  1. I will be watching theis thread closely, since someone I know just gave me tons of e-books (still sorting and seeing what I got) in anticipation of a kindle this Christmas. My default book choices are usually romance and suspense. I'll be rereading Stephen Lawhead's Pendragon books soon and Christopher Paolini's Inheritance books (technically he may be YA). I love Lynn Kurland - anything by her really.
  2. Oh, yeah, I forgot that I am doing that :tongue_smilie:. I just read books willy-nilly with out contributing to the threads.
  3. If you have a digital copy of the book, can't many people read it at the same time? I know that when I finally put the kindle app on the computer, I can access any content that is on my daughter's kindle and when (or if) I get a kindle for Chistmas I will have 2-4 copies of anything we buy (2 kindles, the pc and the laptop). Maybe you should just think of it as buying 2 or more copies of each book for that $8-10. You can even find a LOT of e-books for free or cheap.
  4. What are some enjoyable books that you have read? Looking for stuff that will make me smile. :bigear:
  5. thank you (I do use windows explorer to access the files on it)
  6. I have a WD passport hard drive that I am trying to clean-up adn organize. I only use it for storage of media (audio books, kindle books, pictures, etc.). We use carbonite to back up our computer. Do I have to keep any of the stuff that is on the external hard drive or can I just delete any files that aren't the media ones I want? Do these things have system-type files that they need to work properly? Thanks in advance for any help you can offer!
  7. have you tried any of the sports games? We have sports and Adventures and my 6 yo son loves them. Not sure about the balance thing.
  8. I like this response, it warns them (so to speak) that they already have similar items. I like this idea too. I think that the Kindle Fire is different enough that the kids would enjoy it, even with their other things. I think you should let them get cases and what not on their own. Your present does not need to revolve around that of others.
  9. Surely someone here has experience with these things. I can't talk to my dh too much about it or he won't be surprised?? :bigear:
  10. I vote better late than never, but I have some relatives who ask me not to send them at all.
  11. I told dh that I want to be able to plan on spending $200 (that he doesn't know about - for him, in other words) and he laughed at me. This means that I probably won't be able to do an actual system (which would be my preference). I could (maybe) do a sound bar and the player.
  12. My kids all love listening to Percy Jackson and 39 Clues. I will agree that the Harry Potter books are great to listen to even if you have read the books. My girls liked listening to American Girl books also. If your library has a download section, maybe see if they have anything that captures thier fancy. We found Doll People that way which was a hit.
  13. I'm looking at getting my dh a blue ray player for Christmas. The thing is, he really likes surround sound and when we replace the dvd player we loose the reciever (they are a 2 in one thing). The guy at Walmart was telling me that sound bars are pretty much the same as surround speakers. Does anyone have any experience with sound bars? Do they really work as well as little speakers do? We have an older TV (2004) would hooking one up to it be a problem? Thanks! :bigear:
  14. My kids all have state IDs we got at the DMV. They are good until they are 21 (even if my son's picture and singnature are from right before his 5th birthday). They cost a little less than a driver's license.
  15. Have you looked at the ones at Walmart or Michaels. My girls love for me to make them doll clothes - there are tons of patterns. I think Emily Rose is one I've heard of also.
  16. This happens in CO. Our church did this many years ago, first they met in a middle school (before my time there), then they rented space in a stri mall (that's when I started going) and now have a building.
  17. Ha, apparently I bully my poor d10 everyday simply by making her do school when she would much rather read or play. Good to know that she will have experienced the wonders of bullying...
  18. Is there a way you can gently suggest that what they really want are their lessons, and maybe they can make a really nice certificate or note for that and put it in a special keepsake box or with a something that goes with their hobbies of skating and riding. I have seen this work well with friends of ours. I totally get wanting to see someone open the gift you give them (I love that myself) but this way they are ALSO giving them something that they will LOVE and really WANT. :grouphug: Good luck
  19. All birthdays are holidays here. We often take the week of the birthday off. (easy since ds's bday is in February when we need a break anyway, dd is the week of 4th of July and mine is right around Memorial Day) We usually take off August and start the new year the week after my Labor Day baby's bday.
  20. When I make coffee (rarely - I don't drink it and only make it for others) I do 1 (heaping) tbs for 2 cups. THat is how my grandparents who drank it all day every day taught me to make it. Dh tells me it is good.
  21. My 10 yo dd will be getting Rick Riordan's Son of Neptune she loves his books and doesn't like trying new things and it only came out last month so she hasn't read it yet.
  22. I think that it happens more in the homeschooling community because we are with our kids all day and it is easy to take away an "extra" when a consequence is needed. A little bit of an excuse, but I do think the letter was excellent and sending it was a good idea.
  23. I've used Calibre and it works okay with more text heavy pdfs, not as well with ones with graphics
