  1. Thank you for the advice everyone! I think I am going to keep the phonics for another year at least. I'd rather be sure that he is getting enough, then not enough.
  2. Math Mammoth! I have a math obsessed son and he loves it. We plan on using it until 6th grade. We start off with Singapore for Kindergarten and then move on to Math Mammoth. The author of MM recommends Singapore for K too. I have 4 kids and it really helps to have a Math program that is not so teacher intensive. :)
  3. I'm fine with sticking with Horizons. I just didn't want to overkill it doing too many subjects if they were not needed. We will continue using All About Spelling. I love how it teaches spelling and not just memorization. We also do a lot of reading. I love classic books, and also have him read fun chapter books that interest him.
  4. So do you think doing a spelling, grammar, and writing program is enough? The horizons phonics just keeps going. So I don't know if it's okay to stop yet. I am one of those people who has to complete all of our curriculum and make sure we don't miss anything. So this is really stressing me out. Ugh.
  5. Last year for 1st, we used Horizons Phonics & Reading, Growing with Grammar, Winning with Writing, and All About Spelling. He is going into 2nd grade and can read chapter books. So I'm just not sure if he should move onto another English type program or stay with the Horizons Phonics & Reading. I also saw on here where most people do not like Horizons?? I haven't encountered a problem with it yet, and we actually enjoy it b/c it is a workbook, colorful, and fast paced. He is ADHD, so the colors and quickness helps I think. Also I have 3 younger children, so I would prefer a workbook style instead of something more teacher intensive. So when do you quit doing Phonics? What English curriculum's are you using or have used for 2nd grade? And does anyone have a favorite writing program (besides WWE)? Thanks in advance! Jennifer
  6. I used Elemental History to give a one year overview of our history before we dove into a 4 year world study. My son and I both loved it. Great stories, and activities. I plan on doing the 4 year study next and then using Notgrass America the Beautiful curriculum for another one year more in depth study of American History. :) Glad to hear that kids are not getting too bored with it. I am sure I can always supplement with books/movies if he does get bored. Thank you so much for the link! And yay for his favorite subject being history! Love it!
  7. Thanks so much for the link. That is the main reason I was leaning towards MOH. That included the bible.
  8. Thanks so much for the advice. I don't need the history program to schedule bible readings, I just want it to mention the bible and God. I don't want it excluded, like God doesn't exist. We do our own bible studies, so it doesn't need to be really in depth. I just would prefer God mentioned. I had never heard of History Odyssey. Does it include the bible? It looks interesting. I might do what you are doing, and use SOTW and History Odyssey together. History is my favorite subject. So I just want to make sure it is not boring for my kids. I want them to love History as much as I do.
  9. We finished our one year of American History this year, and I am ready to get started on our 4 year World History. I am trying to decide between Story of the World and Mystery of History. I see lots of people liking both programs, but I am wondering which one is better for a 2nd grader. I was thinking SOTW, but then I heard that SOTW is too boring for little ones. And I like that MOH weaves in the bible. But the cost is really high on MOH. So many pros and cons to each. I was wondering which one do you prefer, and which one do you think is better for a 2nd grader. All opinions appreciated! Thanks! ~Jennifer
  10. This is my 2nd year homeschooling. The first year I bought an all in one curriculum. This year I am branching out and getting a variety of subjects from different places. So my cost has went way up. Plus I am buying now for more then one kid. A 1st grader, prek'er, and tot school. For all my curriculum I am estimating $800. Then another $200 for supplies. I am trying to buy a lot of nonconsumables though so the next kids can use them. I am bad and didn't budget monthly though. I just planned to use the summer to buy everything. I didn't realize how much it was going to cost though! So this next coming year, starting Sep., I am going to budget $50 a paycheck. That will be $1300 for the year, but I want that to include curriculum, supplies, and field trips.
  11. Thank you. After looking at Math Mammoth I think that is what we are going to go with. Supplementing with Life of Fred for fun.
  12. I am looking into Math Mammoth too. I saw someone else posting about the HSBC sale. What is that???
  13. Or Math Mammoth?? Anyone prefer that program?
  14. I am trying to decide on a math curriculum for my soon to be 1st grader. He is doing amazing in math and flew right through his work this year. Even though he is in Kindergarten I ordered him the 1st grade A.C.E. curriculum b/c their K program seemed to immature. He is already adding/subtracting, writing/counting all his numbers, and is great at figuring problems in his head. Math is his favorite subject so I want to make sure I get a program he really enjoys and that will challenge him enough. Looking at the scope and sequence of both programs, he will have to do some review before he starts doing any new concepts. Seeing as he is already adding large numbers and they pretty much start at 1. Anyone use both programs??? Or Math Mammoth?? I was looking at it last night and it seems great. Which do you prefer?
