Ladies and Gents, it is over! The reach school is in. My daughter is going to Cornell University, Class of 2020.

Thank you all for the laughter, the understanding, the kick-in-the butt when I wanted to take the easy way. You all stood with me today when she got the decision, just as you had when I thought she would never finish learning her time tables. Thank you is just so inadequate---- so I bow deeply to all of you, past members and present.

Remember, always remember, enjoy the ride.

    Yeah!!!  Congratulations to her!

My son just got his official admission early decision to the Wharton School at the University of Pennsylvania!  He will be rowing there.  He got a near-full scholarship.

  2. My son did his AP calc and tested in to Calc 2 at his engineering school.  So, we obviously love his classes!  And, my kids spend about an hour a day on his courses.  Sometimes a bit more, sometimes a bit less.  And, if you ever have a question for him, video message him!  He'll send you a video back with a response.

  3. Hey Jennifer! It is my understanding that the NCAA will not tell you anything. I know that the only task left on dd1's checklist is final transcript/core course worksheets. Nothing will be reviewed unless a coach requests it. And then, it can only be preliminary (the coach may or may not be informed). Right now, they are still clearing athletes for the 2015-2016 year.

I am sure she has been requested to be reviewed; yesterday was a good day for $$ news.

This seems so crazy to me! If my son needs to add something basic to his schooling that we somehow missed, I'd like to know sooner rather than later! My son has had a "pre-read" done on his application materials at a number of schools, but I don't believe any of them have contacted the NCAA for that information yet. I just want to make sure I haven't messed this up for him!

  4. Is the ACT easier than the SAT? My son wants to take the ACT because he feels like its easier than the SAT. He took the SAT in the spring.

I'm not sure if it's easier or not.  Ds's ACT score was higher, percentage-wise, than the SAT on his first attempt.  But, it could have been because the SAT was the first test he took and didn't know what to expect.

  5. I have one graduating next year. She is the swimmer, so core course worksheets and NCAA stuff was mailed about 2 weeks ago. Admission transcripts and course descriptions are current. She has been fielding calls non-stop since yesterday morning. She is not a superstar academic kid, so her schedule for next year is pretty normal (physics, English, history, calc 1, and an art elective) except for Japanese 3 and 4 at the cc.

ACT taken twice. She improved enough. She is done with that.

Right now, she has to narrow the list for official visits.

We are in the same boat! My son is a rower and is just narrowing down his official visit list. Have you heard from the NCAA? I need to call and find out if his courses are considered acceptable. What a nightmare filling all of those out was!

My son took the ACT, SAT (twice), and two subject tests and did very well. He's working on his college essays this summer so he won't have to do that and schoolwork. This is getting exciting!

  6. We fly Delta mostly.  We take the same precautions as mentioned above.  And, when we tell them, they don't serve peanuts on our flight.  They are pretty great about it.  We didn't fly for years because we weren't sure if his allergy was airborne or not.  Now, we've flown a number of times and I'm confident his is only if he ingests peanuts.

  7. You all are just plain wrong about Trader Joes!!!!  Blasphemy!  :)

I really don't like McDonald's, Burger King, or any of those fast food burger joints.  I don't remember the last time I ate at one.  (But, I do remember my first pregnancy CRAVING a Whopper at Burger King.  Weird!!)

  8. My son rows for a club so there are no requirements about school. They have people from all the local schools on the team. And there are a couple homeschooled kids too! Club teams tend to be more competitive than school teams. (Not always the case, but usually true).

In Michigan. They cannot participate in school sports unless they are at the school at least half days. So this was a sport we could do and homeschool.

  9. Hikin mama!!! Where does your son go to college? And where did he row in high school? I ask because my son is going into his senior year and he's a rower. He's being recruited by a number of colleges and very excited about rowing in college! He currently rows for the Detroit Boat Club. Oh and all the rowers hate UW!!! My son and his teammates watched a lot of the races at Henley a couple weeks ago and always rooted against them! Lol

To the OP. It is an amazing sport. So much fun to watch. My son cuttently works out three times a day- twice on the water with his teammates and he throws in another at home just for fun. Usually running or cycling. He mixes it up. It is an expensive sport and for us has involved a lot of travel. In fact, andrew is leaving right now for Club Nationals in Cincinnati! This sport has been the perfect fit for him!

  10. Skimmed everything.  But, take a look at Kettering University.  It's a coop school.  So you go to school for three months (semester) and then work full time for three months.  On and off.  My son is a freshman there and is in chemical engineering.  His coop really had him working as a chemical engineer and even sent him on a business trip!  He earns enough to pay for school by himself (with a little loan and a lot of merit money).

He will graduate with 2.5 years experience in the field.  And, it's a great school.

  11. I've done both and our family actually prefers the cruise vacations.  They are just so much more relaxing!  And, they love seeing other parts of the world and being adventurous at the ports, but being able to get back on the ship for nice meals.

