  1. I've been very lazy about dog's teeth. They are now terrible. What suggests the hive for getting them clean? And can you share if your suggestion is just maintenance or for severe tartar build up. Looking for suggestions on toothbrush, toothpaste, treatments, treats and more.... thanks!
  2. Oooooooh I think I'll be taking a look at this tonight. Thanks!
  3. For about 10 weeks now 11 boys have been meeting w/ a retired engineer. He has very patiently led them through some of the Lego Robotics programming while dealing w/ boys that were interested and others that weren't interested. He has a good leader and a computer "nerd" (said affectionaltey). What could we get him as a small thank you? Manly and maybe computer cool? (like he has the cutest, tiniest mouse w/ a retractable cord!) Or just something that says thanks!!!!
  4. Just too lazy. Never bother. Happy w/o it!
  5. No opinion, but where is this? NOTHING like that around here.....

  7. Whether or not you SHOULD buy a Sienna is great. (Toyotas and Hondas are great cars!) The mileage does seem VERY low. We don't drive a ton and our 2000 is at 123k miles. WHATEVER you do, take it to a mechanic. CarFax will only tell you what they know. No accident doesn't mean there wasn't an accident, just that one wasn't reported to them. I would say though that at somepoint, even if the mileage is low, little things do start to break on cars. Doors stick, tape players (do you even need that?) stop working, radio volume controls stop turning and more of those little things....
  8. I don't know. The original listing realtor is making it sound like it's likely to go through to the original contract. The realtor deals ONLY in shortsales so knows what she's doing (so all her listings are pending. An agent starts a shortsale and then passes it to her to complete, manage and push through). And the purchaser is a guy that owns 30+ rental propoerties. By guess is he has plenty of connections too. (We offered 10% over his offer price and they went w/ his offer. I think those connections worked for him!) RE: Shortsales - I've done a lot of research and reading on it. I'm not sure anyone really understands it and the banks aren't telling. Like I said, around here the banks buy 99.9% of the prorerties at auction. Yes, I get this when there are not other bids. But I'm seeing bids that are higher than the outstanding mortgage, by 25%. So what are the banks gaining there? It's all very fishy and confusing! And I'm especially sorry to those that are caught up on the selling or foreclosure end. There's no way for you to navigatge the system or know that if XYZ happens that you'll be out from under the mess. :( AND, can I add one more thing that I think is SO WRONG???? When you go to purchase a Fannie Mae foreclosure they advertise that you can get the home for as low as 3% down. This is a big selling point for them. Isn't that part of what got people into this mess in the first place??????? Why is the cycle starting again? STEP DOWN FROM SOAP BOX NOW....
  9. Hey, you took my post, I was going to say the same thing. :)
  10. We put a non-winning bid in for a house shortsale in Oct. Someone else got the contract and it was pending when in Feb the house went to foreclosure auction. The bank purchased it at auction in Feb (which they seem to ALWAYS do here). It is still pending w/ the original realtor, they are hoping the bank (Fannie Mae) will honor the original shortsale contract from Oct. So, realtors and those experienced/ w shortsales, have you heard of a bank honoring a shortsale contract after having purchased a home at foreclosure auction? What are the odds of this? (We're still really interested in this house).
  11. We have 100 families. We pay $70/semester/child w/ a max of 3 kids (so if you have 4 kids you still pay for 3). If you teach a class (as a parent) you rec'v a discount of 1 child. Art is an addt'l $10/semester for consumable supplies and high school has addt'l fees. Majority of our classes are parent taught, we have some classes that are paid teachers - TaeKwondo, most art classes, and some high school classes. Everyone is expected to volunteer 1/2 the time they are there (that might be as a teacher's aid or as a teacher) We have 4 hours of classes, 30 weeks. So you'd be paying $140 for the year for 120 hours of classes or $1.16/hour - a great deal, even if I do volunteer. Our fees cover copy costs, admin supplies, website, paid teachers (we are a co-op so these fees are not paid by the famillies taking these classes, but rather spread across), curriculum, microscopes, and more......
  12. Varies btwn a mop bucket and s mixing bowl. We prob wouldn't make it to the toilet in time and this is a huge help. Sorry to hear you're sick!!! Best of luck!
  13. I think that it would be very loud. But, in addition to that, if most houses have a basement and this one doesn't you'd likely have resale issues. Keep looking and best of luck!
