  1. I got advice to start at 4th or 5th grade in R&S English. I will only be using the grammar portion, not writing. My boys are 9 & 10. They have had a very little bit on grammar. By little I mean they know noun & verb. They have had just a tad of some of the other 6 parts but not sure they would be able to point them out still, maybe? So I feel like they are at the beginner stage still. I am horrible at English so hard it's for me to tell what they need. I have went over the TC of both books and they look very similar. But I was wondering if the 5th grade book has smaller type or just harder sentence's? Does anyone feel they would be missing out by not doing both books for review? Ex. 6th & 7th grade not reviewing enough. I worry 5th might miss some key factors they might need? Any advice?
  2. Wow, really that's great. I could jump ahead even if we were just beginning grammar?
  3. Just wondering if this is normal to do or if the roots would be unnecessary if someone was already doing a latin program.
  4. Yes more than one a year. I did mean faster as in get through all the books faster instead of doing one a year. They are 9 & 10 right now and starting with grade 3. But they want to get to 5th grade sooner than later. So I was wondering if I could do more like 2 books a year or 1 1/2 and that would get them done early. Ofcourse only if they were understanding would I move on.
  5. Only two years total at any time between K-12, unless they wanted to do it on their own. Yes other languages would be taught also.
  6. Does it make sense to do both? Or will Latin hit all the WWtW areas?
  7. They are 9 & 10. I think they want to speak it mostly. Has anyone learned this or know of a curriculum? I did see Rosetta has one I think?
  8. Which age do you think would be the most beneficial? Also, which program would be best for that time frame?
  9. Thank you everyone! I think I understand more clearly now. I need hand held by IEW so it will be a beginning for us. I really know almost nothing. I always get embarrassed to write even comments or questions because I know so many of you see every single mess up :) I don't want to pain you all :) Seems like I will just need to watch my children to see if it is a stumbling block or helpful throughout the years. Hopefully I will learn enough to be able to notice.
  10. Hi Beth, Do you mind sharing where you did or will do the online writing class? Thank you!
  11. Ellie, What do you suggest or what would you do? Someone who is not a natural writer and needs help to teach it.
  12. I had never heard this before? I thought it was kind of known as a "good program". I realize each program/curr probably has people on both sides of it, opinion wise. But if some actually think IEW could be a bad move please tell me more?
  13. Have you looked at superchargedscience.com or sciencelearningspace.com? I would send Aurora your questions (she is the teacher) and I think she could give you some really helpful ideas and have good insight. It's set up to either study "on grade level" or "by topic". When someone chooses to do grade level they always have the choice to then go even deeper by hopping over to the topic area which has more content than the grade level does. She breaks science down into what a child needs to know before HS and also College. I find this system very helpful and also love that its flexible to each child's need and ability. Each of the topics are geared in a way that you can study them as in depth as you would like. There is also advanced topics. So I would think in your position you would have many ways to keep your son learning. She also has some awesome math stuff.. As a bonus I love that you can ask all the questions you want and they are very helpful.
  14. What would you add to IEW's writing curriculum through out the school years to make sure they have an good writing ability?
  15. Im wondering if I wanted to do both which to do first? Or possibly English from the roots up between Caesar's English and Word within the Word? Any ideas?
  16. Do you like it? I have it on my list to do but wondering if its necessary?
  17. Latin/Greek Roots will help Vocab? Full Latin Program will help Grammar & possibly something like Spanish in the future. But not really Vocab? So here are my confused thoughts/questions on this: (helping with foreign language) If someone studies Spanish (or other language) for the amount of years I see people doing Latin with their children wouldn't they learn it just as well? I've always heard after someone learns something like Spanish other languages are easier to learn too. I need simple so Im trying to figure out what I really want and what I want to cut. I like the idea of Latin but I think the Roots could get done better. I think I care more about Vocabulary. Im banking on Rod & Staff to give a great grammar education. So with all these thoughts can I get some of your thoughts :)
  18. So do you do both roots and a latin program? If yes would this be an uncommon thing? Or are the roots already going to be in a Latin program?
  19. Would using Latin/Greek root vocab curr help with a second language later on? Or would only the Latin Grammar be what makes a second language easier?
  20. I'm clearly still a bit confused. And I also keep going back and forth on what I want to do. I'm not sure if the threads I keep reading keep pulling me back in or I really want to do a full Latin program. I have Caesar's English, I also have Prima Latina. Is this doing the same thing twice? I also keep reading how Latin helps with Modern Formal Languages, would just doing the roots also help?
