  1. One thing (among many) I do like about The Onion, the articles are well written! Better grammar and more engaging style than some mainstream news outlets these days.
  2. OP, do you mean fiction or nonfiction? Because many significant works of fiction have religious undertones. Is there a specific type/genre you're looking for?
  3. That's wonderful, Jenny. I remember her disappointment a while back when there was a change of instructor (something like that), I'm glad she persevered. May she find satisfying work and great success!
  4. A million times ditto. I know how to grow stuff, should a need arise for a victory garden, but aside from fresh herbs, I find it not worth my time these days. I think if I had a large plot my return on investment would be higher, but time and energy are precious. Instead I choose to support local growers.
  5. I appreciate your tips and must say, you made me laugh! Your evaluations are spot on!
  6. Yeah but even the "try it you'll like it" folks should know better than to pass it off as a *birthday* gift! Just give it as a non-occasion gift.
  7. "And I think you'd really like it, even though you said you wouldn't." This may have been a joke on Happy's part, but I think I would do it. I say this from having a MIL who will come in with new-bought things for dh and the kids, then hand me something I gave her in the past (because she didn't buy me a new thing, but at least has the sense to feel awkward when everyone else realizes she's snubbed me), saying, "Abd I'd like you to have this, because I know you like it." I really wish that the first time that happened, I'd have found a way to pass the item back to her, either to make a point or to open a discussion. That was a stinky thing your MIL did, OP. But she obviously won't worry about it, so don't you, either. In your shoes, next time she handed me a PC catalogue I'd decline to browse it, and mention that you'd let your new consultant know if there's anything you need.
  8. I am opposed to both of them at too early of an age. I think it takes some maturity to fully appreciate the latter HP books, yet once one begins reading, trying to stop halfway through the series is like trying to stop a freight train. So, we wait to start. I can't imagine taking a moral high ground on HP and then green lighting Dr Who. It is ripe with sexual innuendo of all varieties, as well as theology-challenging dialogue and story lines IME waiting until my kids are old enough for quality followup discussions has worked well. We enjoy both.
  9. Yes because what if there were a medical emergency? A legal guardian would have to grant permission for certain things, or risk losing the child to state custody (not necessarily the unofficial "foster" family mom left the child with).
  10. I see. I was wondering whether you'd heard it in a positive or negative context. Sounds like it was in the form of humor/conversation that would include such descriptors as "the little woman," etc. I was deep down wondering if you'd heard it from a religious organization. Cuz that seems to be a popular issue these days.
  11. OP, I am curious, from where/whom did you hear this term that prompted you to ask?
  12. I remember that what made an impression on me was when they started to trickle back into the work force. Several of my neighborhood moms went back for training to become things like surgical technicians and legal assistants. The ones I remember really enjoyed their careers and seemed rejuvenated. Lots of other memories, but that was the most significant. Latchkey kids were nearly nonexistent in my bubble.
  13. I've heard of this done with feral cats that are brought in to be spayed/neutered.
  14. Well that is certainly an option, but one I am unfamiliar with. As texasmama33 noted above, I wouldn't want that heat held in my house!

I would like to think there's a similar hopeful outcome for students displaced after Katrina. Time will tell.
  16. You could make a few balls of chicken wire. Insert one all the way to the outer end of the vent and check it regularly. If you see signs of nesting, insert another ball and push it far enough into the tube to displace the first ball and nesting materials. That way you only have to retrieve the ousted balls off the ground below. Remember though that birds may have several clutches during the summer so you will have to be vigilant about continuing best activities. FWIW, I'd find the funds to have a proper-gauge cage installed by someone from the outside. I would grow tired of constantly policing the vent plus I am slightly paranoid about dryer fires. I'd rather not be unnecessarily blocking the vent. But even with a cage, you need some way to clean in should it become blocked from the inside with lint.
  17. Wonder what he thinks of the recent study that indicates swaddled babies have a higher chance of SIDS? (Disclaimer- I'm not putting stock in either set of generalities, every family is different. I just find the research circle amusing at times.)
  18. I was going to suggest broccoli with sesame seeds but look, an actual recipe! It looks yummy.
  19. I voted but feel like I must say that I considered the "other" option to include creative financing. That left the live at home option off the table. We would allow a recent college grad to live at home for a short period of time with a very clear agreement in place with regard to how long, expectations, contributions, household responsibilities, that sort of thing, in order to pay off student debt and/or for a short time until an already-in-the-works wedding takes place. We may change our minds, certainly, as the economy changes, but we've worked hard to teach and train them towards living independently and hope to be able to see that through. That's an accomplishment that each of them can benefit from, aside from how it affects dh & my financial picture.
  20. Who's NOT happy to get a little bonus? Tip, you'll both feel better. FWIW, I remember the rule. But I'm old enough to believe it passé.
  21. Okay now I know you didn't want cost to influence our replies but HOLY MOLY THAT'S NERVY!!!! In my world, such substantial food items are provided by the hostess or someone who offers without being asked. I can barely fit a big brisket in my own grocery budget, it would make me sick to request it from someone else. But hey, it really does sound delicious! ETA I responded first in a huff and then I read your post more thoroughly. Good grief. I'm with the gals up thread, pick up some grocery store fried chicken and a bottle of Pepsi cola and bring your store-bought with a smile. Well, I'd hate the beautiful salad dish to go to waste but....
  22. I retrieved the iPad and will permit its judicious use after about a week. No real VBI's, I just observed a growing reliance on screen time as entertainment now that the regular studies are winding down.
  23. Well, since you didn't say "we can just find it on the web!" I'll withhold tomatoes! 😄😄😄 Seriously, I believe much of what I struggle with is sentimental. I remember our first-grade, first round of ancient history and it's hard to let that Usborne go!
