  1. Narration: Have her read a simple book to him and then have him narrate it back to her, practice this and it will improve comprehension. 2. This will my 3rd time for 9th grade. Our oldest has graduated from college and is teaching 3rd grade in a public school. Our 2nd oldest is attend a community college right now. My nineth grader does ballet and is on point. She likes to write stories in her spare time. She volunteers at the library in the summer. During the school year she assists in a 4/5 year class at ballet. This year she will be doing IEW Windows to the World, and Elegant Essay, Biology, Algebra 1, Logic, Spanish, and the book of John with Community Bible Study. My only problem is where we do geography, or start a 4 year cycle of history. Plus add to this mix a 7th grade boy who is all boy. Needless to say our life is busy.
  3. Amazing Grace: William Wilberforce and the Heroic Campaign to End Slavery: Eric Metaxas Bonhoffer:Pastor, Martyr, Prophet, Spy Eric Metaxas Anne Bradstreet Poetry Hymns of Fanny Crosby
  4. Go to the IEW to get a syllabus. http://www.excellenceinwriting.com/files/TCS_Lesson_Plans.pdf This will help you a little.
  5. I think she used this: http://www.excellenceinwriting.com/tcs Teaching the Classics by Adam Andrews give you an overview of how to analize literature. Another one is Windows to the World: http://www.excellenceinwriting.com/wtw-t This one is more hands on work. It has you actually read the literature and then teaches the student how to write about it.
  6. Another alternative would be to join some type of debate/speech group, that way he would learn the debate skills, research skills, and presentation skills. That the doctor would have to use.
  7. Which course for logic would you use for a nineth grader?
  8. Cornerstone Cooperative is in Alabaster. It is does not cost as much as Southern Art Works. Excelsior is a advanced academic college prep co-op. Also, Evangel down in Alabaster is another alternative.
  9. Think of the points you want to study in regard to worldview. Then start with the Bible and list what the Bible says about those topics. Then pick a worldview and research that worldview and see where it stands on the same issues. Then have a conference with your student, also include dad, discuss how that worldview stands up against the Bible. You might want to have your student back up what he says, and explain why he believes that. Look at the results of the ideals of some of the worldviews, how do they treat the least of these, how does it treat women, etc. http://www.summit.org/resources/worldview-chart/ Also, you might want your students to work through a Logic course. That will help them with recognize false logic.
  10. It is similiar to IEW in that it has you take a key word outline and define vocabulary and then rewrite the story. It does not have the structure requirements that IEW for sentence variation. It does not cover the different styles of writing (ie writing from pictures, creative writing, research papers, etc.)
  11. If your funds are tight you might want to purchase the "Structure & Style Overview DVD' for $10.00. Also, purchase "All Things Fun and Fascinating" This option will not have Mr. Pudewa teaching, but you will be the teacher. Then if it works out, next school year go with SWI B.
  12. On the back of the cards, it has a list of resources to get more information about the topic. You do not have to use all the resources or buy all of them. Just pick a couple to go with the card. Utilize the library for those resources that are only needed for a few cards.
  13. Thanks for the help. I quess the goal of socratic discussions is to teach the student how to think and how to back up what he is saying.
  14. How do you conduct a Socratic discussion? Also, what is a good book to teach you how to do them? Thanks
  15. The program is research based in a way. The students read in a book, do research on the topic. They learn the information to be able to discuss it, then they have to write a paper on their research. I was not to impressed with the DVD program. The program uses a type of socratic discussions in class for the history portion. The next class they work on the writing of the paper. There is also a section on critical thinking in history. The books from Critical Thinking seem to go deeper in the critical thinking for history.
