobs from their own community? Only 12% of the people voted in the last election ; these are clearly not people who wanted to be proactive with their voice to help make changes. What does looting shoes, liquor , and cell phones have to do with a young man losing his life? Justice means rightfulness or lawfulness. The police officer acted under the laws that are placed to give him the authority to act when his life or any persons life is in danger.
  7. I am looking for something for middle school age. I'd like a program that teaches the child how to make good quality sentences. Then take those same sentences a few pages later and beef them up with good adverbs, strong verbs, and adjectives. A few pages later has the child organize those same sentences into paragraphs where they can apply a thesis, an opening paragraph and then a conclusion paragraph. Does such a thing exist with examples? I want a workbook(ish) type book not a book that teaches the teacher how to explain. I did not buy the whole large expensive IEW program. I did however buy one of the extra books( you know , like the bible character ones and the american history ones) and I have tried to use it as a stand alone. But It's not working. The outlining part is working, but when I have my child go from scratch on something they are lost. I'm sure it is not working because I didn't buy the expensive DVD program. Can't afford it. So, I'm not sure if something like what I'm explaining exists. I would like it to take the child from the beginnings and work through to a finish product. I have experience with Meaningful composition, but it was not what I was looking for. Thank you.
  8. So i have officially started Christmas shopping. Hollister and Aeropostale are having at least 50% and 60% off. So I went ahead and bought all the clothes and saved a bundle. I think stores are having such great sales before they bring in the new stuff for Christmas. This year the children will get one big ticket item and a few small things and clothes. Has anyone else started shopping?
  9. My niece got lyme disease. At first they thought it was a spider bite so it went a while before she started showing symptoms. It took months until they figured out she had been bitten by a tick. She missed 3 months of school and a visiting nurse every day for the IV. I can't believe how sick she was. They even traveled to NY to see some specialists. I hope and pray that you get answers and the medications work. I know how sick someone can be with this.
  10. I'm sorry but I can not sift through 18 pages of posts. The 2nd amendment right( which I value) was not so much put in the Constitution to protect ourselves against others, but to protect ourselves from a government that has gone stark raving mad. It is the one that secures all other rights. With that said: Gun Control, yes, the theory that becoming a victim is somehow morally superior to defending yourself and your family. Makes perfect sense.
  11. these children should never be allowed to use the public school busing system again. They should have to scrub every toilet and floor in their entire school district. They should have to raise money for this lady to retire( I know she has already received money , but they should have to be part of it with car washes and stuff). What kind of parents raise kids like this? Where was the bus driver during all of this? Children that can do this have serious issues and they will grow up and be unleashed on society. Then place them on the side of the street with a sign that says, I am a bully and I bullied an old lady.
  12. I have a 120 DVDs; and I alphabetize them. It drives me nuts if one gets out of place. I like to vacuum the carpet in my bedrooms so that it's all going the same way. If a pencil is sharpened more than half way down; I throw it out and get a new one. Not very thrifty of me, but I hate little pencils. When I go out to eat; I take my own clorox wipes and clean the table before I can eat at it. I'm a germophobic. I'd tell you more, but I would have to change my name to Looney Tunes.
  13. because I like scooby snacks. Honestly, I just looked around the room and the first thing I saw was a scoobydo folder. There you have it; pretty exciting. Not really.
  14. I prefer supporting mom and pop businesses. It's much more personal and they go the extra mile. We order pizza from a mom and pop store and their pizza can't be beat. Plus, if we go in for dinner they know us and to me I like the personal end of that. Free enterprise is being squashed; I do all I can to preserve it.:patriot:
  15. I can't believe how many high schoolers don't even know what the Bill of Rights are. I believe that it's important that children learn what their rights are and what's in the Constitution.
  16. We as adults like to be rewarded for something extra. Our husbands get bonuses or a pay raise; why shouldn't children have the same. While I don't believe in making everything a reward because a child should be able to challenge themselves with the end result being that they walk away feeling good about themselves. But rewarding something like summer reading is pretty harmless to me. I only reward summer reading. Remember that all books are not created equal; so reward accordingly. I say no harm done. At the same time they will be learning how to manage their money.
  17. I love having the Iphone; to me the touch screen is quicker . However as one person noted that if it bumps something in your purse then it comes on , drains the battery which doesn't last as long as a regular phone. But I still love it.
  18. I saw it just to see how it was laid out. I don't plan on using it, but I am hoping that they come out with other elementary Lit guides. I have experience with the high school Lit guides and was very pleased. I think the 1st grade Lit guide looks really nice.
  19. Thank you so much for all the replies. I was looking at the Geology; I don't think it's out yet and had hoped to see samples online. I'm thinking of going with the Biology and the Astronomy; then see how we like those and decide if we are doing other sets. Thanks again for your help.
  20. Neutral is Ok. And thanks for addressing how long one book lasts. I was wondering that. So one would almost have to purchase all the books to get a full year of science?? They are a little pricey. Then there's kogs? Are those just subject extentions to work with the science? Anyone have any experience with these?
  21. We have used both; we liked the DWN books better as the pictures were easier to draw. The Draw through history books pictures were a little more challenging. It depends on how artsy your child is.
  22. has anyone used this? Is it from a religious point of view? If it isn't that's OK . I've looked at the level one and level two sets. I have an advanced reader, so I'm wondering if I should go with level 2 for my 6th grader. This is the only subject I have not decided on for the fall.
  23. I buy about 20 of them every year before school starts. I use them for school stuff of course and I use them for my menu planning, lesson planning and grocery lists. I use very little loose paper.
