  1. I think there is still a misunderstanding somewhere. I'm not suggesting children should be allowed to carry guns for self defense if they've received sufficient training. Are you saying you think a LE would go onto hunting land during hunting season and shoot a black kid with a rifle because that would seem threatening to the LE?
  2. In that case I don't understand the reference to Tamir Rice. How could anyone think that hunting, regardless of the race?
  3. I think you misunderstood what I was saying. Let me try to explain better. I'm not saying children should be able to carry rifles in residential neighborhoods (that would not be for hunting) but rather that it you're not out hunting during hunting season in a place you're allowed to hunt, you are carrying a gun (regardless of the barrel length) for self defense. That means you need a boatload of training regardless of whether you are twenty or forty. Haha, some how my tablet changed "training regardless" to frankincense
  4. I was talking specifically about carrying a gun for the purpose of self defense. And I don't think any gun should ever be left open/accessible. The point was that training is a lot more important than age of you are going to carry a gun for self defense. A forty year old with the minimum two hour class who doesn't practice is going to be shot of disarmed before he remembers how to take the safety off. A 20 year old who practices frequently and runs through multiple mental scenarios is going to maintain control of the gun, only shoot when they can't retreat, and be way less likely to hit an innocent bystander. Generally speaking, I'd like to see way more training required for guns that aren't kept for hunting. I'm fine with age limits, but age limits without more training isn't going to be super helpful.
  5. @Sneezyone I don't generally want to see a bunch of kids running around with guns, but Rosenbaum had pledged to kill any of them if he got them alone. Rittenhouse got separated from his group when he went to help someone and the police forced the group to move. Maybe someone more mature wouldn't have allowed themself to get separated. He clearly has had a lot of training though. You can see it especially with Grosskreutz, who was much older but had no idea how to properly handle a gun.
  6. Yes, and I'll add that city kids often lack access to mentors who teach them how to handle the gun safely. Money matters too. It costs a few hundred dollars to store guns and ammo in a way that is truly safe. Also, if you don't live rural, target ammo and a lane at the gun range can add up.
  7. What does he think of self defense rounds? Because I think that's another sensible thing that would make using guns for self defense safer without violating anyone's ability to defend themselves, hunt, or form a militia if we're invaded. Just keep self defense rounds in pistols. Easy.
  8. I agree, the context should be what matters. That's another thing your probably get both sides to agree on. I don't think most republicans want 16 year olds to take their rifles to the grocery store. I know different states are different, but here my ds12 is allowed to hunt with a rifle if he is within arms length of a mentor. It would be totally illegal for him to have unsupervised control of it.
  9. Using a gun for self defense requires way more skill and higher order thinking. When you are hunting deer or turkey you are aiming at something that isn't going to kill you regardless of whether you want too long or aim just right. A lot of states have step-up style driving lisences. At 16 you can drive, but not with other minors who might distract you. At 17 you can drive with other minors but only during daylight. It's kind of like that. As lower level functioning becomes more automatic you can devote more brain power to the next step. I'm just trying to explain the reasoning for the barrel difference. I'm not saying Rittenhouse should have been walking around with an AR15, because I don't think he should have. This is one place I think the majority of Americans both left and right could agree. Assault style rifles need a separate category with a higher age.
  10. People hunt with rifles mostly or shotguns for birds. I have never heard of anyone hunting with a pistol, but I suppose it could be done. Farmers need to protect their livestock and crops, so those kids learn pretty young.
  11. Well, to update: aunt's mom is still alive but unresponsive. there was no room at the hospital so they sent hospice to her home to give pain relief. Aunt just tested positive too, which puts my cousins into quarantine. ODS was supposed to go hunting with them this weekend. I said no when I found out about exposure and none are testing. They are just assuming they are ok if they don't have symptoms. Ods is fully vaxxed, but the cabin is small and apparently the deer all have covid too. they are ticked and think I'm silly. Everyone is mad at each other and pointing fingers over whose fault the deaths are. We asked mil and step fil to test before coming, which made them realize what a difficult situation they were putting us in. They offered to reschedule instead, and just FaceTime for now. I guess it will just be my triple modernad parents coming.
  12. I would do it for both. I might prefer Pfizer over Moderna for male. Otoh, I know a late 30ish healthy female who got two pfizers, a Pfizer booster, and symptomatic covid a week later, yikes! So if no covid at all is the goal, maybe moderna is worth the slightly higher myocarditis risk.
