  1. We've been doing the same thing, although my dh's throat got a little dry the first few times. :) Until 2-3 years ago, I didn't really buy into the idea that kids and/or their parents could know a child's sexual orientation at such a young age, but now I would be very surprised if my older ds was straight. If either ds is gay, I'd really like for him to feel comfortable enough to never have to hide it from our immediate family, and to let us help him deal with everyone else.
  2. We haven't started 3D yet (Ds is in a good rhythm with a few other things), but we're very, very happy with the BA we've used so far. I would say there's enough practice on each topic, but not enough actual math for a full year for a mathy kid. Ds had seen some of the topics before, but each of the books has taken far less than 9 weeks to complete, and it was not the only math he was doing. Because of the publication schedule, MM has become his main program, but we'll definitely be continuing with BA on the side.
  3. Hmm. 5 pairs of jeans 2 pairs of black pants 2 pairs of sweat pants 2 pairs of yoga pants Do snow pants count? Either way, I'm over 10.
  4. Ds6 has been saying he wants to be a physicist for at least a year now, but he's been tossing in "mathematical chemist" since we toured a lab a few weeks ago. I can definitely see him working in the hard sciences. Ds5 goes back and forth between a non-fiction writer ("I want write real stories about real people so that no one will forget that they really lived" ) and a doctor.
  5. He's pretty involved. Apart from letting me buy and talk about excessive amounts of curriculum and books, he does most of the read-alouds (they prefer his accent ), including LOF and SOTW. He also does extra math or art with them when they ask, and talks to them about things they're learning. He's more comfortable with afterschooling than homeschooling, but he doesn't let it show.
  6. I have one of those too, but mine really, really likes spelling. He's using Spelling Works right now, and in the fall we might use either Phonetic Zoo or some kind of spelling bee prep that I haven't looked into yet. However, if he didn't love spelling, I'd have no problem dropping it.
  7. Ds6 does about 1/3 of his school work independently. The rest is designed for mom to be involved (WWE, FLL, science, etc). He'd probably be weirded out if I sat next to him and stared at him while he did his spelling workbook, but maybe that's just us. :)
  8. We're only on WWE 2, so we haven't run into this issue yet, but I'm curious about how many weeks are actually a problem? Looking at the TOC for WWE 3, I only see a few weeks related to US history. Up until now, WWE has seemed incremental enough that skipping a few weeks entirely wouldn't hurt.
  9. I have one using BA now, and one who'll hopefully use it in about two years. He's doing MM and Miquon right now, and I plan to add in Singapore's Challenging Word Problems next year. Before starting BA, I want to have him finish MM 2, the first chapter of MM 3A, the first chapter of MM 3B and at least part of CWP 2.
  10. In our "spelling bee" today: Me: Recess. Ds6: R-h-e-s-u-s. Later, while skyping with my mother, in a mess of French and English: Ds5: I won the spelling bee today! Ds6: Mom cheated and used a proper noun, that's why you won. Me: Recess isn't a proper noun, it's a common noun, or it can be a verb. Ds6: No, it's the name of a TV show! Also, am I the only one who finds it adorable when their kids are trying out new vocab words? Ds6 has been using the words "cull" and "infiltrate" as often has humanly possible for the last few days and I can't help but smile when he talks about chocolate chips infiltrating cookie dough. :)
  11. We've only lived in our house for two months, but Dh and I agree that this is our forever house. The longest we've ever lived somewhere (a country, not just a house) was 13 months, so this was a big decision for us! It's perfect - 5 bedrooms, 4 bathrooms, a big driveway and lots of young neighbours. We're hoping to have two more kids, so it should fit us perfectly in 2-3 years. :)
  12. I don't pay attention to reading levels, and as far as I know, our school doesn't either.
  13. We just moved in December, and our new house is about 3800 sq ft. It's a little big right now (we lived in 1800 sq ft, 2500 sq ft and apartments previously), but we hope to have two more children, so it should be a good fit eventually.
  14. Math Mammoth and Miquon, then Math Mammoth and Beast Academy. My kids don't consider LOF to be school work. :)
  15. I've been buying gradually over the course of the year, so all I have left to order for next year is MCT, Beast Academy (as it comes out) and whatever we decide to use for Latin.
  16. Ds6 is doing FLL3 right now, and we might try MCT Island between 3 and 4, but we'll hit FLL4 at some point when he's 7.
  17. My kids have a pretty good sense of what my answer will be. They don't ask more than once or whine about it.
  18. When I run or when my boys carry our extra cell phone, we use a SPIbelt. It's sort of a sporty, not-quite-as-embarrassing fanny pack.
  19. I e-mailed about this a few months ago, but never received a response. It might be worth trying again?
  20. He's going to buy you a cat? American history is clearly not my strong suit. :D
  21. We're also very happy with Miquon. Life of Fred is fun too. :)
  22. This is exactly what we're doing. :) Ds5 is loving kindergarten and might stay in school for 1st grade, but I think we'll be homeschooling most of the way. We don't plan to alternate, although public high school is a possibility.
  23. We just moved from Texas a month ago, and I'm so glad that I don't have to deal with football! It doesn't exist here, except for one adult recreational flag football league. My boys do play hockey, and we'll deal with rugby when it comes up. I don't think the leagues start around here until about age 10.
