  1. I bought a vacuum sealed beef roast and put it in the refrigerator, intending to cook it this weekend. I thought the "use or freeze by" date was 4-8-17, but it was actually 3-31-17. It has been in the refrigerator since I bought it (never frozen), and the package is still vacuum sealed. Cook it or toss it?

  2. We need to cover 1800s to present (so, Year 4??). My girls infinitely prefer a textbook/workbook approach to a living books approach. I do supplement with interactive notebooks/lapbooks, so if there's a CD with printable timeline figures or maps, that would be a plus.

5th-6th grade level is about right, but need a book that does NOT have a grade level printed on the front because the girls are teenagers, reading well below grade level.

  3. I have several friends who use them, and dh got a sample from a friend who sells oils of some kind of oil that helps you breathe when you're congested. The friend told dh to put a tiny drop in his palm, rub his hands together, then hold his closed hands over his nose for a few seconds and breathe deeply. No idea what kind of oil it is, but it smells kind of menthol-ish and tea tree oil-ish. We'd like to buy a larger bottle of something like that. We're also interested in oils that can be used to make natural cleansers to use around the house (laundry, bathroom, kitchen).

ETA: The sample bottle I mentioned above has a sticker on it that says "Breathe."

What oils do you like best for a "starter package?" And where do you suggest buying them? I am ABSOLUTELY NOT INTERESTED in multi-level marketing and slick advertising. We have a pushy acquaintance who sells a particular brand, so I'm hoping it's not one of the ones you folks recommend highly! LOL ;)

  4. I've decided that I want to do some mini-units as we do SOTW (Volume 3 in the upcoming school year) so we can include some topics that SOTW 3 doesn't cover. So far, I've come up with the Salem Witch Trials and Pirates (especially female pirates). Can someone help me add a few more topics not included in SOTW 3 that would be of interest to teenage girls?   The time period would be roughly 1600-1850.

  5. Do you know anything about any of these? Would you recommend any of them?

Time of the Witches by Anna Myers (reading level 5.3, 208 pages)

The Sacrifice by Kathleen Benner Duble (reading level 5.1, 211 pages)

I Walk in Dread: The Diary of Deliverance Trembley, Witness to the Salem Witch Trials (Dear America) by Lisa Rowe Fraustino (reading level 6.4, 243 pages)

Salem Witch by Hermes (reading level 5?, 192 pages)

Beyond The Burning Time by Kathryn Lasky (reading level 5.3, 272 pages)

  6. Not about the Salem trials, but along the same vein, The Witch of Blackbird Pond.

I second the Witch of Blackbird Pond, I just read it recently and enjoyed it. I plan to pass it along to have my kids read it at some point in the future.

We also loved Witch of Blackbird pond!! Dd and I listened to it on Audible a year or so ago. It's a great reading on there too. Dd has since reread the book many times. :)

I had this one on the list, but it's a little above the girls' reading level. It's 6.9, so about a grade level above where they are.

  7. Just FYI my kids hate the printed now they discovered the online version :) I fought them about it for about six months.

Yeah, I love the online version myself, and they all say they use a dictionary app for their homework. But I do not allow them to bring their phones or tablets to school, so we have to look up words the old-fashioned way while they're here. I'm just mean that way. LOL! ;p

  8. I'm compiling a list of all the different history-related fictional diary-type books/series I can find for my girls (4th-6th grade reading level). What do you know of that's out there besides these series?

    Dear America

    Royal Diaries

    American Diaries

    Liberty Letters

    Journey to America

My Side of the Story (not a "diary," but first person perspective)

    Do you know of others?

  9. Have you looked at the Sonlight kit? http://www.sonlight.com/350-15.html. It lists everything included in the kit.

I looked, but this is for the Apologia high school Chemistry course. I didn't see a kit for the Young Explorers Chemistry & Physics course at the Sonlight website. Maybe I looked in the wrong place?

  10. I've searched online, and the only thing I can find about what is included in the Creation Sensation kit is a paragraph that says "You will get ___ and much much more. You will receive the necessary chemicals like ___ and others. Of course you will also get items like ___ plus many many items we do not have time or space to mention." I emailed the company, but I haven't received a response. I want a really complete kit, not just the most essential items (so I've ruled out the kit from Home Science Tools).

FWIW, I'm also considering this one:

    Nature's Workshop (at CBD) http://www.christianbook.com/apologia-chemistry-physics-lab-kit/pd/641200?item_code=WW&event=CART

Have you used kits from either or both companies? Your observations? Recommendations?

  12. Which of the kits below is the most complete? I'm looking for a kit that has pretty much everything except the perishables.

I went to each vendor's website and printed off the available contents lists, but one was arranged alphabetically, one was arranged by lesson, and one was vague: "You will get ___ and much much more. You will receive the necessary chemicals like ___ and others. Of course you will also get items like ___ plus many many items we do not have time or space to mention."

So I'm needing some help here! Thanks!

  14. I don't but..

The activities in the book will allow for "dramatic" activities with just vinegar & baking soda and also (kids' favorite) diet coke and Mentos. It's been a few years so I don't remember everything that you do. But if you buy everything on the supply list for all the activities, your kids will get plenty of hands on fun. I would probably put my money into buying enhancements for some of the specific activities. For example, there's one where you make a hurricane in a bottle. Ours did not turn out very well. But you can by a special... thingy... to screw on in place of the regular cap, and that's supposed to make it work better.

It did make my son want a chemistry set... unfortunately, by the time he got one last Christmas from my parents, he had developed a phobia and has yet to play with it. Therefore I can't say how good that particular set was :( It was a Thames and Kosmos set, but I don't remember which one. C1000? It's probably a great set; my dad is good at picking that sort of thing out. Not a terribly helpful response, but since no one else has...

Thank you for your comments! I'm actually thinking about looking at my Apologia high school level Physics and Chemistry books to see if any of those experiments will substitute for some of the ones in the Young Explorers book.
