  1. :bigear::lurk5::bigear: Another voice asking this question :001_smile: Do we have a timeframe yet?
  2. My dh is a carpet cleaner and he cleans rugs in the shop (from fires or floods or that people drop off) and he also cleans them in houses. I think it is probably a question of what is easiest. If you aren't in a huge hurry, I would think it best to drop them off and not have to have someone at your house doing it (but that may be my slightly anti-social tendancies coming out :tongue_smilie:)
  3. My oldest is 11 and starting 6th grade. we are hitting earth science for logic stage this year. I want to spend 1 week (about 2 days) covering the age of the earth. She will be getting the Old Earth point of view from our Main Text for science Eyewitness Earth. I am looking for something concise like that from the Young Earth perspective. I want her to read about both and compare and contrast them. I am looking for an article I can download or books that the library might possibly have. :bigear: Any suggestions? :bigear:
  4. Thanks for the encouragement :001_smile:! As for this - last year the samples (5 weeks) were available when we started in Mid-september and that gave us time until the pdfs came which we did until the book came out. I think that even though I like to be on track with a book a year, we'll take our break and then come at it in September and go slowly through the end and probably hit that big project before Christmas and aim for starting level 2 in January (after about the 1st third of the year).
  5. I lean towards doing this, however, one concern I have is that the book works its way up to spending the last 2 weeks on a big final project. I don't know that I want to do something that major so early, hopefully a month or so, into the new school year after spending 7 weeks out of school.
  6. So we are 2 weeks from finishing the school year and I am realizing that we won't get all through everything and I am trying to be okay with that :D (5th grade only for this - the 1st and 3rd grader should be able to finish everything). I think for grammar (Rod and Staff Follow the Plan) I will be fine with however far we get (we should be pretty close to on target) and just start at the beginning of the next book for 6th grade in September. We should hopefully get all but the last one or two summary lessons done for History Odyssey ancients. Writing With Skill is the one that is killing me. We are on our 3rd week of doing week 29. Which means we MAY get through week 30. This is good stuff that she really needs to learn, even if it requires her to work harder than she is used to having to work. (The hold up is - I think - more attitude related than ability related - She doesn't want to do it) So my question is: Should I finish up level 1 in the fall or just start level 2 with out completing level 1 (assuming level 2 will be out in some form come September).
  7. Another fan of sticky flags - this is also how I mark pages that I check at night that need to be corrected the next day. I put them at the top for place holders and on the sides fro corrections. When I run out and don't want to/can't get to the store to get more, I cut up sticky notes (its rare to run out of both at the same time:D)
  8. Thanks for the encouragement:001_smile: The working alone is often her preference (I'd rather have her get the work done, then have a big fight to make her do it with me). We aren't doing the tests this year, but my plan for the rest of 5th grade (and probably next year as well) is that I will let her chose working with me or doing it on her own, but she has to fix any she gets wrong on review lessons (I typically just go over mistakes with her on regular lessons). Since she doesn't like doing corrections, I am hoping this will encourage her to pay closer attention to the directions (her biggest problem right now).
  9. When she is doing the work on her own - I usually have her do only about half of each set of exercises, and if she has trouble with them the other half (which is often its own battle). She prefers working on her own to going over it with me (probably because I won't let her do it fast and sloppy and wrong). It is good to know (I guess) that some of it is just an age thing. We'll just keep plugging away at it :001_smile:.
  10. We are finishing up 5th grade with my oldest dd. She is 10 going on 11. We are using Rod and Staff Grammar (5th grade). We used First Language Lessons 1-4 and started Advanced Language Lessons and then switched to R&S when we realized ALL wouldn't be done. Last year, grammar was one of her best subjects, she rarely had a problem with diagramming, but this year . Her diagrams are almost always wrong, she doesn't want help, she doesn't follow the directions completely (for example it says, "write if the bolded word is an adverb or a preposition. If it is a preposition, write the object of the preposition." she will just follow the first part of the instructions and not write the object of the prepositions). She wants to work on her own, I like her to work on her own, R&S is well suited to her working on her own - BUT clearly something is not working this year. Any advice or suggestions?
  11. Thanks, now to figure out how to make that work on a kindle - I hadn't thought of looking for it digitally
  12. Does anyone know of a good book/version of Caesar's Gallic War by Olivia Coolidge to substitute this for? My dd10 is using History Odyssey level 2 Ancient Times and this is required, but I can't find it anywhere it is out of print. Since, I can't find it, I don't know what might be an accepteable substitution. She is suposed to start it next week, so any suggestions are greatly appreciated! :bigear:
  13. About how long does it take to get through an IP?
  14. We are using Singpore Primary Mathematics US Editions. My dd8 (3 rd grade) is just finishing book 3B, which she struggled with a little bit. When she finishes, we will still have 9-10 weeks left in our school year. I was planning on just going on to book 4A, but was wondering if it would be better to do the Intensive Practice book instead? And how do I pick which one? Would I go with 3b since that is the book we are just finishing? (the covers confuse me - saying for 3rd grade on the 2A and 2B books) Any help would be greatly appreciated :D :bigear:
  15. Has any one tried and liked Power-Glide language courses?
  16. I am thinking of adding Spanish instead of Latin for my oldest who will start 6th grade (11) next fall. She has spent the last 3 years working her way slowly through Getting Started With Latin. I told her I want her to finish that before moving on to something new. She is not real interested in languages, but it is something we think is important to learn. DH and I both took Spanish in high school, neither of us are Spanish speakers. Has anyone tried the third version of Rosetta stone? What has worked well for you or your student?
  17. Did you these to do science like is suggested in the WTM for the logic stage? How did you decide what needed to be covered,or did you go throught the whole book (geology - I know you said you aren't doing the whole book for oceanography)? My daughter is VERY interested in astronomy (the only science she actually likes), do you think the astronomy book would work for a complete 16-18 week semester, or would I need something additional?
  18. Thank you so much! I would hate to get the books (and the rest of my Rainbow order) and THEN realize that I needed them. Do you know about how long it takes to get through the first book? (so I can decide about getting just 1 or if I need to get 1 and 2.)
  19. Can anyone tell me about these Critical Thinking books? Rainbow has teacher's guides. Do you need the guide to teach the book?
  20. We are totally hit or miss with experiments around here. Other than the experiments/projects part, what did you think of the books?
  21. Has anyone used the books How the Universe Works and How the Earth Works that are recommended for the logic stage in the 2004 version of TWTM? Is it hard to plan and do science this way for 6th grade?
  22. I keep seeing this listed and I have no idea what it is - will you please enlighten the uninformed? I'm looking for something for 6th grade next year also (we did R.E.A.L. Science Earth and Space in 2nd grade and will probably be using it for the younger two for 2nd and 4th next year since I already have it.)
