  1. Thanks for the information on Landry Academy. That looks like something he would really like. I will have to go re-read Lewelma's posts. I have read them before, but don't remember now. A Science Project could be fun, if he found a topic he was interested in. He does not like biology or physical science, so his Freshman year may be challenging. He loves chemistry and physics, though.
  2. Thanks, I am not familiar with Landry, but will look into it. We are in the U.S.
  3. I hope you don't mind me jumping in, but what magazines do you recommend? I also have a VSL dyslexic son. He loves anything technological.
  4. I am trying to figure out our high school plan for oldest DS. I am stumped on science because his unique learning style- insanely visual spatial (tested off the charts). He loves science, but I have never been able to use a curriculum with him. He is too 'whole to parts'. Learning about small concepts that build upon the whole picture drives him crazy and cause him to shut down. He is very bright- very high IQ and tested at the grad school level for all subjects except language arts (he has dyslexia and dysgraphia). What has worked best in the past, is for him to watch science videos or read short articles, or talk to a chemistry teacher friend of ours. I know we need to bump it up for high school, but I have no idea where to look. Our last attempt was Exploration Education, which he did for a couple weeks before he started detesting it. I would appreciate any suggestions or feedback. ETA: He wants to go into a STEM field. Some careers he is considering: computers, engineering or architect.
  5. I really appreciate the advice! He is not yet done testing yet, but the tester said that DS is definitely 2E, as he is testing out in everything except language arts at a 12 to 13 grade level. You could have knocked me over with a feather when she told me that. I had no idea! He has always resisted and complained about everything, except math. I thought he was behind on everything. I love the ASL idea- does that meet the foreign language requirement for college admittence?
  6. Loving this advice- thanks so much! He is a decent reader, just avoids it at all cost because he is a perfectionist, and often times refuses to try if he thinks he may not succeed. He tested at about a 6th grade level of reading, which I think is pretty good considering he is reading-phobic. The hardest part for me is figuring out how much to push, and when to say, "okay, you can't do it, so let's find an adaptation". I want him to love learning and feel like he can be whatever he wants to be.
  7. Thanks Lori! Yes, I agree that after he has finished all his testing I will have a better idea about how to help him. I'm sure when those results come, I will be a nuisance on the special ed. forum. : ) He went through WWE and did really well, minus the writing. We are doing WWS now, and he hates it but he 'gets it'. I have to read the directions because reading comp is bad. Handwriting and Spelling are very challenging for him, and he has a strong aversion to anything that looks like a book. He loves audio books and read-alouds though. The tester said he has a solid understanding of basic phonics, but needs work on advanced phonics. We have tried just about everything- AAS, LOE, Apples & Pears... I do still have LOE, so we could go back through that again. Also, she did not test audio working memory (?) yet, but suspects it is really bad.
  8. If you don't mind me asking, which EIW book are you using, how old is your son and how does one get Landmark supplements?
  9. I have known for many years that 14 y.o. son is dyslexic. We just started some testing which confirmed that he is dyslexic and gifted. We follow classic methods with some adjustments as needed for him. I am very anxious on how I am going to help him with the increasing demands and more difficult work load as he starts high school next year. (Still homeschooling) I would love advice on anyone who has 'been there, done that'- best advice and what do you wish you would have done differently? DS is interested in math and computers and tested at college level for math.
  10. Just a little bump... No one has ordered lately? I have e-mailed twice and called and left a message. No response at all. Any ideas about how to contact them?
  11. All I received was an order confirmation with the order number, price, my address, etc. There is no link or attachment. I ordered from their site, not currclick. I checked all e-mail folders. I guess I will call tomorrow and try to talk to a human. Thanks
  12. I ordered a download over a week ago and have not received anything yet. I e-mailed their customer service last week and haven't heard anything. Are they normally slow in responding? I am really disappointed because DS was excited to use that along with his History, and now he is two weeks in and nothing yet.
  13. My 6 year old is very interested in maps and learning about the countries. Does anyone have an app they recommend which would give basic info on the different countries? Something with a 'world cultures' aspect would be a plus.
  14. Is there a way I can change my setting so I can't see any of a specific 'friend's' posts? And, without them knowing?
  15. We are reading 'The Book Thief' as a read-aloud, and the boys each have their own sci-fi books going. I forget which ones, I can't keep up with them! My daughter reads her LOE animal readers every day- love those!
  16. Do you do flashcards? I made some for each chapter and we went through them everyday. If my kids couldn't memorize the Vocab words, we took a week off from the lessons to really cement them. It took my kids 2 years to get through LL1, and we just started LL2.
  17. I came across a homeschool blog last year and can't find it back. The woman home schools little boys and had a neat meditation table set up with books and hands-on objects. She talked about how she meditates with her kids every morning. It may have been a Waldorf blog, not sure. Does this sound familiar to anyone?
  18. My friend wants to get an iPad for her son for Christmas and is wondering if there are any good Apps that would be helpful to him. Anyone have experience with apps for Autism?
  19. Oldest DS loves board games and is asking for a new one for Christmas. I am looking for a game between Catan and D&D- using strategy with a mythical element. We would rather not do D&D. Any recommends? ETA: He likes books such as Harry Potter, Lord of the Rings, Percy Jackson and is 13. Thanks!
