  1. Love, love this. And obviously agree with it 100%. :tongue_smilie:
  2. My kids are 15, and they both still call me Mommy. My dd has a boyfriend and he thinks it's so cute....whenever the band bus reaches its destination, she pulls out her phone to text me that they made it safely, and he always teases her: "Awwww, are you texting your mommy?" They'll still hold my hand in public, too, especially my son. He's extremely sweet and loving, and also, being on the Aspie scale, rather clueless to social norms. :D
  3. We do an Easter chair, which means the kids don't have baskets. I started the tradition of buying things they would get anyway in the spring, specifically pool toys and new goggles. I was never one to buy my kids toys and things for no reason, and with them both having fall/winter birthdays, Easter gave me a chance to get them things they needed. Now that they're older, I'll get them each a DVD, candy, and maybe a shirt or a pair of shorts. In retrospect, though, I do kind of wish I'd have kept it to candy/eggs only. The dollar store stuff no longer cuts it. We also color eggs and my dd likes to make special colored eggs for everyone. We go to church, then head to my mom's house where she has an egg hunt, and we feast.
  4. I think this is my problem right now, too. I don't think I'm eating enough on a regular basis. But I do eat until I'm full - it just doesn't take much! And nobody mention the wine, 'cause I ain't giving it up. :D
  5. I'm so, so sorry. What a horrible tragedy. :grouphug:
  6. I've tried intermittent fasting (I find it easy most of the time), but then somebody always brings up the "without food your body slows down its metabolism because it thinks it's starving" argument. My metabolism is slow already, and I have insulin resistance, which makes my body loathe to give up the weight (it's circular, because if the weight is reduced, it improves insulin resistance). Any thoughts?
  7. I remember the posts about it - I'm glad you've been able to stick with it and establish routines! Good for you. Now, I need to join you in that whole weight-loss thing. I feel like I'm plateauing right off the bat!
  8. I have high hopes for Francis, for reasons like this.
  9. Regarding the new season filming, you just made my dd's day. I thank you from the bottom of my heart, as two minutes ago she was crabby and pms-ing, and now she's dancing about the room with joy. Ahhh, puberty. :tongue_smilie:
  10. Wow, this is so offensive!! Because some parents believe in letting their kids grow up and take gradual and increasing responsibility for their lives, we are lazy??? When my kids were young, they were watched. As they grew, I played out the line a little bit at a time, more and more. They are now 15, and yes, they DO walk to school (together) in the mornings. I just can't see sending them off to college in 3 years when I won't even let them walk a mile. I'll vouch for you. :)
  11. Love this post. Aelwydd, you have a gift of critical, thoughtful thinking - an ability to discuss without denigrating others. I'm a cradle Catholic-turned non-denominational-turned Anglican, and I, too, feel a kinship with the RCC. As we say each Sunday in the Nicene creed, "I believe in one holy, catholic, and apostolic church."
  12. This kind of thinking, and citizen-policing, drives me crazy. At 12, my brother had a paper route. At 12, I frequently roamed the woods with just me and my dog. Yes, it was the 70s, but let's not pretend that was an idyllic time of safety. I agree with the OP....people have gone beyond reasonable fears. A 12yo can't be left alone in a car?? My dd was babysitting at 12 - so she can watch children and be responsible for their safety and well-being, but she can't sit in a car alone?? In Europe (Paris and London, specifically) I see kids all the time who are riding the metro to/from school by themselves. And in Hong Kong, we allowed my kids (9 at the time) to be quite independent. They regularly made trips to the grocery or tennis club without me or any other adult. I get that Europe and Asia are culturally different, but I wonder....is the US really as unsafe as people fear? I know my neighbors think I'm a liberal nut who allowed her children to walk to the park *alone* (well, they were together)....at the age of 8.....and the park is ONE block away. Seriously. I started leaving them alone at home a few years later. My kids now walk/skateboard to high school in the mornings, and most of the kids around our street are driven there. It's 1 mile, and it never snows and rarely rains. They can't walk 1 mile? FWIW, my neighborhood is pretty safe. Not upper class or gated or anything like that, but a nice, middle-class neighborhood. Still, things could happen. But my dd will be driving in one month, and both kids will be leaving home in 3 years. And they can't walk a mile or stay home alone or sit in a car?
  13. One of my friends was late coming out as well. He was married for several years. Interestingly, he didn't come out until his mom died. They were close and he feels she wouldn't have minded and would have accepted him, but he just couldn't do it. He has now been in a great relationship for 20 years.
  14. One of my gay friends always jokes that while all his older brothers and sisters were outside playing baseball together, he was in the house rearranging furniture and wearing a doily on his head. As a matter of fact, one day his mom sent a picture of him, and he had the doily on his head! Hilarious!! They all knew he was gay when he was in single digits.
  15. I agree. I'm praying for you, Julie, and I do hope that you get mad. Sometimes that propels us forward in a new direction with angry energy. You deserve a happy life - this mess isn't of your doing. :grouphug:
  16. Yes, this is me, too. By the time I get to {Target, Petsmart, most any store} I could have bought it on Amazon and had it shipped here in 1 or 2 days. Lazy! And I hate shopping, so this works for me.
  17. That's interesting. I'm a Mac person too, (and iPad, ipod, shuffle, time machine, etc), but my Android is superior. I have a Galaxy Note II, and it's fast, accurate, no glitches, and has amazing resolution. My dh is often at Apple corporate, and the higher-up people are always playing with his Note. For now, with that phone, Android easily out-performs the iPhone. We're hoping the next iPhone version catches up.
  18. Thank you!! Gum-chewing drives me crazy. I let my kids chew it, but my son (in particular) always ends up chewing it noisily and I make him throw it out. Gross! I've never enjoyed gum, but my dd absolutely loves it. She's not gross with it, though, so it makes a great stocking stuffer for her. :)
  19. I thought when my homeschooling days were over, Prime would be a waste of money. Wrong! I didn't realize how often I order items from Amazon that have nothing to do with homeschooling. Cat food (that my dog also eats), DVDs, Christmas presents, Easter presents, food (escargot in particular), music items, sports items, clothing....just today my dh had me order some type of liquid stuff for our motorcycle. It never ends!
  20. Yes! Or at least, that's my story and I'm sticking to it. :D
  21. OMG, dessert in a glass!! Lip-smacking good. Not that it necessarily takes the place of dessert, though. :D
  22. Just wait until they're older. Your donut days are coming!
  23. Or Legalism!! I'm hereby formally against Culinary Legalism. :D
  24. I don't have those, but I got a Galaxy Note II for Christmas, and I LOVE it! Yes it's big, but it's flat, very fast, and the resolution is amazing. Don't you hate it when someone answers it like this? :D
