  1. You can buy it, but you will need to sign up through their OASIS system. It has been awhile since I did it, but I think you have to verify that you are a homeschooler and then they will set up an account for you. After that you can purchase the teacher resources. Yvonne in NE

  3. I haven't used the Chemistry course, but I have used all the others and I was pleased with them. I did have a friend use the Chemistry course with a 5th and 7th grader and she found it challenging. It would probably depend upon your comfort level with the subject. You might also want to look at Christian Kids Explore Chemistry by Bright Ideas Press. You might find it more appropriate for a 3rd grader. Yvonne in NE DD-8th, DS-6th, DD-5th
  4. The TE has just the answers. The SM has the problems 'worked' out. Although some of the solutions are abbreviated and not much use. Yvonne in NE
  5. Janice: The reason that you can't find Volume 2 is that it hasn't been available until the last couple of weeks. You can call Bright Ideas Press and place an order, but it hasn't found its way to the website yet. Maggie @ Bright Ideas Press posted the following on the AAH yahoo group a couple of weeks ago: "Greetings, friends, Today, we have great news! The Student Reader is now IN OUR WAREHOUSE! It is amazing - twice as many pics as AAH1. So much cool information - wish I'd had a history book liked this when I was in school. And it goes all the way to the 21st century. The Student Activity Book will be arriving next week. We are now accepting pre-orders. We will be sending out the Student Reader and Student Activity Book as soon as both have arrived. To those who order the set, we will send the Teacher's Guide under separate cover as soon as it is available. Thank you so much for your prayers and please continue to pray for us that the Teacher Guide will be ready soon. It is so hard waiting on someone else to finish the job! To order, please call our customer service number at 1-877-492-8081. We hope to also be able to take orders on our website soon." Bright Ideas Press graciously supplied those of us that used Volume I a year ago the .pdf files of Volume 2 so that we could continue with the course. If you are at all familiar with Vol 1, Vol 2 follows the same format. It covers from the Civil War to 2001 (4 units, 8 lessons each unit) We have done a lesson a week, which involved reading the student text, mapwork, notebook pages, review sections, and for further studies. There are 4 FFS per lesson and they give the child the opportunity to do further research on a particular topic. In the teacher's guide there is a list of additional books that go with each unit, activity ideas, timeline suggestiuons, individuals to read biographies about, etc. I have required my kids to read 2 historical fiction books per unit and read and write a report on 3 individuals per unit. My kids are in 8th, 6th, and 5th. Yvonne in NE
  6. We are just finishing vol 2 of AAH and I have been pleased with both volumes. It is more of a traditional textbook approach, so if you don't like textbooks you might not care for it. However after 6+ years of putting things together myself I really appreciated the fact that it is pick up and go!! The For Further Studies have been very useful in teaching my kids how to research and find answers for themselves. Not sure if you are aware that MOH Volume 3 is written and should be available this summer. Yvonne in NE
  7. It is intended for high school. The minimum recommended time is 18 weeks, but it can be stretched to 26 weeks if all the recommended supplements are used. Yvonne in NE
  8. It is brand new from IEW. http://www.excellenceinwriting.com/index.php?q=product/windows-world%3A-introduction-literary-analysis-teacher/student-combo Yvonne in NE
  9. The Earth/Space science course is rigorous enough for high school and you won't need to add anything to it. I have a friend whose 9th grade dd is using it and it is enough. Yvonne in NE
  10. Well, it usually takes her between 45min - 1 hour. Sometimes if she is doing a more involved experiment she may spend more time, but that doesn't happen very often. She alternates between 4 days/wk and 5 days/wk. I don't know if you have done this, but you can go to the BJ website and watch sample lessons. Yvonne in NE
  11. This year my oldest used BJ Earth/Space Science with the DVDs. I have been extremely pleased with the content and how well my dd has learned the material. (FWIW I'm not easily impressed!) I don't believe she would have gotten anywhere near the same benefit if I had tried to use it without the DVDs. She has done most of the experiments, but it was very beneficial to see them done first on the DVD and then to attempt them on her own. Next year she will be using BJ Biology with the DVDs and my two youngest will be using the 7th grade Life Science with DVDs. It was also nice to have everything planned out for me. The lessons, assignments, quizes, test, experiments are already planned. Minimal planning on my part -- at least for this subject! Yvonne in NE
  12. You can buy the TE and whatever else you want from Pearson, but you will need to sign up through their Oasis system and provide proof that you are homeschooling. Once that is done you will have an account and can order teacher as well as student resources. http://phcatalog.pearson.com/program_multiple.cfm?site_id=6&discipline_id=806&subarea_id=1312&program_id=21021&view_feat=1 Go back to this page at the Pearson site and click on the Oasis link at the top of the page. 13. We've had success with Foerster's this year. Math subjects are not my favorite, but it has gone well this year. Yvonne in NE
