  1. I was always intrigued by this http://www.picocricket.com/ I just wish it wasn't so expensive. I definitely would have bought it by now.
  2. The day my son was born we had a friend (a childless friend lol) come by to see him. He asked me "When does he open his eyes?". Confused, I said "When he wakes up?". Then I realized what he was asking. I asked him if he thought he was a kitten
  3. When I eat too much citrus I'm more likely to get a cold sore (and of course, anytime my immune system is down like after a cold). The only thing that consistently works for me when I feel that little tingle on my lip is a tea bag. If I catch it at the tingle stage, it does the trick, but I don't know about once the cold sore actually shows up (been a while since I had to worry about that). I just let it sit in hot water for a minute (just until saturated) then hold it on my lip throughout the day (5-10 minutes on, every 30 minutes to an hour, changing the tea bag a few times).
  4. My 5 year old is like that. I don't see him growing out of it either. Does he like quinoa? You can use that in place of rice, add it to soups, make a hot cereal out of it, etc. It's a pretty good source of protein. Check out http://www.nutritiondata.com - they have a nutrient search tool that might be helpful.
  5. This happened to one of my beautifully seasoned lodge pans too! I had to dedicate one cast iron pan to hamburgers. We've since got the lodge pro griddle (double sided griddle/grill). The grill side is only used for burgers and the griddle side is used ONLY for pancakes, french toast, tortillas, etc (and the seasoning is awesome on that side!). After burgers, I have to let it soak for a few hours in the sink and then the burnt bits come off with a light scrubbing (cloth rag). The pan that used to be used for burgers - it looks great now! So there is hope! Just find one pan for burgers, and to clean, just let it soak in the sink to cut down on the amount of scrubbing ;) We also have a small cast iron skillet dedicated to eggs. It's still not seasoned all that great (its not black black), but the eggs don't stick. We just use a fair amount of coconut oil when cooking (my kids need the fat anyway lol). I can't remember the last time anything but eggs was cooked in that pan. Once my SIL came over and cooked scrambled eggs in one of my lodge skillets....I was almost in tears watching. Instead of just letting the eggs cook & set on their own, she stirred and stirred and stirred. It took a long time to reseason that pan. You might want to designate a mom pan, and a dh pan ). I :001_wub: cast iron, it is definitely worth the "trouble". All of the cast iron I have is lodge, and I've got about 30 more pieces of lodge in my Amazon shopping cart (most of which I'll probably never be able to afford! lol).
  6. I usually use the quick soak method and then cook them in the pressure cooker. For quick soak, cover beans with about twice as much water and bring to a boil for 2 minutes, remove from the heat and let it soak for 1-2 hours. After it's done soaking, pour the soak water out, rinse the beans in a colander (rinse the pot out too), put the beans in the pot with just enough water to cover the beans and other ingredients (usually just a diced onion). Add a bit of fat (some recipes say lard, I've used coconut oil and canola before) and pressure cook for 5 or 6 minutes. The first night I make these I serve them with "spanish rice" (made in the rice cooker) and blue cornbread. Then throughout the week we use them up (sometimes make up some taco meat, homemade tortillas, etc). I just made black beans this way the other day (except instead of diced onion, I just used some garlic & onion powder). I added 3 tablespoons of salt to the soak water to see if it would help them keep their shape (black beans get so mushy) and it seemed to help. We used them the same way pretty much - first night taco salad on corn chips, the rest of the week leftovers and burritos with homemade tortillas.
  7. Oh, that looks neat! As nice as that sounds, having one that automatically rinses, I think I want to go with something that is manual and doesn't have any "parts" to worry about. I found this today. I think this will work and the price isn't bad at all :) Thanks for the suggestions everyone!
  8. If you can get the 5 gallon buckets from the bakeries, gamma seal lids should fit those just fine. They have a ring that snaps down over the top of a standard bucket, and a lid that screws into the ring. We use a mix of buckets like these and 6 gallon buckets with gamma seal lids.
  9. We have had ours (couch, loveseat, chair, ottoman) for maybe 5 years or so. They are holding up great! We use the carpet shampooer on it every now and then and it's still looking pretty good :) And we are ROUGH on furniture lol
  10. I got the Easy Sprout cup a while back. It broke after using it just a couple of times :glare: But, what we got out of it we really liked! So I'd like to get something a bit nicer, not necessarily something that sprouts a lot though (we're still easing into using sprouts lol). So, if anyone has any favorites, I'd love to hear about them :D
  11. I became allergic to eggs  I miss eggs (that was almost 5 yrs and one pregnancy ago).
  12. The probiotic should still help if taken at least 2 hours after every antibiotic dose. Or, I guess halfway between each dose would work too. He may not get the full benefit, but it should still help :) Hope he's feeling better soon!
