  1. Has anyone used the Economics for Everyone DVD and study guide for a high school credit? Opinions? TIA!
  2. No, I haven't done the Ronit Bird's e-books. I'll look into them and all the other things suggested!
  3. We tried Math U See, but it takes her forever to get something. So, I stopped doing that because we literally could not move on. I just do things with her like using money to identify coins and count them, Addition the fun way that has stories with the facts, using a real clock for time, workbooks, and worksheets, manipulatives, etc.
  4. Any suggestions on a math board game? I am thinking about Math Animals math board game or Sum Swamp addition and subtraction. My 10 year old does have dyslexia, borderline IQ, and auditory processing. She is around a first grade level in math. TIA
  5. She is 10. No understanding of time, but she can read a clock. She can measure. She would have to count all five. We haven't worked to much with dice... I know what you are saying about Dyscalculia. I never have heard of it myself until I ran across it. It kinda sounds like my child, but I know dyslexics can have trouble in math too. Along with the IQ, it makes it harder to determine exactly why the problem in math. If I know exactly why, I can try to work with that....
  6. How do I know if my child has dyscalculia? I guess I could have her tested...She has been dx with dyslexia but has a hard time in math. Hard time remembering facts, dealing with money, etc. She does have a borderline IQ too.
  7. I have known this a couple of years. So far..she is making a year progress in 2 years. I was told this is normal. Yes! Auditory is a big factor. After testing they didn't even tell me she could have difficulties there! Why? I have no idea! That is why I am a little concerned about the test itself. I figured that out and had her tested for APD on my own and hers was at about a 4 year olds level. We have been working on things since then. I was trying to get experiences because I believe that we can not limit our children or ourselves. Saying they will only get to a cognitive level of a 12 year old just doesn't sound right. How does anyone "know" what a child can overcome? I know sometimes things just stay the way they are no matter what you do. Although, there are so many success stories that I hear of. Why can't my child be one of them.
  8. Has anyone had a child diagnosed with a borderline IQ or MR? Do you think they outgrew it? Knew anyone that did? I've heard that OT, classical music, praying, etc.can help. Any experience with any of this? I would like to think my daughter can overcome this! Her IQ was around 70, but I have a feeling the test wasn't done the best. I don't doubt it, but think maybe the score was off. I was told she can still be a mom, have a job, etc. She just may need more help than most.
  9. Anyone use this? Any thoughts? We have been using Barton but my daughter is really pushing back on that. She just doesn't enjoy it. She does have auditory processing and a borderline IQ along with the dyslexia. TIA.
  10. Mostly 1st and 2nd grade levels. 60-70 IQ. They gave her extra points to raise it near 70 because they said she has ADHD (which I am not completely sold on). This was a couple of years ago. I do have concerns on how the testing was done. But I do know it is lower than normal, maybe just not 60.
  11. Hi! Does anyone homeschool a child with a borderline IQ? She has had testing done with shows all of these things.Dyslexia and auditory processing disorder too. She is now 10 and we use Barton Reading and other mixed curriculums. She was evaluated last year and made 1 year progress in 2 years. I was told that this was good and normal. Though, I now feel like we are at a stand still and aren't moving forward very much. Any advice or suggestions? Thanks in advance!
  12. Just wondering if anyone has used any curriculum they think works well for dyslexia? Especially math and reading. My DD is 9 and we are pretty sure she has this, we are getting some testing done. She has already been "labeled" with APD, ADHD, and borderline iq (low iq, which could be from the APD)Thank you in advance!!
  13. Just wondering if anyone has used Anna's House in Colorado and what you thought about it? Thank you!!
  14. Hello. Just wondering if anyone had any opinions or experience in this department? I had my dd do a Gibson Cognitive Test Battery with a woman who is licensed to give the test. She told me she has APD. This is her job and she has been doing this a long time. Her auditory analysis was at a 3 year old level. She just turned 8 and has also been diadnosed with ADHD and a low IQ (borderline). On the 3rd part of the analysis it goes like this: say hot w/o the /h/, say plan w/o the /l/, sun w/o the /s/, pump w/o the /m/. Of course she couldn't do much of this. Would that be a normal thing for a child with a lower IQ, technically a 6 year old, to be able to do this? One part of the test was: if I say /p/ /l/ /a/ /n/ you say plan, /n/ /u/ /p/ you say nup, some of these she did not get, more than half. But at home when I did them with her, she did a little better. Is that because she is used to my voice? She has been having trouble with spelling beginning blends, as in stop, slug, trap... she can't pick up on that 2nd letter. I have to say it real slow a couple times and have her repeat it slowly and then she can hear it. Is that not normal for a child with a lower IQ? She has quite a few on the symptoms of APD. Sometimes she seems fine though, but other times it is like she doesn't fully get what is said. Can the symptoms depend on how she is feeling or of course what noise is distracting? I want to do the full APD test which is $400, but I would hate for them to tell me she is fine and have spent all of that money. KWIM? I know it is better safe than sorry, but then we are back to square one. I know there is something else going on in her little head. This is at least fixable! Any opinions or experience??? Thank you!!!
  15. Just wondering if anyone has used this for their child and had any side effects? Mainly tiredness and irritability?
  16. My Dd has ADHD and we are choosing no meds at this time. I was wondering if anyone has tried the omega vitamins for the ADHD and what results you have had. She is allergic to fish, but I have found some fish free omega 3, 6, and 9 that I would like to try, or am I wasting my money?? We are new to this ADHD stuff, just found out about 5 months ago.
  17. Does she know what autism is? My 8 year old has ADHD and is borderline IQ. We have not told her because she wouldn't even understand what it is. I think when she can fully understand, we will be truthful with her.
  18. We have used Alphabet Island. It has worked great! Every letter has a personality and story that has specific rules. Sounds confusing, but when we started it, it all made sense and she loved it! Still using it!
  19. She has some other behavioral issues as well and I feel that medication would probably make them worse. We are trying to put weight on her, she has severe food allergies to many things! So...I do not want to risk the side effects at the moment. So as of now I am against meds. I might change my mind one day, but I don't feel right about it at the moment.
  20. My daughter was recently diagnosed with ADHD and a borderline IQ. Basically she is behind cognitively a year or two. We have been adding in math for the past year and nothing is sticking! She still has to think about the #1 addition facts but can not remember #2 addition facts at all, much less anything more than that. We have been working on 1's and 2's for about a year. Subtraction is a no go too! Her Dr. says it will just take her A LOT longer than most children, but jeez, as far as adding, we are not moving forward. She has a hard time remembering the names of money coins too. Lots of stuff really! Especially in math! We use number lines, touch math, counting objects, math games on the ipad and computer, counting while tossing a ball back and forth, and jumping jacks, etc. We have used the blocks for Math U See but really can't go anywhere in the curriculum because we can't move forward. I do try to switch it up with time and counting by 5's and stuff like that too. We also are medication free. Any suggestions or related experiences?
