  1. We are beginning SOTW 1. I would like to incorporate Bible history. Anyone have suggestions as to what would go along with SOTW?

I'm a little nervous after reading some posts about SOTW. Specifically, the order. Many of you say you have rearranged the order to better follow along. I am using SOTW 1 for both my 7 and 9 year old (1st year homeschooling). Is it confusing? If I supplement with other history/bible material - will it along well with it?

    What works for you?

    Thanks,

    Emily

  2. You......Don't ......Drink..........Coffee??!!!

How on earth do you homeschool??

    My hat's off to you m'dear :tongue_smilie:

THAT was funny!!! I should admit I have a Starbucks next in my hand. I switch to half caff after 2pm, though. I have a Starbucks we can walk to from our home. Life is good!

I order coffee...grande bold with a small scoop of ice. I order my kids a "tall blended strawberry frappuccino split in 2 cups". It's like a special milk shake treat for them. Or the blended lemonade. Or, ice water. It's free.

I can't wait for the spiced apple cider in the fall. And the hot chocolate is a solid favorite...add a small scoop of ice if you want to drink it within an hour. They will do kids hot chocolate at a lower temp if you ask.

That's probably more than you wanted to know, but maybe you will find something in there you like. We always do!

  3. :iagree: This one seems to be recommended the most. We just started with it this week.

I'm looking at Typing Instructor for kids on amazon. There are several versions. Which one are you using? Do you know anything about the differences between them all?

  4. This is the first full year I am homeschooling my 10 yr old. We pulled her out of 4th grade last year in Feb. and just experimented with curriculum for the rest of the year to see what worked and what we liked.

Now I am reading up on classical education and it is appealing to me. I'd like to learn more. Is there somewhere online that explains the trivium really well? I do have The Well Trained Mind and Latin Centered Curriculum on order, but I'm a bit impatient :tongue_smilie:

Also, anyone have experience starting with the classical method this late in the game?

I had 2 in public school last year. Yesterday was my 1st day homeschoolig my 2 boys...a 7 year old and a 9 year old. So, you are not alone. I just read and reread the first part of Well Trained Mind. If I see something I am interested in...I search it on this message board. I read what people like, dislike, and what works and doesn't work. I've created my curriculum from that.

Ask anything. Everyone here is very helpful!

    Best of luck!

  5. Thanks everyone!!! I was almost in tears when I read what everyone wrote. I wanted to share with my dh, but he thinks I may spend too much time on this message board...and he may be right. But what a great place to spend time. The encouragement and support is greatly needed...not to mention the advice!

Thanks again! You guys are great!

  6. I did it. I am a homeschooler. Public school started today and my kids were home. We had a wonderful day. I'm starting slow. One new subject every week. Today we did math. We went to the pool with some other homeschoolers. We did some reading. They were relaxed. They didn't hesitate to sit down and get to work. I know it won't always be like this, but for DAY 1 it was! I have 2 boys...4th and 1st grade. They are asleep. I'm exhausted. I'm relieved. I'm really happy right now.

    I just wanted to share!

  7. I'm not ready. I haven't ordered anything. I do, however, have a list!

This is my 1st year homeshooling. I will say it can be intimidating to read what everyone else is doing. From menu spreadsheets, chore charts, personal websites with blogs and pics of kids...I am amazed at what some moms accomplish.

I'll get there. It will take some time. And since we aren't on the public school schedule anymore...I have that time!!!

    Let the journey begin!

  8. Well, we haven't tried some of those already mentioned, but my kids loved the one by Mary Pope Osborne. It is very accessible for younger kids. My 5 yo has, since hearing it, become passionate about Greek Mythology. Osborne's book is what started that, so I'd have to say for us it was a good introduction.

I just put a hold on this at my library. I am anxious to see it. Thanks for the suggestion!

  9. My son just turned 2 when he started to walk. He was my youngest. My older son walked at 10 months. Go figure. I was worried at the time. However, knowing him now (he is turning 7 in 2 weeks) that was just his personality. He was content sitting around watching everyone else move about. When he made up his mind he wanted to do it...he took off. Like I said, I was worried at the time, but he was just fine.

