If Latin, Then No Grammar? I'm confused!
Excelsior! Academy replied to Linda...inOwasso's topic in K-8 Curriculum Board
Bumping to the top. Just because I'm enjoying this thread!:) -
Mine are all on holidays or very close to them, so we're off. Dh takes off, too. 2 Dd's are born in October. One is on Dh's brother's birthday. One is on my sister's boy's birthday. 1 dd is the usually day before or after Thanksgiving. 1 dd is New Year's day. Since the 2 are truly on holidays. It would be unfair for the other two if we didn't do the same for them. We usually do them up big. Last year dd #1 had 30 kiddos there. We cut back! The year we went concierge during Christmas to Disneyland we had them each invite 1 friend to a movie or sleepover for their birthday. We explained that Disneyland was a lot of their birthday and Christmas combined! I'm not a big fan of "this is for your birthday and Christmas," but have you seen the prices for Concierge over Christmas?!

Sheet changing - I don't get it
Excelsior! Academy replied to Danestress's topic in General Education Discussion Board
Wow! Some of you impress me. Washing every other day? You are superwoman! To the MIL who vacuumed 2x, mopped 2x, ironed sheets. Oh, my! I do bathe the kiddos daily, even with eczema. We just eat and scrub with lots of oatmeal. Sheets get changed at least every 2 weeks in the winter more in the summer. -
She didn't say she didn't mean to do it. Her eyes just got big. She just moved it out of the way by batting it and it hit the wall. Still NOT okay! But I really don't think it is indicative to an underlying problem. I feel like I should follow through, but I think the cleaning the walls and making beds sounds like a good idea for any issues that may arise in the future. I really needed the hugs, even the virtual ones. Thank you! She gets to bed early. Getting to sleep is a whole 'nuther issue!

Okay. So I am up for the Mom of the year award. My dd11 has been having a bit of an attitude lately. We've been cracking down and being more consistant. Well this morning when I told her to get up for the nth time she batted an empty gumball machine across the room and hit the opposite wall. It made a loud noise, but I honestly don't think she realized she threw it that hard. (She is not an agressive type person, really!) Well, before I could think it through I said, "Okay, 2 math lessons today." The thing is she really does not like math right now. I do believe she needed some type of discipline, but I am thinking loss of MP3 or dishes, etc. Is it horrible that I gave her extra school work?

History, No. My public school education left me feeling pretty uneducated in the history sense. I need to learn it more than them. I teach it to them while I quietly learn with them. Yes to Science on nature studies. No if we are using a curriculum like we just finished. We did Chemistry. Even though the experiments were pretty tame, giving an 11yo, 8yo, 6yo, and 4yo free reign to complete their experiments alone. Ugh, no.

Latina Christiana I and II. When we finish (summer?) we will move into Henle. I went back and forth between Wheelocks and Henle, but DH reviewed both and firmly decided on Henle. So, there you go! I'm still debating on when to start dd6. I think I'll wait until dd4 is old enough and teach them together like I am doing the olders. It has worked well and is waaay easier then trying lots of levels at the same time. Hey, I'm new to this Latin thing, too!

I know when we were in college we were considered low income due to work study, etc. We were able to get a tax refund legally, a small refund, even though we did not have a technical income. Work study, etc. is considered grant money. We were not on welfare. So I assume it is just something similar to this. I do think it is an advance, though. I could be wrong, but I am planning like it is just in case.

So, what are YOU reading...
Excelsior! Academy replied to Luanne's topic in High School and Self-Education Board
Does this board count?:confused::D -
We have a group of friends, about 7 families, that all use these. They ALL LOVE them. Basically, it is just a taped classroom. So you will see discipline problems, etc. I do not have any high schoolers yet, so I can't comment fully. But I personally prefer to teach myself. If I didn't want to teach a subject I would probably put them in a real classroom setting, not a virtual one. JMHO

The Golden Compass
Excelsior! Academy replied to AudreyTN's topic in General Education Discussion Board
I didn't watch The Golden Compass because I read what the author's intent was in an interview he did. I didn't want to support him in any way. That said, I've heard that even those who like the books didn't care for the movie. It was just too watered down. -
We had to make our bed that way growing up. I hated for some strange reason, so I make mine the right (hee, hee) way now. Actually, I have some cute pillows that look better without seeing the top sheet. So I just make the bed, and pull the comforter over then top with pillows. Since it doesn't matter which way the sheet is I do it with the design on top.

Anyone believe in ghosts?
Excelsior! Academy replied to hsmamainva's topic in General Education Discussion Board
That sums it up for me.
