  1. HI Teachermom. My DD & I had one more question...we are second guessing ourselves about not registering for this class based on your feedback. It really looks like an amazing course but I just wanted to clarify one thing...(before we pulled the trigger and register). Thank you in advance for the help! Can you please ask your son, did they read the PRIMARY SOURCE BOOKS in their entirety or just excerpts from those books? Primary Sources: (Can be purchased, checked out from library, or read online) Boyle, Robert. The Sceptical Chymist (1661) Lavoisier, Antoine. Elements of Chemistry (1790) (Any English translation) I see the books are each covered for 3 weeks on the syllabus, so I am assuming they read the (entire or excerpts??) book and then have the quizzes on them, eventually writing the 2-3 page paper on them? Would that be a correct assumption? Please let us know and thanks again!
  2. Thank you teachermom2834! Appreciate the input and also hope someone else chimes in too. Unfortunately, the books did scare us from the class and we already changed directions for next year. Made plans to take a different science next year (Physical Science-basic review of Chem & Physics with another provider) and do Chemistry (hopefully) at local community college with live lab. However, DD is planning to take History & Philosophy of Western Science with WTMA next year instead, which also looks phenomenal.
  3. Thanks for the post and the information. I had been wondering the same thing about the class! It looks like an incredible class but I was concerned about the primary sources. Do they read the entire book or just excerpts and answer the questions & then write the paper.
  4. My DD took Honors Biology as a 7th grader. She is a liberal arts kid who happens to love science. She took Algebra 1 this year and did fine in Biology as a seventh grader. Good luck.
  5. Did anyone take the WTMA Chemistry course this year? Looking for some feedback on the course. This course looked so amazing to us and I was happy about the text, Conceptual Chemistry, but after reviewing the syllabus I got a little concerned about the "primary sources:" Primary Sources: (Can be purchased, checked out from library, or read online) Boyle, Robert. The Sceptical Chymist (1661) Lavoisier, Antoine. Elements of Chemistry (1790) (Any English translation) My dd loves science but will not be a science major and for a non-honors or AP course this reading material seems very advanced (and dare I say a bit long- the second source is 640 pages long according to Amazon). I have not read the material so I might be completely off on my observation. So, I am looking for any input. Can anyone share any info with me about the course? About the Primary Sources? Please feel free to PM if you do not want to post publicly. Any help is greatly appreciated! Here is the syllabus: https://docs.google.com/document/d/1WKeqPdE-2xVgg5a9o40C8DFVwxBHfkPoianJFqN_Psw/edit
  6. Hi. I also had decided on Blue Tent English 2 for Dd next year and would love to know what didn't work for you? Please feel free to PM me and thank you so much for the help! :)
  7. AS did I - no response. Must be busy...hoping she will eventually update her website with her plans....
  8. HI. I was looking at the Intro to Music Theory for the Fall. I noted that the Section 1 class time appears to be 11am but it doesn't indicate what day? Could you please let me know what day the class will be held? Thank you!
  9. Hi. Just wondering now that it is a few years later, what your impressions are/were of LiveOnlineMath with Mr. John Bovey? TIA
  10. I didn't see "Well Trained Mind Academy" on this list: http://www.wtmacademy.com They offer classes in Literature, Math, History, Science, Writing & Music/Fine Arts Cost: $499/ yr for those that meet 1x/week or $549/yr for those that meet 2x/week plus registration fee of $60...check website for semester class cost. Right now thru 3/31/15 they are offering discount for pre-registering of $75 (year course) and $30 (Semester course). Looks like they also have payment plan options. Have not taken any courses yet but have heard some amazing things about the Rhetoric courses. Just signed Dd up for Intro to Rhetoric today! Yay
  11. For those of you who used Cicero: History Beyond the Textbook, do you have any thoughts now that a few years have passed? Still struggling to find a history program for my daughter in 7th grade. Considering Cicero. Thank you!
  12. This is an amazing list & post. Thank you so much for all your hard work. Have helped me finally decide on History curriculum for DD (7th grade) this year! :)
  13. This is a wonderful, wonderful thread! Thank you so much to all who contributed! You have helped me immensely!
  14. I was also hoping to find out why the TPS Geography class didn't work out. I saw earlier posts from 2009/2010 (another forum within WTM) where parents/students seemed to love the class and then over the recent years I found more"negative" reviews on the Geography class. It appears that there was a change in instructor for the course? Could you PLEASE PM me to let me know why the class was terrible. I was just about to sign up my daughter and would really like to find out some more info before I proceed. That being said, anyone know of any good JH level Geography, History, & Civics online, interactive classes with teachers that meet at least 1x/week? Or have any input on the JH Geography class at TPS? PM is great too. :) Thanks so much.
