  1. I taught mine to respond in Latin. Problem over. I did later go talk to the parents ( this was at church and at soccer) and introduced myself and explained our educational choices. The parents were a bit intimidated or embarrassed but we ended the conversation peaceably. One of the kids asked me if I knew what my kids had said and if it really was Latin. I explained what they said and that they did learn Latin to which the kids said to the parent, "I never learn COOL stuff like Latin at school."
  2. Colorado School of Mines has an impressive Math program.
  3. It is one on one, not a classroom. We have done all four years of high school with The Homeschool Spanish Academy and my ds has done very well. We are looking into him taking the AP Spanish test this spring as he has done so well. I haven't found any problems with the curricula, but my ds is speaking and reading fluent Spanish now so I admit to not looking too closely. It has been extremely successful and cost effective.
  4. 67 here. Pretty right on unless I have a new book and then I am sure I drop down considerably.
  5. We did them as read alouds at 12 but I wouldn't have a problem at 11. We wanted to read the Narnia series, a The Hobbitt and LOTR before Harry Potter which is why it took until 12. I personally thought 12 was perfect. They were old enough to be engaged and not scared but still young enough to really get into the magic.
  6. We did music theory and piano class as an elective for credit but the piano competitions we listed as extracurricular.
  7. Art of Problem Solving Calculus has been fantastic for my ds. He is taking the class through AOPS. It is very challenging but has been great for him. You can do the books independently. http://www.artofproblemsolving.com
  8. I am infinitely grateful for this WTM, particularly this High School Board, and the posters who have helped us shape our oldest' high school career. I thought it might be helpful to those coming up to have a best thing I learned thread. 1. Read and follow, "How to be a High School Superstar". http://www.amazon.com/How-High-School-Superstar-Revolutionary/dp/0767932587/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1418495354&sr=8-1&keywords=how+to+be+a+high+school+superstar This has been invaluable for my ds' high school career, because of this book we restructured his high school experience which has led to him speaking at a Scratch Conference both in Barcelona, Spain and at MIT. It also helped him firm up his passion and he has spent many hours teaching others and innovating with hardware extensions in Scratch and other programs. 2. Art of a Problem Solving - As with most curricula, I generally hear about it here first. AOPS has been great for my ds and now for my dd. 3. Pennsylvania Homeschoolers and the possibility of getting APs in High School. These are just a few of the things I learned here but have changed the course of our high school experience.
  9. My ds just recv'd notification that he has recv'd the President Sewall award at the University of Colorado Boulder (CU) which also puts him in the Honors program for the College of Arts and Sciences. He is also a semi-finalist for the Boettcher Scholarship which provides 40 full- ride scholarships to any school in Colorado. The bonus is that even being named a semi-finalist carries scholarship money to CU. As always, I am deeply grateful for this board as it has helped us to shape his high school career.
  10. Homeschool Spanish Academy. My ds has used it for all of his high school career and is now in his 4th year. We really like the personalized instruction, the ability to actually talk over Skype to his instructor in Guatemala and their comprehensive curriculum. I personally like the ease with which I can also watch his progress and keep on eye on his assignments and grades. It is also fairly cost effective for private instruction. http://spanish.academy
  11. Thanks for the help finding the videos. My ds was in the midst of the class and we freaked out a bit when they were taken down.
  12. All of mine read at 3. We kept reading Bob books and library books and playing word games and then at 5 we did a full phonics program so they understood why the words worked and for spelling purposes.
  13. I was told by Admissions at selective and highly selective schools that they preferred AP's over CC. Many students in our area do CC so I was glad I asked as it allowed us to structure my ds' Jr./Sr. years differently.
  14. I did Pre-Algebra with my twins and learned and finally understood so much more than I ever had before. It was great. Now, have to move on to Algebra. If they can finally explain Geometry to me, I will be so very happy!
  15. Thanks, Laura. I actually think he will be fine, but sometimes my Mom's heart worries. He is independent, loves to learn and has been away from home for weeks at a time without us and seems to handle it fine.
  16. He is not sure where he is going yet. He has been accepted to School of Mines but has applications completed to 4 others and 2 more almost done.
  17. For Christmas this year, we want to buy helpful things for my ds to bring to college. We bought a mini TARDIS frig and are looking at coffee machines but are wondering what other things we could get or have grandparents get that are helpful or useful for life in a dorm?
  18. My ds is taking AoPS Calculus which is really hard but I think it might be the first time my ds has struggled in math, so I am really happy that he is enjoying it and really having to knuckle down and work. We love Homeschool Spanish Academy and ds is in his 4th year and is looking to take AP Spanish at the end of the year. MIT's online Physics course is self guided so we have had to set up a schedule but he is being challenged but he really enjoys how the Professor teaches.
  19. My DS passed the Physics Subject Test after one year but it wasn't a spectacular score. He said he felt much more confident this weekend after having taken it a 2nd time and doing a more advanced Physics class for 4 months.