  14. I recently picked up a bag of all natural (maybe organic?) peanut butter granola at Kroger. It was one of the best foods I've encountered. It was on clearance, so they no longer have it. I kept the bag so I could try to copy it. Hubby, sweet hubby, cleaned up the kitchen. It's gone. So, help me make a good for you and oh so yummy peanut butter granola, just like this long lost yummy bag. :) * What grains would you use - it had about 6 different grains (I think it had oats, quinoa, millet, and other things) * Where would you get your grains? * What recipe would you use (I just want a hint of peanut butter, not strong) * What oil would you use, why and where would you get this (beyond caonola and olive I know nothing) Promise me it'll be just as delicious
  15. Didn't work for us. 12 eggs - 9 cracked. (At least they didn't have that boiled ooze) Not easier to peel. Family thought the whites were more rubbery. Brown spots didn't bother us. :(
  16. Notice the fine print at the bottom that says they have one-way charges?????
  17. Use bankrate.com to take a look at their loan amoritization. It'll show you monthly payments, total payments and what happens if you add extra principal if you wanna do that.
  18. Someone mentioned a diaper w/ something on it (can't recall, mustard, choc pudding, I don't know). And lick it! Yuck :) We'll put small balls in the cabinet, have put a sleeping child in the bathtub, and have changed out hubby's coffee for brown colored water.
  19. Haven't read all the posts, but somethign that is important is keeping the puppy on a leash during the day and attaching that to your waste. Google "umbilical cord training" or "tethering". I think these are key to letting puppy know who is in charge and let them not stress out. And yes, crate time is important to them. The puppy is stil little. If you had a baby you'd give it soem down time adn would't stimluate it all day so be sure to give it a break too.
  20. See, as a white person I've always thought it's good to not "see color". But if you're in a minority group, couldn't this be somewhat insulting? I think sometimes when we saw we don't see color we're saying "you seem just like me (white)." Laurie 4b - thanks for your response. Lots we've thought about and lots more to think about. Your story shares some of my thoughts/ concerns - it's those teen years that make the difference as they are looking for their identity. You take a "normal" child, teen years are hard. You take a foster (adoptive) child, it's harder. You take a foster (adoptive) child in a mixed family and the identity challenges may be even harder.
  21. RaeAnne- While it's a very hard road, we are looking to foster/ adopt through the county system. There are no fees asociated w/ this and you are paid a daily stipen for the child's expenses, rec'v medical care for them and frequently rec'v benefits after they've been adopted. It's not an easy road but may be the answer to your heart ache and the heart ache of a local child needing a home. I'm actually not even that concerned about race differences while a child is younger. It's more preparing them for adolesence. For example durin gour fostering classes a black woman was explaining how a white family can never teach a black boy what it means to be a black teen - to have the police and society questioning you more than they would a white boy, etc. Or what it means to be a proud black woman...
  22. So, right around this time of year I, like most of you, need a break. For the past few years I've made a 5 hour trip to be w/ my husband's aunt and uncle - that are great spoilers and great a wonderful place to relax. At the same time my SIL drives 2 hours to spend the weekend there also (I wouldn't go w/o her. It's a sort of girls get away/ break. SIL is my age and enjoy hangin out w/ her.) We don't do this every year and we don't plan it a year in advance. It's just when we feel like it. We don't do a ton. We'll go out to eat a couple times. Prob go shopping a little. Sit around and just hang a lot. Asked SIL the other day if she'd like to do this (haven't checked w/ the aunt, just the SIL). Today SIL suggests she bring her 5yo daughter. That would give her hubby an easier time w/ their 2 boys. I love my niece, but was looking forward to the break away from kids. What do I do? It's not my aunt. It's her aunt. It's not my child. It's hers. In the past SIL has never brought her daughter. Not sure if that's the only way she can get away or not (sometimes her hubby isn't the most supportive). Do I say anything? Do I still go and just have fun w/ a little one there? Do I kindly suggest to her that I was looking forward to a break (and think she might want one too?) Do I ask if there is another option? Or maybe date that would work where she wouldn't have to bring her daughter? (My guess, though, is that if I say anything I'll hurt feelings.) Advice? (I WANT A BREAK :) )
  23. We have 7 & 10yo DS. We've been called to adopt or at least foster. We were very open to adopting of another ethnicity, but have started to have doubts. We're not doubting ourselves, but wondering what is best for the child. This isn't about racism, but about being able to instill culture and history. What do you think? We are caucasian and outside of church (about 25% AA) and the pool (about 40% AA) at the summer, surrouned by mostly whites (co-op, scouts, choir, ...) If you're willing to share your thoughts here or PM me it would be greatly apprecaited.
  24. Can you help me w/ this, please? (SM 5B IP, pg. 38) Eight colleagues went out for lunch together. The lunch cost $135.50. Bill paid $4.50 less than the average amount paid by the rest. How much did Bill pay? We took $135.50/8 to get an avg or $16.93 then subtracted off the $4.50 to get $12.43 The book suggests the answer is $13. What do you get and how? Thanks
