I Feel Badly About This. Mind-Blowing CC Update #49
Misha replied to Ginevra's topic in The Chat Board
I just asked DH how he would feel as the stranded motorist in this situation and he said he'd be more than okay with a woman not stopping because you never know. As a woman with children, I wouldn't stop and I wouldn't feel guilty about driving past. I might call 911 or highway patrol or something, but I wouldn't stop. -
Homeschool puberty vs ps puberty - is there a difference?
Misha replied to Misha's topic in The Chat Board
I was an only child, so I feel a bit overwhelmed with two children going through puberty at once. Puberty for me was hellacious - I'm just thinking of that and cowering in fear at the prospect. -
If you have struggled with anxiety, what are the top 3 things....
Misha replied to LarlaB's topic in The Chat Board
Yoga, magnesium, and a vegan diet. -
Both of my girls have started puberty and I'm wondering if there is a difference. I imagine there might be since peer influence is likely to be different in both situations, but I'm new at this, so I don't know. editing to add - difference in attitude, not age of onset

It's so hot here it was over 114 degrees and even with the central air set to 72 and the fans on, it's still almost 85 degrees in the house. I want to move again!

If you were going to majorly clean up your diet over summer vacation...
Misha replied to helena's topic in The Chat Board
I'm vegan and gluten-free. I have a lot of dietary issues, so I don't eat processed food (including sugar). If I was going to clean up my diet majorly, I'd probably go 100% raw. Starting a new way of eating can be really exciting, not the "Ugh, why am I doing this??" that a lot of people think of it. It's a process, certainly, but one that can be enjoyable. -
Please forgive me - I know there have been threads on this but I can't seem to find any of them after numerous searches. I'd like to earn some extra income - to lighten the load on my DH, to have a little extra, to just earn money again since I haven't had a "real" job for so long now. What do people do to earn extra money? I make a lot of stuff, mostly organic skin care products, but I don't know how to market myself and I wonder if it would cost less to set up selling established products as opposed to my own. I'm an introvert and can be very uncomfortable socially so I'd like to do something online that doesn't involve "parties" or selling to friends.

I have to disagree with this. I knew a lot of strippers and go go dancers during college and none of them were under the influence. I think, like anything else, it depends on the person. There are plenty of white collar professionals who are under the influence during business hours too.

Our favorite place to get eye exams and glasses is Costco. We don't have vision insurance so we tried going the cheaper route and ordered from Zenni - that was a mistake of epic proportion. With Medicaid as a primary or secondary insurance, would you need to pay anything for rx glasses other than, possibly, a co-pay?

Let's compile a "must watch" list of rom-com movies ...
Misha replied to Ann.without.an.e's topic in The Chat Board
Truly, Madly, Deeply (there is nothing better than Alan Rickman, unless it's more of Alan Rickman) Pride & Prejudice (this is my 11 year old's top pick - she loves the 2005 movie) While You Were Sleeping -

5th grade help please - WWYD? Low-budget ideas please
Misha replied to frugalmamatx's topic in K-8 Curriculum Board
If you have a kindle or the app for your phone/tablet/pc you can download books from your library as well. We do that all the time. I only wind up going to the library if I've ordered something that isn't available on kindle or to renew my card. :001_smile: -
Maybe write about it on a yelp review also, and hope that it helps the Y change their ways?
-
We really like "The Care and Keeping of You" also.

Toy ideas, like creating toys, or buying mass-produced toys? We do love projects here.

We school all year round, but I wanted to add some extra activities during the hot months when we can't regularly go out.

I broke my pelvis and had some internal damage after getting hit by a car right when I graduated high school. That led to issues and I was told I'd likely never be able to get pregnant and if I did, that I probably wouldn't be able to carry to term. I had three and went into early labor with all of them and was put on medication and bed rest. I didn't "do" pregnancy well. After my youngest was born I had a tubal. It was the healthiest option for me.

We don't actually have any lanes for Kids Bowl Free close enough to us to be practical, unfortunately.

They are 10 and 11 and enjoy science, reading, building stuff, Legos, and LED and electronics projects with Daddy. My 10 year old loves fashion design, cooking, writing fiction, and math. My 11 year old loves creating art, crocheting, reading, and "Pride and Prejudice" (the book and the 2006 movie).

We live in the desert, it's been in the 100's all week. Today it's 106 and it's only noon. My husband is Nordic and my daughters take after him; they're extremely fair. I don't like to take them out often during the day during these hot weather months, for fear of dehydration and sun stroke. I'm trying to plan out the next 17 weeks and fill them with a lot of fun activities that can be done at home. So far, I've come up with an indoor kitchen garden, building a solar oven, a monthly Tinkercrate subscription, writing letters, art journaling, going to the Philharmonic, museum days, and movie days. I'd like them to have something to look forward to each week and at this point, I'm trying to think of less expensive options. Any suggestions? TIA!

I would ask myself if I would stay in the relationship if the person were someone I was not related to. My first husband was emotionally and verbally abusive - that was almost 20 years ago, at this point in my life, I don't allow anyone to treat me with anything less than respect. I understand that detaching from a parent can be wrenching, but another question to ask yourself is this - is this a relationship dynamic you want to model for your children?

Math that really teaches mathematical reasoning??
Misha replied to Misha's topic in K-8 Curriculum Board
She tenses and gets stressed with "big" problems, such as larger digit multiplication and even multiple number addition and subtraction. She gets so tense that I gave them a few days off to regroup and today she said "I'm so nervous because it's a Monday and I feel like we should be doing math." I so want her to enjoy learning or, if that's not always possible, I'd like it to not be as stressful as it is for her. Neither DH or I are mathy - I'm not sure where our youngest gets it from, she's able to do mental maths in flash and answer most questions that I would need to take time to write down the question and figure it out. She loves math and it's her favorite thing to do each day. And that could very well be another reason for our elder DD's math stress, couldn't it? I think we will stick with CLE and heavily supplement for now. It's difficult for me, being so unmathematically inclined. I'll have to look for videos and whatnot that explain the concepts of things better. I just ordered "How to Tutor" and a Singapore word problems book. We have "Family Math" and "Math Wizardry" along with a bunch of 'Murderous Maths' titles too. Hopefully those will help as well. -
Math that really teaches mathematical reasoning??
Misha replied to Misha's topic in K-8 Curriculum Board
I've been explaining what the days lesson will consist of and sitting with them while they do their work to answer any questions, but I try not to otherwise offer help. -
We have a math saga, not story (we've tried TT, MM, MuS, and Saxon). Long story short, we started using CLE math and both girls were doing well. My youngest is still doing really well, but my eldest (age 11) is not getting the concepts. She can do the questions in the CLE books but she can't apply the math outside of the books. Can anyone suggest math, other than those listed above, that truly teaches reasoning and helps provide an understanding of the concepts? I've been looking longingly at Strayor-Upton and wondering if that meet our needs, but I just don't know. TIA.

To me a vulture would be someone who picks away at you until there's nothing left for them.
