  1. I really like Punic Wars & Culture Wars. I'm reading it very slowly -- maybe one essay a week. It's really adding to my wishlist, too, as he recommends all kinds of interesting books I've never heard of.
  2. ~ The Seven Laws of Teaching - John Milton Gregory ~ Climbing Parnassus - Tracy Lee Simmons ~ The Art of Teaching - Gilbert Highet ~ Marva Collins' Way ~ Who Killed Homer? And of course, the book that started it all for me: The Well-Trained Mind ~Anne
  3. You just never know. It's a space-available thing, I think. Sometimes media mail takes over 6 weeks, too, and then sometimes it's only a few days. It's very unpredictable.
  4. I've found that parcel post takes at least 6 weeks. Around Christmas time it takes much longer.
  5. Last night was 8, but tonight, according to my DVR guide, it's from 7 to 9.
  6. I did it using the Core plan. I'm Lifetime now, and I continue to weigh in once a month. That has been crucial for me! I blogged about my WW journey a few months ago here. I highly recommend WW! It's a healthful way to lose weight and keep it off. Best wishes! ~Anne
  7. Whenever I've been there, I really can't tell that they help, and they make A LOT of noise.
  8. Yes, everything is expensive here. We're military, so I do most of my grocery shopping on base, and whenever I go to a local supermarket, I can't believe the prices. It's not unusual to see milk at $7/gallon. Gas is more expensive here, too, although it's about $2.00 a gallon cheaper right now than it was this summer. Yesterday I paid $2.48/gallon. Housing is outrageously expensive, and you have to really lower your standards. Don't expect air-conditioning, a dishwasher, or even a bath tub! Many houses only have a shower or a Japanese-style tub. Most houses are small and are single-wall construction. And houses are very close together, so it matters who you're neighbors are. I can hear my next door neighbors sneeze! The actual move here was a major pain, even with the military handling it. Dealing with the local bureaucracy, learning your way around, and finding housing here is beyond annoying. Someone wisely told me to give it about 3 months to adjust, and she was right. Still, I love it. We're on our third consecutive tour here and have been here 6 1/2 years. We bought a house last year. I love the weather and the scenery. We have a great church and dear friends. I love the community I live in, and it's been a really good place for my kids to grow up. The only time I've felt island fever was when we had the earthquake a couple of years ago and lost power, phone, and internet. My husband is due to retire in less than 2 years, and we haven't decided if we'll stay here after that -- mainly because of the expense. If you're looking for adventure, I'd say go for it. :-)
  9. Art of Argument covers informal logic -- fallacies. Traditional Logic is concerned with the forms of logical arguments -- syllogisms. We've used (or are using) both in our studies. In my opinion, TL is more difficult than Art of Argument, Thinking Toolbox, or Fallacy Detective. Right now my 9th grader is doing Art of Argument, and election season is a really good time to find fallacies! :D She completed TL 1 & 2 in 7th and 8th grades and will do Material Logic after Christmas.
  10. It was my son's first year, and he was in 10th grade. He had completed TL I & II, and Material Logic by then. Our club was an NCFCA one, and the time commitment was significant. It ended up being a lot more than what they told us at the beginning of the year. He struggled in the beginning but really showed improvement throughout the year. I'm really glad for the experience for him, but, again, it was a BIG commitment. I think 9th grade would be a good time to start. A lot of the kids in our club who started in 7th grade (through a different club) were really burned out by their senior year.
  11. I think he was in Georgia before he moved to Montgomery. He runs a counseling ministry at Eastwood PCA.
  12. We used to go to church with the author. The book has some good practical applications, and the heart journaling is helpful. He recommends parents read the book first and apply the principles to themselves. There's a workbook available, too, but I haven't seen it. ~Anne
  13. The link is here. We have a friend here who is from Italy, and she came over once a week or so to help him and have conversation in Italian. I think we're going to use Rosetta Stone this year and keep up his tutoring from our friend. ~Anne
  14. It comes with 3 workouts and the first one is really good at easing into exercise. You work out 6 days a week for 6 weeks. The website is here. The moves are not complicated. The only equipment you need is resistance bands, and they came with my DVDs. I've really increased my strength and endurance and toned up a lot in 6 weeks. I noticed real results in how my clothes fit within about 2-3 weeks.
  15. I also dislike "whatevers". I'm hearing that one more and more around here. And it's not a word! Also, "disorientated". Again, NOT a word!!! And here's a local favorite that's on bumper stickers and car windows everywhere -- "Ainokea" It's pronounced eye-no-kay-uh , meaning I no care. I saw a car recently with a Ai Kea sticker, and I wanted to follow the driver and hug her. But I reconsidered. :D
  16. He was so condescending and arrogant. He said if parents are smart enough to teach their children, they're smart enough to work and put them into private school. Huh? In my state, private school teachers don't have to be certified! And his insisting that children have a right to choose. Please!
  17. In one scene, a man was stripped and tarred & feathered. There was full nudity but not for long. And when the Adams' daughter has breast cancer, they show her breast and surgery. That's all I remember off the top of my head.
  18. In Omnibus III this year, we'll study American history, so I'll have them watch it to supplement. I really enjoyed it! And the book is one of my all-time favorites. ~Anne
  19. We rented our home in Pensacola when we lived in Japan and part of our tour here. Our property manager took care of showing the house, doing the lease, and making arrangements for repairs, etc. He was NOT good at communicating with us, and would take us by surprise with money out of our account for repairs, etc. When we got fed up with this, we sold the house. If you can find someone who knows and can recommend a property manager, you should be fine. Just keep some money saved up for those unexpected things!
  20. I've lost 25 pounds and have kept it off for 2 years now with Core.