We've been on three cruise lines - Disney, Royal Caribbean, and Norwegian.  Disney is ALL of our favorite (my kids are 18, 17, 14, and 9).  The quality of service you receive is second to none.  You have the same waiters every night, so you really get to know them and their families.  The kids' clubs are fantastic.  Character meets have WAY less time in line than at the parks - especially on the smaller ships (Magic and Wonder).  Entertainment is wonderful.  Everything from the shows to entertainment at dinner.  They know how to keep the kids happy during the long dinners.

The other cruise lines were fine.  We had a great time on them.  They just didn't have the same customer service as Disney.  And, I felt a little nickel and dimed.  Pool towels had to be checked out and you were fined $25 if you misplaced yours.  (Disney doesn't do that)  The other lines had WAY more options for paid food.  I felt cheap asking if there was an upcharge for the first couple of days until I figured out what was included and what wasn't.  (Disney has one or two upcharge restaurants, depending on which ship you are on.)  And, in general, they anticipated our needs better.

That said, you pay a lot more for Disney.  But each time we did the other lines, we wish we were back on a Disney ship.

  12. When you tried the melatonin, did you try the time release version?  That type tends to help people STAY asleep while the regular version just helps them fall asleep.

Would the doctor consider a sleep study to see if they could figure out what was going on?

My one that was just like him, at least DID sleep.  I think if she would not have slept we would not have been able to keep her (she was foster and later adopted). She was extremely active......so much so that the neuropsychologist that tested her right near her 3rd birthday came out of the room after an hour of 1:1 in a toy room and said "I am exhausted"........YEP, no wonder I was tired too.

I hate to suggest this as it certainly isn't a first line of defense, but for some kids with ADHD meds for ADHD actually help them sleep.  It helps quiet their minds so they can sleep.  There are other options as well.

I know it is very controversial to suggest meds, esp. at only 2 1/2 years old...........BUT I say over and over again, if we had known then what we know now, I would have started meds for my dd at 18 months old.  Seriously, I think it would have helped her moods, focus, speech, etc.  We did have a good team though and a peds psychiatrist working with us that was the best around for toddlers.

My mother was losing her mind with my brother.  He slept like OP's son.  And, was just as active.  The pediatrician then (this was early 1970s) didn't believe my mother.  So, my mom went in to the office with my dad and my brother and my dad demanded he help.  Something was up.  He was diagnosed with ADHD son after and put on meds.  It helped.

((hugs)) as you figure this out.

My brother still needs next to no sleep as a 42 year old adult!!

  13. I'm so sorry about the injury!!!  What a huge disappointment.  I'm glad to read that she can coach though!

Runningmom80 - my daughter has that problem.  She usually wears a leo that's a little big with gym shorts - the really tight ones.  Works well.

After Meg had a very successful year last year, she's moved up an age group and a level.  She struggles with vault so much!  So, she isn't placing as well in all around competitions this year.  Poor kid.  She's still motivated and loves it though!  Her first meet she got first on beam and 3rd all around (in the 8 and under division).  Her second meet (yesterday - in the 9 and under division - even though she's still only 8!), she got 3rd on beam and 8th all around.  (What is it with kids getting 9.8 and 9.9s at the beginning of the season???  Holy cow!!!)

  14. My son had it this year.  He's away at college and was absolutely exhausted and kept going to the doctor.  He had strep throat three times and they never thought to test for mono.  He came home and I took him to the doc here and he was diagnosed.  He has had a VERY rough time.  After strep, he got bronchitis and then flu.  He has been sick on and off for five months.  I believe that if he'd been diagnosed right away, he may have actually taken the time to heal instead of pushing himself through classes.  ::(

  15. I've been thinking about you a lot lately.  My ds has been having these weird panic attacks/muscle twitches.  I saw it happening to him last week.  He was able to talk through it, but his muscles were contracting suddenly and oddly.  This happens to him when he gets sick - even just a cold.  And, he has Aspergers.  Who would you recommend we see first?  His pediatrician?  Or a neurologist?

  16. Anna Maria Island is a wonderful place if you have a couple days.  Very off the beaten path.  Wide open beaches on the Gulf side.  Lovely.

Clearwater Beach is amazing too.  Be sure to visit the Clearwater Aquarium after watching Dolphin Tale 1 and 2!  You can meet the dolphins.

We had a wonderful time at Disney's Vero Beach resort.  The beach was nearly empty and we were there when the turtles hatched.  Wonderful pool and resort.

We spent a day in St Augustine once and easily could have spent more time there.  Gorgeous!

Key West is gorgeous, but not very family friendly.  We were there for a day on a cruise once.  That was enough!

And, if you have any Disney questions, this is the place to ask!!!!

We leave tomorrow for Ft. Lauderdale and Miami!!!!  (And a cruise!)