  13. Well, idk for sure, but here is a recent pew survey. Scroll down to number seven. Those are things we could probably fix it it weren't for them trying to attach all sorts of other things to it. https://www.pewresearch.org/fact-tank/2021/09/13/key-facts-about-americans-and-guns/
  14. I agree. I would be a little uncomfortable crossing paths with someone open carrying an assault rifle in Walmart. Wisconsin only allows concealed carry with a permit though, and then there are duty-to-inform complications. I'd like to think we could make some sensible adjustments to the laws, but the far left and the far right are are always too caught up in their politics to look at the obvious middle road that would satisfy the majority of Americans. In other news, the friend who bought him the gun is being charged.
  15. @mommyoffive that's reassuring. I wonder if it will be the same for 5-11 or if the smaller dosage will cancel. I know I'm going to do dd's shot at 3 weeks but I keep going back and forth on ds. The case rate and positivity has me leaning toward 3 weeks, but I wish I could hold out for 8.
  16. I an SOOOOOOOO glad this is finally being officially acknowledged and used in implementation: "The National Advisory Committee on Immunization (NACI), however, is recommending that the spacing between doses be increased to at least eight weeks, as evidence has been growing that a longer interval generates a more robust immune response. The longer spacing might also help to decrease even further the risk of the rare side effect of myocarditis (inflammation of the heart muscle), NACI said."
  17. I think you're talking about the Boogaloo boys. I don't really follow them. The issue is that the media has made widespread reports trying to link the Kenosha Guard (not necessarily Boogaloo Boys) to white supremacy and then failed to correct themselves as more information came out. By linking Rittenhouse to a group he's not actually associated with they portray it as a white supremacist being let off the hook.
  18. Um, it's a fact that there was a car between them. Whether or not the mere presence of a gun is a provocation is what the jury will decide.
  19. In opening statements the prosecution said they would show he instigated it, but they failed to do so. They were counting on some thermal imaging drone footage that shows Rittenhouse approaching Rosenbaum and then running away. Other angles and higher resolutions show that there was a car between them so Rittenhouse couldn't see Rosenbaum until he was right there. At that point, Rittenhouse yelled, "friendly, friendly," but Rosenbaum still pursued him. The defense is saying Rosenbaum was hiding behind the car in wait for Rittenhouse. The only other way he could have provoked it is by simply having a gun. They are trying to go with that now, I guess. Is the mere presence of a gun a provokation? If so, it has huge ramifications for our open carry law and our self defense laws.
  20. It's not just that I don't like what you're saying. It's that what you're saying is objectively wrong and fuels the narrative of racially-motivated hatred, which is directly what led to this. It endangers my life and the lives of my loved ones. The Kenosha Guard business has been investigated. Prosecution has thoroughly looked through all kinds of electronics for any evidence that Rittenhouse even knew about them. They found none. They also found no evidence of anything related to white supremacy. Please stop spreading that.
  21. Everything @AnotherNewNamesaid. It's quite possible that Huber and Grosskreutz truly believed they were doing good, but Rittenhouse was on the ground, unable to retreat, when he shot them. Huber was trying to pull the gun away and Grosskreutz had advanced on him with a gun in hand. Defense only requires you believe you are in danger of great bodily harm, be it from a fist beating, a skateboard beating, or a gun, and I definitely would have believed I was in danger of great bodily harm in that situation. Eta: And seriously, the idea that he should drop his weapon while being pursued by an angry mob. Yeah, that sounds like a brilliant plan. If someone smashes in your door and screams, "get her ass" do you think they 're about to do your dishes? Maybe you should wait until you're unconscious to fight back. Good idea. I can't get over how hilarious that is.
  22. When the group posted on FB it said to gather at Petretti Park, far from where Kyle was, and the intent was clearly stated that they were going to be guarding the entrances to the subdivisions. The residents were expecting their f*ing homes to be set on fire with no support from police and fire departments. Do you understand that? The gas stations were ordered to shut the pumps off to limit the spread. Yeah, people locked and loaded. The whole fb thing is a total red herring. Both sides have agreed that Kyle had nothing to do with that group.
  23. Here is the compressed drone video in the Rittenhouse case. The guy following Rosenbaum is the reporter. The freakishly tall guy on the far right next to the girl with the backpack is the one who fired into the air right before Rittenhouse turned. No muzzle flash is seen on this video but other videos have confirmed it.
  24. He was trying to take Rittenhouses gun according to both Rittenhouse and the reporter who witnessed it. Another protester nearby (from a position that was behind Rosenbaum from Rittenhouses pov) fired a gun into the air right before Rittenhouse turned and Rosenbaum tried to grab the gun. There are plenty of videos of it that you can watch it you're interested.
  25. It was really misguided for KR to be there, but I'm going to be pretty upset if he is found guilty of murder, particularly Rosenbaum. I'm surprised though, that they don't have some lesser charges going. *deleted* The drone footage in question shows Rosenbaum chasing Rittenhouse. The part the prosecution is interested in is that right before being shot he lowered his head and was hit in a prone position.