  10. I just gave you a couple. If you click on the 'User Control Panel' above it will tell you how many rep points you have. Members give rep points to each other by the way of the scales in the upper right of a post. It is typical to give a rep point to someone if they post something that you agree with or enjoy or in some cases if you just really want too.:D

    Thanks so much!!!

  11. When working a year ahead, for example Saxon 2 for a first grader, I

would not completely skip the meeting book. I'd still do it at least once or twice a week. :iagree: , there are valuable things in it. For us, doing it everyday was too much.

I admit I was considering skipping the meeting. Or, at the very least, doing the meeting together...instead of 1 meeting for ds 6 and 1 meeting for ds 9. So, I'm thinking of monday-wednesday-friday as days we start with the meeting all together. (Again, my need for a plan returns.) Any thoughts on that?

4 days of lessons, each 30-60 minutes (as suggested by WTM), and a day for review. Also, I was thinking math would be our first subject of the morning. Does Saxon goes well with coffee?

  12. Is there a significant advantage to using a handwriting program (HWT is what I was thinking of using) instead of the workbooks you can buy at the local bookstore? I'm trying to get started and I haven't ordered anything for ds 1st grade handwriting and ds 3rd grade cursive. Can I get away with something a little cheaper and a little easier to get my hands on...you know...cash and carry!

    Thanks,

    Emily

  13. I am starting SOTW 1 and going down the recommended book list exactly as suggested. The Odyssey...WTM suggest Geraldine McCaughrean's. My library doesn't carry this. Is there another version that is well liked and you kids enjoyed?

    Thanks,

    Emily

  14. This is a good point! My rising first grader is just finishing up Saxon 1 and will be moving into Saxon 2 soon. We were advised by a Saxon rep that Saxon K works for preschool ages, and so started it in pre-K and used Saxon 1 for K. I think many kids could easily go ahead in the early levels, so it might be worth pretesting your children and just starting at a higher level if indicated.

Based on many recommendations on this board, we are also adding in Singapore's Challenging Word Problems once a week.

Singapore Challenging Word Problems...please tell me more. Does the Singapore plan go along with Saxon? Is it just extra drill sheets that you use to supplement? Where do you get them? I know nothing about Singapore...can you tell?

  15. Thanks for sharing your experiences with me. I am thinking about doing 30 minutes of math a day. I had ds (9) in ps last year and we spent at least that much time doing just homework. I would assume we can get through a lesson in 30 minutes. He can then do the extra work on his own later in the day. Same goes with my ds (6).

I gather it is important to complete each lesson fully. Good to know. The extra practice proves helpful down the line. That's something I would not have considered. I will play it by ear, see how the boys deal with the time/lesson, and move on when they are ready.

I just feel this incredible need to have a "plan"...whatever it is.

Thanks again to everyone for sharing!

  16. I have Saxon math 1 for ds 6 and math 3 for ds 9. This is our first year using Saxon. As I was making our "schedule" and looking over the lessons...it seems fairly easy. I was wondering if anyone does more than 1 lesson a day. From the looks of it, we could do several lessons a day and be done by Christmas. I would then move into Saxon 2 and 4. I'm not in a hurry. I just don't want the kids to be bored and unchallenged.

Does anyone do more than 1 lesson a day? Could I just say we will spend a certain amount a day on math and see how far they get? What works for you?

    Thanks!

    Emily

  17. I know EXACTLY how you feel. I don't know everyone on these message boards (as I am a new homeschooler), but it seems everyone that knows you here really has a lot of respect and support and love to offer.

We made our decision to homeschool about 3 months ago. I KNOW it is the right thing for our 2 sons. So why does everyone else think they have the right to judge us? Why am I afraid to tell people what we are doing? I avoid conversation about it. ESPECIALLY with my own father. He questions my decision to pull them out of school, my ability to teach them, my own education, and is certain my kids will turn out "weird"...social outcasts is the word I think he was trying to say.

I have felt alone. I have felt like this was a crazy decision to make. I have been hurt by others. I am just glad to know I am not alone!

    Thanks for your post.
