  1. My 12 y.o. dd just completed Singapore 6B and I started her on Art of Problem Solving math. Whew! TOO INTENSE! She doesn't want to pursue math as a career or even in math competitions. She will likely use business math as an adult...she will have successful entrepreneurial businesses! That's just the way she's wired! But they'll be directed toward fashion or baking or salons...not math! What math should we do now? We are at pre-algebra stage, but she doesn't need over-the-top mind blowing math. Really she needs something she can do independently, preferably on the computer or at least after watching a video teaching about it. Recommendations? For high school, I expect that she will do all college prep, so I'd like her to continue preparing for Algebra, Geometry, Algebra 2, and I suppose, Trig or whatever is next. Thanks in advance!
  2. In search of ideas for starting off the school year (at home...no field trips on the first day) as a hit! Will have 6th grade girl, 3rd grade boy & 6 month old. Fun writing, crafts, worksheets, organization, scheduling, etc? All ideas welcome & appreciated! :bigear:
  3. Looking for recommendations for typing/keyboarding program for my 8 and 11 year olds. :bigear:
  4. I've never used IEW, but have heard such good things about it, I plan to this year w/ my dd, 11 & possibly my ds, soon to be 9 (depending on which one I choose). I'm trying to decide between Institute for Excellence in Writing Student Writing Intensive B (geared toward middle schoolers & includes DVDs and workbook) or IEW Fables, Myths & Fairy Tales WB writing lessons, which is just a workbook. My friend is teaching this & could give me pointers sometimes if needed, but I would not have any Instructor's Guide for it. Opinions please? Thanks! :bigear:
  5. My daughter is in 6th grade this year. I started Simply Grammar with her toward the end of last year & am not sure I like it. Lots of writing, so we do most of it orally, which puts more work on me--I have a son, 8 & a newborn. We will be using My Father's World curriculum for the first time this year & they recommend the last 3rd of Intermediate Language Lessons, which I've never used or seen. AND I've always heard good things about IEW writing and am looking into using the Student Writing Intensive B this year. From some of the things I've read, that and some WB supplements I've picked up here & there may be enough. Lots of opinions please? THANK YOU! :):bigear:
  6. How do you decide which level your child is in for Explode the Code? My son is going into 3rd grade & we have not done this curriculum before. He is a good reader, typical probably for 3rd grade level. Thanks!:001_smile:
  7. Hi! I need your input! What do you like to use for teaching Writing & for teaching Language Arts? My kids will be in 3rd and 6th grades this year. For Language, I have used Abeka Lang Arts workbooks, First Language Lessons (which I like), Simply Grammar (which I'm not sure I like), and other misc things I've picked up here and there as well as library books on grammar. A friend of mine suggested I use Explode the Code along with First Lang Lessons for my 3rd grader and Wordly Wise with Simply Grammar for my 6th grader. What has worked for you? What would you suggest? Also, I've heard great things about IEW, but I don't really have the money to buy it outright. Any input on this or other writing programs? I have not felt very successful at teaching writing & feel like my 6th grader needs more training. She seems to really like to write & I'd like to give her more direction. Thanks in advance for your input!
  8. Hi! I've used Sonlight for years, including the Kindergarten curriculum. I love it! I love the books selected. However, I do not particularly care for the language arts program. I like their theory...anyway... I used Teach Your Child to Read in 100 Easy Lessons along with Sonlight's other books. Then we took it as slow or fast as we needed. It seems like we got to some lessons & it was like pulling teeth to get through them. Then I realized that my child was just needing a break for a bit. I would continue on with the other books and activities and come back to reading in a few days or a week. I've used this method with my 2 oldest (now 8 & 11) & both are very smart & avid readers now! FYI, I am checking out Heart of Dakota this year. Still love Sonlight, but I have noticed some things about HOD that I really like. Blessings on your choices! Selena :)
