  1. I found this picture online. No this is not my apartment. My shelves are white like the walls. But this is minimalism with lots of books.

Hmm. I like this a lot, but it doesn't look minimalist to me. I think it's all the stuff on the shelves in front of the books. That's what my shelves look like right now, and I think it looks cluttery and like the stuff's about to fall on the floor. :) I'm also imagining leaves and petals on the floor under the droopy plant. lol I guess I'm the pessimistic minimalist.

  2. Modern apartment in the city, with Eames and Le Corbusier furniture. I would work as an archivist in an academic library, and play old-time music on the side. I would travel with a like-minded friend. :)

But really, living alone is not good for me. I'm better off with my rug rats and husband. :)

  3. My reaction to MSG is dose-dependent. The only time I had a significant reaction was while living in China, after eating with a friend. He was showing me how to cook some traditional Chinese dishes, and put scoop after scoop of a white powder in the wok. "What is that?" I asked. "MSG" he replied.   My heart was racing for the rest of the evening.

Maybe the restaurant uses more MSG than average? It's hard to know. Feel better soon!

  4. I just signed up for a free trial of Audible. My first book was the Ian McKellen reading of The Odyssey. What should I get with my second credit? I'm looking for a meaty story, appropriate for all ages, interesting for two very active boys. Go! :)

  5. What I don't understand is why does a person enter into a contract to buy a house BEFORE they have it inspected?  As I said before, the wording on the contract pretty much made it impossible for us to back out no matter what was found.  I should not say no matter what was found.  Basically unless we could prove the house would fall down tomorrow, it would not be easy to get out of the contract.  Had I understood how stuff worked, I would not have agreed to the terms.

I agree these people are taking it to extremes, but I do sort of understand their position.  People get screwed all the time.  The previous home owners of our home denied a crap load of things that for sure they lied about.  I imagine most people lie.

Your contract stunk. When we were looking for houses in a hot market where houses were under contract the day they came on the market, we had contracts with several houses with a three day cooling off clause, and a longer inspection clause. We would make an offer, and if it was accepted, then we would do the research on the neighborhood, etc. One house we rejected the day after the contract was made because there were something like 90 registered sex offenders within a 1/2 mile radius. With another house, we made a contract, were happy with the neighborhood, had an inspection, but still had a feeling we were missing something. We had an electrician come out after the inspection clause period, and realized that nothing was to code, the knob and tube wiring was arcing in places, and the breaker box was one that had been recalled because it was prone to bursting into flames. Added to the furnace that needed to be replaced immediately, it was too much. We were able to break the contract, forfeiting only earnest money. Better to forfeit $1500 than to have $30,000 worth of repairs immediately upon moving in!

  6. The Catholic high school will probably use ecclesiastical pronunciation. I am planning on using ecclesiastical pronunciation because I think it sounds prettier.   Classical pronunciation makes me think of Pontius Pilate in Life of Brian.

  7. I can understand the pique vs. peak thing. Say that your interest level is at a steady state:

    _____________________________

    Then something suddenly interests you:

    ________^________

See? It's a "peak" in your interest level.

  8. How else do you interpret the quote above?  "Please stop throwing the 'As a Christian' card.  It is insulting."

The construction "As a Christian---" implies that you are speaking for Christians in general. Sometimes that construction is used to imply that those who do not agree are not Christians. Or not Christian "enough." Christians are not a monolithic group of people who hold the same beliefs on every issue. People talk about their faith on this board every day--there are lots of prayer threads, questions about theology and church, and even entire social groups devoted to various faith traditions.

  9. I was surprised that there were no questions about diet or weight. I am 38, 40 for the test, and I got an age of 23 and 5-year risk of dying of .1%. I've been walking around thinking that being overweight means I'm going to keel over from a heart attack any minute now.