  13. I don't worry about brand so much, but I do make sure I get probiotics from the refrigerated sections. I've been giving my 1 yr old and 4 yr old powdered probiotics w/apple juice in a shot glass. With just a little juice, I can be sure they get it all. I'll update with what brand I have in a bit (I can't remember lol). Nature's Way - http://www.iherb.com/ProductDetails.aspx?pid=8198192788212070220&at=0 (didn't buy it here though, I got it at our local health food store)
  14. I'd do it! That tea had better be worth it though :tongue_smilie:
  15. I agree :ack2: I was mostly excited because I'm used to finding red #40 in just about everything, it was nice to check something red for a change and not see #40 lol
  16. Artificial dye makes my 4 yr old ds violent and out of control. For a while he was having awful nightmares. I think it was a reaction to the steady dose of vanillin he was getting from Ovaltine (once we cut that out, the nightmares stopped although vanillin still slips in the diet every now and then). I think there may still be some food/additive sensitivies to figure out, but cutting those out have made a world of difference (and 2 yrs later we finally have the grandparents trained lol). Kind of a funny story.... I was over at my moms and reading labels and I got all excited reading the label on a container of bright red jello with the fruit bits in it. She wasn't as excited to learn the dye in it was cochineal :D That used to be her favorite snack and now she won't eat it. She told me to quit reading the labels on her food lol
  17. I want to second the whole chicken suggestion made before. We can get 3 meals out of one $4 chicken (of course, adding stuff on the side). First night I roast a chicken w/onion and herbs (sometimes with potatoes and carrots if I have them on hand) and usually have steamed veggies on the side. That's about half the chicken. After dinner I pick the meat off and boil the carcass for stock. That (and the meat) usually makes enough for 2 more meals - chicken & dumplings, chicken & (homemade) biscuit casserole, chicken noodle soup, etc. All you need for these meals really is a bag or two of frozen mixed veggies, celery/onion, noodles and stuff like flour, baking powder, etc for the biscuits. These are meals that can easily be stretched too so that there is enough for lunch the next day. And of course, dry beans, brown rice, lentils, etc as suggested are very healthy inexpensive foods. Quinoa would be great, but that is usually a little on the pricey side. One thing you might want to price (not sure, I never have) is if a bulk size container of dried onion (with the spices) is cheaper than buying fresh onion.
  18. I just wanted to update and thank everyone for the suggestions! I think I'd really love to go with The Phonics Road to Spelling and Reading but I just don't have the funds. I was able to pick up a copy of AlphaPhonics and Phonics Pathways really inexpensively, so I'm going to give these (or one of these) a shot. I haven't given up on the idea of Webster's though. I printed out a copy and still reading up on it :D
  19. I was thinking it was just the fact that future Charlotte is in the vicinity of past Charlotte. I don't think that has happened yet on the show, has it? (someone being near their past self)
  20. That link was an interesting read! We thought that Mrs. Hawking might be Faraday's mom, but I didn't connect that with Ellie. About Charlottes nosebleeds, we were thinking that maybe she's getting them because she is on the island with herself as a child (and she said she hadn't gotten nosebleeds since she was a child).
  21. R&S has a workbook (about 80 pgs) titled "The Eight Parts of Speech". It could be done along side whatever you choose to go with :)
  22. I agree...if they still smell, I'd probably not use them. You could always toss them and do a quick soak (boil 2 minutes, soak 1-2 hrs, and rinse).
  23. We are using 3b (US) and I know that there has to be some good information somewhere in that HIG, but just looking at the book gives me a headache. To me, it seems incredibly disorganized (like me, we're not a good match lol). Luckily, 3b is review for my daughter and I haven't needed it (we're just easing into the Singapore methods). I have 1a Standards (for ds) and the HIG looks so much better (although, I haven't put it to use yet).
  24. I pulled my dd out of ps in 4th last year and tried out Shurley 4 and R&S 5 (because it was almost time for 5th grade by that time). We didn't really start R&S 5 until 5th and it was a BATTLE. She didn't have her parts of speech down. So we switched to R&S 4 for 5th grade WITH "The Eight Parts of Speech" workbook R&S puts out and she's doing great. Definitely look into "The Eight Parts of Speech" workbook along with R&S 4 (not sure what level you are doing). If you don't mind having them on different levels, R&S 3 for the 4th grader, and R&S 4 w/parts of speech workbook for the 6th grader would probably be a good fit :) R&S 3 for the 6th grader would probably be fine too (that would put him in R&S8 in 11th if you kept with it).
  25. You could make up a quiche recipe and freeze it before baking. When you're ready to bake it, just thaw, pour it in the pan and bake. We used to do this when we were using 30 Day Gourmet a lot.
