  1. I have the downloaded files and so far have not had a problem.
  2. I have the same problem an dit is driving me nuts. I use Chrome as well.
  3. My son could not decide between Paul Foerster Algebra 1 and AoPS Intro to Algebra. For fear on missing out on something he is doing both.
  4. We are bilingual and are doing Russian as well. Reading, and writing. I bought books for that too. Yeah, that! For German I use German as a foreign language materials used in schools over there. Not the cheapest way to go but for us those books work best. They also attend the German Saturday school here so there are books for that as well.
  5. Both of us do all except Latin and Greek since my husband has never studied either and I never excelled in programming. He has an engineering degree, mine is in science, we both like the humanities.
  6. So far well over $1000. We pulled three of our children out of ps in March so I have nothing from previous years. They all have very different learning styles and are at different levels so teaching them together would be very hard. I still have a few hundred dollars worth on order but most items will be used for at least two children over a number of years so in the end the cost will even out. I also splurged on teacher manuals and solution keys as well as having a couple of different materials for each subject (i.e. AoPS Intro to Algebra and Paul Foerster Algebra1). I buy materials for them though as much as I buy them fir me :-)
  7. I have worked for several years with people who are very poor (think Native Americans on reservations). Underwear and socks are some of the most requested items on the "asked for items" list. Going pant or shirtless is not an option plus these items are frequently donated. Flip Flops often serve as shoes (winter and summer) but underwear and socks will have to be bought by the families so that is where they save. To see those items on a child's Christmas wish list as a priority was something it took me a long time to get used to.
  8. No, our children need to go where they want to/need to be. Between me immigrating to the US and my husband having been on active duty for over twenty years we haven't lived close to family for a long time.
  9. I also prefer Wheelock for the precise reasons mentioned in the previous post.
  10. We don't have Prime but yes, I used to get my orders much faster. My last one took about three weeks.
  11. ... you and me and Leslie, cruising on a Sunday afternoon... Oh well, to each their own I thought ...until my husband set the record straight and told me it was "endlessly" ;-)

  13. I loved the Famous Five when I was a kid (read them around the age of 8-12). Actually I just put my old books on my daughter's (just turned 9) shelf last week and so far she likes them too.
  14. Nope, I always joked I would have 3 boys and a girl in that order. Don't want to spoil my perfect record :-)))
  15. Not all European countries pay for coverage out of tax money. In Germany the premium is set as a percentage of wage (currently somewhere around 15.5%) and levied up to a certain amount of earned income (I think it is around 4200 Euros per month for 2012). This premium is then split roundabout 50/50 between the employer and the employee (employee pays a little more than the employer). If you make more than that, you do not have to be insured at all or opt for private insurance. I have never known anyone who did not have health insurance. Many people chose that route until they realized that private companies can raise their rates and drop services at any time and that made the public system look pretty good. Unemployed people have their premiums covered out of the unemployment insurance pot that every worker has to pay into so that if you lose your job, you do not lose your health insurance. The premium is taken right out of your paycheck so not paying is not an option.
  16. We have done exactly that this last March. The only thing we have kept up a little was math. We let them decompress and relax and now that it is July I can see a definite difference in our son (will be 6th grade). He is much more relaxed and ready to learn. Our daughter will be in 4th grade and spent the last 5 weeks in Germany with Grandma. Between language, culture and being away from us over an extended period of time I think she is doing enough.

  18. Yes, that helps a lot, thank you very much. I want to make sure that I pay people correctly and everyone receives what they are due. Diane
  19. Hello, I have a quick Paypal question but can't find the answer in the Help section or my brain isn't processing it. I just sent a payment for something I purchased. I selected "Goods", hit the "Continue" button and received a note that said that payment was made. I used to get a page where it asked me whether I wish to pay by credit card, direct transfer and such. This time no such thing. The receipt I got says a direct payment from my bank account was made but the recipient was charged fees which I thought were due only if payment was made with a credit card. What was I doing wrong? Do I need to select "personal" rather than purchase or do I have a flaw in the set-up? My account profile says bank account is default method with credit card as a back-up (and yes, there is enough money in the account). Any help is greatly appreciated. Diane
  20. Thank you catholicmommy, your post was immensely helpful. I was looking for a literature program for my upcoming 8th grader and think I have just found it :-) Diane
  21. We just took our son out of public middle school due to school policies (this too is a highly acclaimed, affluent district in CA). He has Asperger's, dysgraphia, and some serious vision issues. When we moved here two years ago the school told us that it would be no problem, they would evaluate and he'd be put on an IEP. Nothing happened, he went from being a straight A student to barely C's because he cannot see the board and nobody can read his writing. Every solution we suggested they opposed telling us that in middle school they have to be independent and we as parents have to stay out of his school life. The students here are punished for every little infraction, whether it is their fault or not "to instill discipline" yet when the school messes up, there is no accountability whatsoever (i.e. my son was sent to a wrong room by the office after he came in late due to an excused absence. He went back to the office telling them no one was there and was trying to figure out where he needed to go. He was held over after school for an hour for being tardy). One morning he walks into the gym to find his locker wide open, the lock sawed off and his PE clothing all gone. He was docked a grade on an exam they took that day for not having his PE clothing. The school told us they could not be held responsible for the incident since it was our son's responsibility to make sure he always had his materials and he should have packed a back-up set. He is a really good kid and was moving quickly towards being depressed because he never could get anything right and felt he was failing all the time. At that point we knew that our youngest son would never make it in that environment. He is a lively, fidgety little guy who was suspended in elementary school after he got back at a bully. The principal told us that it was our son's responsibility not to let other people bully him. Being in the military and just having returned from a combat zone my husband also had difficulties to accept the rule that the school could search lockers, backpacks and children at any point without reason or cause and in the absence of parents. He felt almost betrayed by that; he put his life on the line so that others have a reasonable sense of personal sanctity only to come home and find out that this would not apply to his own children. In this district there is a lot of talk about "responsibility" and "independence" but their definition seems toxic to us. We do not wish our children to grow up with the idea that rules and laws only apply to some people but not to others. There were many more incidences and it may only be due to the people in this district but I am so glad that neither us nor our youngest two children won't have to deal with that environment anymore. Academic wise the school was fine compared to others but we were still not happy with the lack of so many subjects (foreign language, geography, arts, music...), there was a lot of repetition to "get them ready for high school".
  22. I cheat :-) Our school week runs Monday through Saturday year round. They attend the German Saturday School on Saturdays and I partly teach in German since it is my native language; it is not really a subject in itself Mondays through Fridays. Art and Music are also taught over the weekend which leaves more time during the week.
  23. In my opinion not NH or IN. In NH we fought tooth and nail and finally received some speech and OT but nothing else. In IN we were told to just wait until our son hit school age and maybe the district could do "something" (that was in the late 90'ies though so things may have changed). We had lots of support and resources in MA (greater Boston area).
  24. We are near the coast, about 10 miles from it. Washed my car yesterday and this morning it has a greasy, black coating mixed with dust on it. We are also surrounded by fields which are heavily sprayed with pesticides and what not, I would be very surprised if none of that gets airborne.
