  1. Three dollars a dozen! I paid .88 for 2 ears of corn the other day at Kroger.
  2. Soak the corn for thirty minutes in a bucket of water. Don't remove the husks. Soaking and leaving the husks on actually steams the corns while on the grill. Drain the corn, place on the grill, and cook for 30 minutes. Pull back the husks, smother in melted butter and salt, and enjoy!
  3. I believe you are correct about the missions contributions, but I don't think it is a very large amount. Not sure exactly what it is though. As far as following anything passed at the convention: Southern Baptist churches are autonomous. Each individual church is goverened by that particular local body of believers. The convention makes and passes resolutions, but the local church decides how far or how much they agree with. A church usually sends messengers each year to the convention that are chosen by the membership. In some small churches only the pastor and his wife will attend. And no, not all SB churches use the SS curriculum. We attend a large SB church and do not.
  4. I used Easy Grammar for one year and was very disappointed. I expected diagraming, but did not get it. So the next year we used Rod & Staff, and here I got all the diagramming I could ever want.
  5. I certainly understand your concern regarding youth groups. We are members of a very large church with a large youth group. I have always questioned whether or not to allow our children to participate. This year our son is going into 6th grade which means this is his first year in youth group. Dh and I have decided to allow him to participate, but to become involved ourselves working with the youth. This way we can know the other kids and their families and can stay on top of what's happening.
  6. Mine is a picture taken of me by my 11 yo son. He was having a hard time getting my whole head in.
  7. We used Rod & Staff for grammar and spelling. I love the thoroughness of this program.
  8. Our health instruction has come from books like: Prudence and the Millers, Wisdom and the Millers, and Proper Manners and Health Habits.
  9. I've never considered it might get on the fruits and veggies. Since we don't use any kind of insecticides ourselves I've always felt it relatively safe for the kids to pop a fresh picked blueberry into their mouths without washing. You've got me wondering now.
  10. I use all kinds of cookie sheets and stones - as long as there is parchment paper on it.
  11. I saw the first few minutes of the show then turned it. I'm sure a lot of what was shown was taken out of context in order to make the religious family out as the bad guys.
  12. This does look interesting. I read the first few pages and am amazed at the thoroughness of the instructions. Example: Do not allow children to sew without basting. Never sew without a thimble. Do not accept careless knots. My mil, who has taught me how to sew, would agree wholeheartedly with this! :D
  13. My daughter is begging to see it. I bet I know which AG doll she will want for Christmas this year! ;)
  14. We had fresh vegetables one evening: squash casserole, purple hull peas, sweet potatoes, cucumbers, tomatoes, and cornbread. Roast with carrots and potatoes. Baked chicken and veggies. Sometimes I'll make a huge pot of vegetable soup with the leftovers from the week and serve it with grilled cheese sandwiches.
  15. I love your wide rows! Ours never seem to be wide enough. About your turnip greens - how do you cook them? I like to add a tiny pinch of sugar. This helps take away any bitterness. I also add a beef boulion cube (or 2). It adds a lot of flavor without fat.
  16. Hello. My name is Jennifer, and I'm mom to 11 yo ds, 8 yo dd, and 4 yo dd. This will be our 7th year homeschooling. I use a variety of curriculum: Abeka, Rod & Staff, Math-U-See, Latina Christianity, Story of the World, and Sonlight (there's probably more I'm forgetting). I am a stay-at-home mom who loves to cook. I'm also a voracious reader. I like to sing and play the piano although I don't do it as much as I did before kids. I've joined these forums because I would like to make some new friends, and I want a safe place to chat about school and life in general. I've been lurking for a short while and I already recognize a few names from the Sonlight forums.