  14. My 8th grade dd used this course this year and it could definitely be used as a high school course. However I'm very glad that I used the DVDs from BJ to teach it. My dd has learned alot from this course, but I don't think it would have been as effective if I had tried to use it without the DVDs. Yvonne in NE
  15. Here is the plan for my dd. Math - Jacobs Geometry Science - BJ Biology w/ DVD History - World Geography Literature - Sonlight 200 Grammar - AG High School Reinforcement Latin - Latin in the Christian Trivium Book 3 Piano Spanish - possibly a coop class 5-7 hours depending on the day Yvonne in NE
  16. I have used both the SWI and this year the continuation course. I would recommend that you go to the IEW website and print out the lesson plans that go with the SWI-C. http://www.excellenceinwriting.com/index.php?q=catalog/%5Bcatpath-raw%5D-0 Hopefully once you have the lesson plans things will seem a little clearer. Yvonne in NE
  17. I had my oldest dd use R&S through book 8 and then this year she is using AG's High School Reinforcements books. It has worked great. Just enough review to remember what she has learned, but not a huge time commitment. I do not think she would have done nearly as well if I had not had her go through R&S 7 and 8. She rarely has any questions about the exercises in the AG book, and she rarely makes any mistakes. Yvonne in NE
  18. Holly: I've given the IOWA test to my kids, starting at 3rd grade, for the last 6 years and have had good success with the test prep materials sold by BJUP. There are two different approaches; a test prep that emphsizes content, or a test prep that emphasizes test-taking strategies. The first year I had them take the IOWA test I had them work through a book called "Test for Sucess" which emphasizes test-taking strategies. It is published by Riverside Publisihing which is the same company that publishes the IOWA test. Subsequent years we have used the content approach. "Better Test Scores" is the other series we have used. There is a choice of three books; Reading, Language, or Math. Each booklet begins with a tryout test, and depending upon how the kids do on the tryout test we pick what sections to go over, then conclude with the 2nd tryout test at the end of the book. If they don't miss any on the 1st tryout test we are finished with that book and I don't see any reason to proceed further. Just thought I'd share our experiences. Yvonne in NE
  19. Stacey: Just do a google search for online world history timeline or online us history timeline. You'll get a number of hits. Yvonne
  20. http://www.apologiaonline.com/conf/ Click on The Handout for "Teaching High School at Home" video. You can see his ideas on this handout. Yvonne
  21. I've never created my own World Geography course, but I did come across this on the Apologia website the other day. In geography, she looked in the paper once a week and found a new locality. She then did a one-page essay on where the locality was, what its significance to the world was, what the economic base was, and what kind of government there was. This came off the handout that goes with Jay Wile's talk on homeschooling through high school. He stated that he stayed away from textbooks for history and geography courses and the above is how he taught geography. At least it wouldn't be expensive! Yvonne in NE
  22. I have my oldest dd using a BJ DVD science course this year and have been very pleased with it. I too thought that $399 was expensive, but actually it isn't any different than the local homeschool coop. To pay for the lab and class I would have to pay $400 in tuition for the year, plus the books. The $399 gives me the class, labs, and books. Plus I don't have to run her the 20 miles into town for the class. It is all just a matter of perspective and what your other options are. Yvonne in NE
  23. We finished Rod & Staff's 8th grade book last year and my dd is using Analytical Grammar's High School Reinforcement book this year. It is just enough review to reinforce what she has learned, but not time consuming. I believe AG plans on having 4 different books by the time the series is complete. This year she is using the American Authors book. You can check out samples at http://www.analyticalgrammar.com. Yvonne in NE
  24. Not sure if you are talking about the DVD course or just the labs on DVD. My oldest dd is taking the 8th grade science course on DVD and it has been well worth the cost. She has learned so much more than if I had tried to teach it to her myself and her 'instructor' is enthusiastic about the subject matter!! We do most of the labs (called investigations), but she is able to watch them first on the DVD and then does them herself. Yvonne in NE
  25. This is my plan for my dd this fall. Math - Jacobs Geometry Literature - Sonlight 200 Lit Selections Grammar - Analytical Grammar HS Reinforcement Book 2 Writing - Subject Driven (finishing IEW Continuation this spring) Science - BJ Biology w/ DVD History - BJ Geography Vocabulary - Still deciding Latin - Latin in the Christian Trivium Book 3 Music - Piano Office XP Course Bible - Positive Action's Route 66 Yvonne in NE
