  1. I'm :bigear: Believe it or not, my ds suggested uniforms earlier this year. We're considering it!
  2. Wow! I'm so glad I took the plunge and read Moby Dick. It has got to be one of the very best books I have ever read. Fantastic. Just... fantastic. That is all! MM
  3. I've never heard of these before! Off to look...:auto:
  4. Ds loved The Boxcar Children and Thornton Burgess books.:)
  5. Sorry! I was originally wondering how many lessons are in Climbing to Good English and whether I could use Climbing to Good English *after* we finish with R&S for the year, since we school year 'round. But it looks like CTGE is enough for an entire year by itself. Sigh! I've already purchased R&S for next year, and somewhat hate to abandon what's already working... So, can I justify using CTGE for just, say, 9-10 weeks? :bigear::lol::bigear:
  6. Does Antiques Roadshow count? :D Otherwise, I don't think I've seen any bona fide reality shows. :leaving:
  7. :iagree: Midwest here. Pronouncing t as /d/ is a BIG pet peeve of mine. I could hardly STAND to hear one of my college acquaintances (from Colorado FWIW) say "bedder" for better. :banghead: She also said, "birdday" for birthday. :scared:
  8. :iagree: My pet peeve is used curriculum sold for almost the same price as new. :001_rolleyes: With free shipping and competitive prices for new products, why would anyone want to pay so much for used?
  9. McElligott's Young Analyzer for Word Analysis/Spelling. Brilliant.
  10. I like the look of R&S Bible 5-8, too. At least I don't have to worry about that until NEXT year. :D Unless, of course, we do R&S Reading 4. It would go well with our study of the ancients next year; it even has a markable map of Paul's journeys. Oh dear!
  11. Oh! I'm not sure how I missed your post. I'm so sorry to read that you found the CLE Reading to be busywork. I had read that people *particularly* liked CLE Reading 4, that it taught poetry appreciation, etc. Ack. :willy_nilly:
  12. Dc like watching this occasionally during lunch :) We like it, and I'm glad I bought it. That said, it is NOT what you need to get down your addition and subtraction facts. It's just not there. Think of it more as a tips and tricks, fun, goofy math video. I've seen nothing better than Rod and Staff Arithmetic 2 for getting those facts down cold. The triplets concept they use (similar to number bonds in SM) is fantastic. ETA: I see you are using CLE Math. We did, too, for 2nd. Ds always scored 100%, but at the end of the year, his facts were not as quick and automatic as they ought (IMO) to be. We ordered the blackline masters for Rod and Staff Arithmetic 2, spent a couple of weeks drilling with the adorable blossom and bee posters and blackline masters of the bees and blossoms (did I say adorable???) and my ds had them down in no time. I still have him recite the triplets every once and a while-- He can do them faster than I can! With ds#2, my plan is to use R&S Arithmetic 2 regardless of what we use for any other level. !!! :) Sigh. Hindsight is always 20/20.
  13. K-3: CHOW, OIS, and many history books (mostly interest led) from the 1000 Good Books List, including the d'Aulaire and Diane Stanley books, etc. 4: Ancients 5: Middle Ages 6: 1500-1800 7: 1800-1900 8: 1900-present day :)
  14. Little Days, in my post above, is still the closest I've seen.
  15. Ah! Thanks on both points! It's good to know the kids like FMOR; and thanks for pointing out the fact that the FM series is... all men! We do lots of outside reading, so we can read about heroines and other famous women, too. :)
  16. I really like the skills covered in CLE Reading as well. Does anyone know how the MP guides compare with CLE Reading in this respect? Do they teach about poetry, literary analysis terms, etc.? It seems, by just looking at the examples, that the vocabulary study is more interesting and varied in CLE.
  17. I'm wondering this, too! :lurk5: Can you help me by explaining this? How do they glorify war? Do you mean the study in 6th grade on Horatius at the Bridge and The Trojan War? I'm not sure I'm too worried about Horatius or The Trojan War... In fact, it might be an interesting contrast to the pacifist teachings we read in our R&S and CLE books ;) Then again, I have 2 boys. :D
  18. Out of curiosity, which levels are you tweaking... that is, trying next year? :)
  19. These are all the things that make me want to continue with CLE Reading, too. 1. It gets done. 2. It's pretty complete. 3. We read a lot of literature "for fun", i.e. without analysis. 4. I like the skills and critical thinking in CLE Reading. I'm NOT sure whether this is in MP's Lit. Guides or not. Anyone know? 5. Ds, so far, LOVES CLE Reading. Of course, he might love MP lit. guides, too. However--> Dh asked me to *consider* a packaged program for next year, as I tend to make all our study guides, worksheets, etc. myself. Of all the packaged curr. out there, MP looks like the *closest* to what we'd do ourselves. If we go with a packaged program, I'd really like to TRY to do it as is, without tweaking. (If I start tweaking, I think there would be no stop!) *If* with did MP next year, we'd add "free reading" from my booklists in literature, science, and history. FWIW, I'm debating between MP 4th and William Lyon's plan for next year. Just rambling with my thoughts here...
