  1. I've skimmed Ambleside Online. I was impressed but intimidated and thought it unlikely I'd ever be able to follow along with it. I'm going back to re-read through everything now and I'll probably try to add that in for our new year. Thank you!
  2. You know, I was just looking at that today and realized I should have bought that instead of the WWE workbook. I'm still reading through the PHP sample, but it seems to be what I've been looking for. I will check this out, it sounds neat. Thank you!
  3. I can order from Amazon (Canada) and have it 2 days later, without Prime. I love that my stuff gets here so fast, but Amazon only has so many things. Maybe I'm just used to waiting for packages from the US, but when I placed my order with RR it got here surprisingly fast, and shipping was reasonable considering the weight. Nobody seems to have free shipping over $__ to Canada, though, so there's been no real reason for me to look elsewhere. (Please correct me if I'm wrong :) )
  4. I've been somewhat planning a trip we're taking across the province ... in 2018. (Yeah, I'm kind of excited.) Anyway, we'll get to see tons of things we won't get to see otherwise. I was going to give each of my kids a Smash Book and a camera so they could remember it however they wanted. Mind you, Smash books are supposed to be somewhat messy because they're easy, spur-of-the-moment type scrapbooks. I have one and enjoy it and figured it was an easy introduction for the kids.
  5. I'd love more suggestions! I know some people do this :)
  6. Thank you! I'll look into those options you suggested too :)
  7. No, a while ago Staples.ca had Better Binders as part of their $1, $2, $5, $10 sale. I went in-store to look at them before ordering one.
  8. I just switched over some of ours too. We don't have the trade-in deal here, as far as I know, but I went to check them out for an online sale and found some 1.5" for $2.99 each. I grabbed a bunch and LOVE them.
  9. Thank you, that does help sort things out a bit. I can see how this would be a good option for us. I have no idea which books I'd consider. There are a few lists around that list the classics by age, etc. I'd probably pull from one of those should I find it again.
  10. I saw this mentioned recently and it sounds like something I've been hoping for. Can someone tell me more about this? How would I know which books to use, or how to use them for spelling, grammar, etc. (I'm too used to scripted guides, and trying to get away from those.) I can see pulling words for vocab, but the rest I'm sort of fuzzy on. Are there any threads that have discussed this? I wasn't sure what exactly to search. My oldest is finishing up first grade, we don't read many classics (though I'd love to) and we haven't found curriculum in most areas of language arts that we like. I'd like to change this. We need to work on reading comprehension, too. I would love to have a mostly-DIY/pieced-together language arts of classic and living books.
  11. Does anyone else have any suggestions?
  12. Hm, well that's pretty much what I was expecting and I'm kind of disappointed. We've tried Wordly Wise and it didn't suit us. I'll check out the Sadlier-Oxford.
  13. I've been looking at Caesar's English, and it looks interesting. My oldest is going into grade 2, and I was thinking I'd start him out with MCT's Building Language before moving on to Caesar's English. If I was planning to go with Getting Started With Latin in grade 5, will this be like a head start or sort of redundant? Are roots covered in most Latin programs, or is it usually just conjugating/grammar?
  14. Wow, I wish they had a map of Canada, and it's too bad the world map is out of stock online. Seems handy.
  15. If I remember, it's pretty scripted. They tell you what to say, how to prompt, which extra activities to include and when. I'd say you probably just break it up. I don't recall having to plan anything out except when to do our lessons.
  16. If you write them all out in OneNote, you can link to them in another tab/note. For example, I've written out library books I'll need for each unit and then copied the link of that paragraph into my weekly schedule. You just click it from there and it brings you to the main paragraph.
  17. I can't find anything on the Staples Canada website about trading in binders, that's too bad. Right now they've got the 1" for $5 and the 3" for $10. I'm thinking 3" is going to be too big and bother me, but the 2" isn't on sale. Also, apparently the Better Dividers are not for Canadians, which is also too bad, since those repositionable tabs at the top of the divider sure are tempting. Unless the store has them but the site doesn't. ETA: I went in-store today and found some 1.5" Better Binders in the clearance section for $2.97. They must be an older style? They don't have the pocket on the outside and are "metallic" colours. Woohoo, though!
  18. I have OneNote 2007, and seeing it mentioned that it isn't as good has made me check out the 2013 version. I can't use it, since I don't plan to upgrade my Windows, but it looks great. 2007 works just fine though, and yeah, maybe it's more of a pain to get my notebook on both my desktop and netbook, maybe it doesn't have the touchscreen capability, but it serves its' purpose and I can live with those limitations, and I would still recommend it over EverNote (tried it, didn't particularly like it). It never occurred to me that there was an upgrade by now. My 2 computers aren't linked at all, so I often e-mail myself links and notes that I want to add to my OneNote. Since this thread, I've been revamping my notebook, but I have 1 tab per subject and 1 for WTM (what it suggests for reading, etc.) so I don't have to dig out my book every time. I'm not sure what I'll do for subjects that the boys do separately. I also have a tab for notebooking-type pages that I make up for the kids to use. I'm not sure what the 2010 is like, but I like the excel tables in 2013.
  19. I've managed to find a few more threads since posting this, go figure. I'm glad to hear that My First History of Canada works well. I'm getting excited to start it. I'll have to keep up with the searches for corresponding read alouds and such. Thanks! I did see this and bookmarked it as well. I haven't had time to really go through it completely, but it looks great!
  20. I was just reading through for future years of the history cycle and noticed that in WTM they suggest a list of topics to cover in year 4, but then say that most states cover US history this year, so all suggested resources are for US history. Does anyone switch this out for Canadian history? I've searched to little avail, to my surprise. I'd like to cover the suggested topics but, for our first run through, or even as an aside, I'd like to cover Canadian history. I have My First History of Canada by Donalda Dickie which looks very promising, but aside from that I'm not sure. I have a feeling I'll have to do schedule that in after we're done the years history or something because I'm not sure how to mesh them otherwise. Canadians, any suggestions? How have you done this?
  21. Ours is in the basement. Great for keeping cool on those super hot days of summer. This blog post is from late last year, and it's changed some since then, but since it's always messy I don't bother with new pictures. :)
  22. I looked into the ScienceWorks and the Elemental Science and I'm not sure they would work for us. I'm not really sure what I'm looking for. I think I lean more toward pulling from different resources and compiling it into our own plan. I may just take topics to use as a guideline for library books and add in activities. I guess I'm hoping for something heavy on literature? Which may just be easier to do myself since our library doesn't always have what's suggested.
