  1. Ds has been using Chalkdust math throughout high school. This last year he completed Algebra 2. They offer both Trig and Pre-Calc. Should he do both, starting with Trig-or is just Pre-calc enough so he can do calc in 12th? Thanks! Hot Lava Mama
  2. Can you give more detail on what your daughter did for this? My ds will be in 11th next year, but will be doing a junior project. Sounds like something he would love. What kinds of stuff was involved with this? :) Hot Lava Mama
  3. Yep! That was a situation in which I had to take a deep breath and have a calm voice so that I didn't freak him out anymore. He suddenly lost confidence and he had to move quickly because his lane was ending and the two big rigs were closing him in pretty tight. He did it, but I was a bit shaky afterwards! :) I was wishing I had a giant, blinking sign that read "NEW DRIVER! PLEASE DON'T DO ANYTHING CRAZY AROUND HIM-LIKE BLOCKING HIM IN!" Hot Lava Mama
  4. I am just going through the permit process in CA with oldest DS. I am finding it easier to relax as he becomes more experienced. I assume it will be the same way when he drives solo. Although, my fear factor always ramps back up when we come to a new experience with him-like getting trapped between two big rigs! I find it very hard to let go, but, alas, we must. Hot Lava Mama
  5. 1. I don't open the door. I am under no obligation to open the door to someone simply because they ring my doorbell. 2. If I do open the door (perhaps they look innocent) and I don't want what they are selling, I become the "nanny," but I will be sure to pass their card onto the owners. :) Hot Lava Mama
  6. Thank you to everyone! I appreciate all the information! Hot Lava Mama
  7. I'm not as familiar with this test as the SAT. It appears that colleges will accept both. My understanding is that the ACT has science questions that the SAT doesn't. What is the case with the testing as far as reporting to the colleges. For example, ds will do SAT when he is ready in the 12th grade so that he doesn't have a lot of lower scores when he is "practicing" in younger years. (I do understand that some colleges "super score", while others make you report all scores and will see lower "practice runs.")Can he take the ACT (say in 10th grade) and NOT have the scores reported if he does poorly? What is the general suggestion with this test? Take it a lot for practice or wait until you are closer to the time when you need it and try? Thanks! Hot Lava Mama
  8. Could be. Ds had Ms. Richardson and he did not do the workshop posts. Hot Lava Mama
  9. FWIW, My dd is in the Creative Writing class this year. They are doing the workshop posts in that class. It sounds like it is a bit different in that the student posts the creative writing assignment on BB, and then students have to provide a written comment on the writing (not orally). Each student must provide 5 comments (meaning comment on 5 students writing) that include both a positive and constructive criticism for the piece. I have mixed feelings about this part. I do like that I can see what level of writing her peers are doing and compare it to where she is at. I really dislike that students who can't spell, can't punctuate, and can't capitalize are making comments on my daughter's writing. I feel like it is a bit of "lazy teaching" in that I paid for a professional teacher to help improve her writing, not other 7th graders. Given that, it has helped make her feel more confident in her writing (given that she doesn't have the extensive spelling errors and grammatical errors as the other students). My preference, however, would not be this model. I would prefer to have the comments from only the teacher. I would not mind her reading the work aloud in class, but I do not like the part where the students will then evaluate her writing orally. Even with my reservations, she is signed up for the EW1 class next year, in spite of the fact that they have to do the critique model. Oh, my ds was in the Rhetoric 1 class and they do NOT do that at that level. Hot Lava Mama
  10. I can't seem to find the answer to this on the college board web site. I'm sure it is there, but my mind is mush at this point of the year! What is the case for both SAT subject and AP tests is ds does poorly on a test. Can he get rid of them? Will he know his score first, or does he need to decide before he gets his score? What if he takes these tests after 10th grade and doesn't know which college to send them to yet? Does he wait and send them when he is closer to making a decision in 12th grade? Thanks! Hot Lava Mama Oh, also, if you have a link to college board where it talks about this, I would greatly appreciate it if you could include it. :)
  11. When did they stop that? We use T-mobile. We just did a $10 increment (that gave us another year from that date) a few months ago. Maybe December or January?? Do you know when that policy went into effect? Bummer! Hot Lava Mama
  12. Thanks for that information. We do use the Stanford test. That is one of those "loose strings" (to quote the lovable Colombo) that I had not tied up yet. :)
  13. Wow! I did not know this! I always wondered about that because my kids would get scores higher than their grade level, but I didn't think they were necessarily working at that grade level. It all makes sense, now! :) Hot Lava Mama
  14. I am looking for something like an online multiple choice quiz to go with the chapters. It is a recommended book for AP, so I was hoping someone on this board had used it before. It does have a "MyHistoryLab" that goes with the book, but I have to subscribe to that to get the resources. Does anyone know of anything? :)
  15. I bought the book used. The "MyHistoryLab" costs money. Anything free? Thanks Hot Lava Mama
  16. My kids are not in that particular class, but they have been in two other classes with WTMA. We have had a very positive experience with WTMA. The teachers are awesome and course material is strong. Probably a very small class so the moms have not seen the post. Oh, I do think you can view one of their classes. Hot Lava Mama
  17. SWB has a new audio lecture on burn out. I just finished listening to it. It is VERY helpful. You might want to take a listen to it. She talks about how to identify what the cause of burn out is and how to figure out a resolution. Basically, you need to keep a log to figure out the cause...is it a particular kid, a particular subject, a particular time of day, etc. Then she gives you some tools on figuring out what would be the best solution for your family. Good luck. Hot Lava Mama
  18. Thanks everyone! :) Off to check out all the suggestions! Hot Lava Mama
  19. I would really like ds to do Memoria Press Logic course, but our funds are low. Are there any good logic classes that are free online? He has done the Art of Argument & Informal Fallacies, so we are looking for something a step up. Hot Lava Mama
  20. Thanks for this review. I think I read somewhere (here maybe?) that if he takes the "live" class, we can list it as AP, but if he takes the "recorded" class, we can't. Please let me know anything else you find or think about the class! :) Hot Lava Mama
  21. Reviews on this program? It was suggested as an AP course on a previous thread. Wanted to know if anyone has any experience with this course. How are the teachers? How about the assignments? Thanks Hot Lava Mama
  22. I would never give out my bank information. Ever. No exceptions.
