  1. I don't know how many times I've received packages *with delivery confirmation* that didn't match my address. Since I'm a somewhat decent person, I deliver the package to the correct recipient, but I don't appreciate doing the mailman's job. We recently had a time-sensitive letter from the  IRS (!) that required a signature. According to the hand-written note on the envelope, the carrier received it mid-November. Mid-December, I received a "final notice" that it was going to be returned to sender if I didn't come to the regional center and pick it up since it was not able to be delivered. I am a homeschooling mom. I am at home nearly every day when the mailman comes. I received multiple packages during that time, that the mailman knocked on the door to deliver. Don't tell me that he couldn't have gotten my signature for a month!

I'm sorry that you are dealing with this. You are far from alone.

  2. who will not be watching the Super Bowl today? I have zero interest in football. Today I will be attending the baptism of a friend's baby, and then I will have the afternoon to myself to paint the kitchen. Bliss! lol

  3. The Colour of Magic is one of my least favorite Pratchett. Try the Death books. They are hilarious. I am a particular fan of The Death of Rats AKA The Grim Squeeker.

I started with Mort, and was immediately hooked. My plan was to read the first book of each "strand" so I could get to know all of the main characters, but I'm rethinking it now.

  4. I picked up some pens for zentangling last night. Now I need a book...

Still trying to get into The Color of Magic. I haven't found a character I like yet. I may abandon it and go back to the witches.

My SIL loves Marilynne Robinson. Her books haven't appealed to me, but maybe I'll read one and then discuss it with SIL. The idea that discussion launches a book several levels up in 'belovedness" makes sense to me--some of my most loved books I read first in college lit classes.

  5. I have the whole afternoon to myself…to get the kitchen ready for a remodel, and finish painting the bathroom. Boo. At least I can listen to some fluff--the local library had Dad is Fat by Jim Gaffigan in audio format, so I guess I'll paint and laugh.

  6. Week three already? I'm continuing my Discworld binge, and am considering trying the zentangle thing. Would zentangling be a good quiet time activity to do with kids? I could call it homeschool art...

    In Progress:

Adventuring With Children by Nan Jeffrey

The Color of Magic by Terry Pratchett

    Finished Books:

    1. The Power of Habit by Charles Duhigg

    2. Hallucinations by Oliver Sacks

    3. Mort by Terry Pratchett

    4. Equal Rites by Terry Pratchett

  7. I can't keep up! Finished Oliver Sacks' Hallucinations, and decided I needed to read some fiction, but nothing too heavy or depressing. I had never read Terry Pratchett, but he seems popular among WTMers, so I looked up a complicated matrix of where to start, and read half of Mort last night. Why did it take me so long to find this series? It's exactly what I like to read.

  8. I think that the 6+ is comically large. When my husband went to the apple store to try out phones, he wanted to put the 6+ in his pocket to see if it fit, but he was afraid of looking like the worst shoplifter ever. lol

  9. That is so sad.

But then I had a toymaker grandmother and she never made me any toys.

If I had a bookshop owning husband, I could read everything while I was meant to be unpacking it, couldn't I? Kind of the way a kid reads the books they discover under their bed when they are supposed to be cleaning their room?

When I worked in a bookstore, it was a constant fight against the temptation to read the books as I unpacked them. :)

I finished The Power of Habit, and am trying to identify "keystone habits" to work on. I checked out Oliver Sacks' book Hallucinations for kindle, and have read the first few pages. It's been a rough homeschool day, so I haven't had much time for reading.

  10.

As for St. Helens, they know way ahead of time when there will be an eruption. They were able to evacuate the entire mountain before the eruption in 1980. The only person who died was an old man who refused to leave--he wanted to go with the mountain. So that is not a concern. I'd be more concerned about packing the itinerary too full to enjoy nature and really relax.

Actually, 57 people died as a result of the 1980 Mt. St. Helens eruption. Many were not in the "restricted" area. Harry Truman, the stubborn old guy you mentioned, is just the most famous. That said, I wouldn't worry about a sudden eruption. We're planning a trip to Mt. St. Helens this summer. :)

  11. i'll do a Vonnegut read-along. I read most of his novels when I was in college, and I've been afraid to re-read them, fearing that they will meet the same fate as Catcher in the Rye--I loved it as a teen, but find it annoying as an adult. I immediately realize that I need to take that back--I re-read The Sirens of Titan, and still love it. I'm not sure I could read Breakfast of Champions again, though. :)

  12. I'll be joining this year. I read embarrassingly few books last year and need to do better this year. Yesterday dh gave me some time for school planning and I read Geology of the Pacific Northwest in preparation for our Spring science activities. I'm not sure if I should count it, it's 100 pages and about a sixth grade reading level. :) I'm also working on The Power of Habit by Duhigg (Kindle) and Adventuring with Children by Jeffrey (hardcopy).

  13. I'm in! We have been eating too much takeout. December has been better--I've been forcing myself to cook. We have some long-term goals that we will never reach if we continue to fritter away ten dollars here and ten dollars there. We also need to up our retirement savings by a considerable amount. gulp. And alas, I need to get out of the habit of spending four dollars at Joann, seven dollars at Hobby Lobby, six at Michaels…you get the picture. lol

  14. Since I'm breastfeeding, I don't go down to 500 calories on fast days. I'm averaging 1100 or so on fast days, and 2400 or so other days. I am losing well--I broke through a spell of gaining and losing the same three pounds, so I am pleased.
