  1. Yes! I appreciate the concern. That is the next step in our decision making process. Sadly, concussion rates in soccer are pretty high, too. After the soccer game I watched last night, I told him we may need to consider something like swimming. I love his brain and am a wimp about contact sports.
  2. Thanks for the ideas, everyone! I'm already less anxious with all of your input. Thanks. I just know he's going to want to part of the action so I want to help in whatever way we can.
  3. I love this!!! Thanks for sharing. I'll tell my son.😊
  4. I have a 12 year old who requires a lot of interaction with other boys his age to avoid becoming overly melancholy. For him, the need is so strong that we have considered transitioning him to public school next year. He really thought through all of the factors and decided that he would like to continue homeschooling. I am relieved about that. He plays club soccer, but next year many of the boys will move to middle school soccer at their respective public schools, which we are not zoned for. Continuing in club may be an option, but there is no guarantee that he will make the team because of some huge changes that are happening with the club. He has been involved in crossfit for a long time, also. A few weeks ago, our state athletic association decided to allow homeschoolers to play sports at the public school. So, his very best friend in all of the world, a public school student who he rarely gets to spend time with, is playing football at the middle school next year. My guy, who has never really had an interest in football has decided that it would be a great idea if he tried out. I know its mainly to spend time with his friends. He would know about 5 or 6 guys on the team in addition to his "best friend." I am not really stressed about the whole playing at the public school thing. We are comfortable with that part. And I am sure he would make the team, because I think that they are letting everyone on the team who tries out. But, we know nothing about football. How would this go down? He is a great soccer player and he is overall quite physically fit with an athletic build. He is very strong for his age. He CANNOT throw a ball. But, maybe could learn to catch one. He can run pretty fast and has endurance. He is smart. So, what would they do with him? He would not be happy to sit on the bench so how could we get him prepared for season? He presented the idea to us as a chance to learn a new sport while spending time with some of the guys that he has always wanted to spend more time with. Even though he has no real attachment to FOOTBALL, he is the type that would take any extra classes or camps to get up to speed on the sport if he needs to. I just worry about it being football and about whether his friends are going to accept him when he shows up at the end of the day for practice. What to do? What to do?
  5. My kids screamed, covered their ears and REFUSED to consider the issue any further. :) I was ok with it.
  6. I was around on the old forums. I think my first post was in or around 2005, when my oldest was almost two and I was wondering what curriculum I should buy for my brilliant, advanced first born son who already knew his alphabet and could count like to one million or something. Lol. You ladies quickly set me straight. Thank goodness! Those were the good old days. 😊
  7. I found the 10% and it looks like it's available to everyone. Yay! No code needed.
  8. Oh my goodness!!! Thank you for the heads up. I thought I might have a little more time. The discount last year was wonderful, especially for multiple classes within a family. 😃
  9. I remember there being an amazing discount last year, so I started budgeting based on that. But, can't find it this year. Just wondering if I missed it somehow or if it's not being offered. TIA
  10. We are using it now with a 5th and 6th grader. My history loving 6th grader cannot get enough of the readalouds. We haven't had a chance to do much more than just read the books and discuss. It has been perfect for us, because we have a full schedule otherwise. The reading is not overwhelming and could probably be done by my sixth grader independently, but we enjoy the time together reading. The books are the kind you can bond over. Good stuff. Let me know if you have any specific questions.
  11. We don't eat out often. We did when we just had 2 little ones, but now with a family of 6 we just don't. DH is an amazing chef, and can prepare better than restaurant quality food at home for a fraction of the cost. We can put in special requests and although it may take a few days, DH will pull it off as soon as he has the time. However, last night, on a whim we stopped at a popular sit-down Mexican restaurant. We paid $75 in order to sit and eat. It was nice to relax as a family, but really felt wasteful. We have food allergies to manage, too. We all ended up with stomach distress, so it was probably a good thing for building our immunities. We all laughed about needing to invest in some different germs/bacteria ocassionally.
  12. I am heading out of the door so sorry for the brevity, but my situation is similar to yours. I started CAP Latin with dyslexic kiddos and it's been the best time investment we have made. We all do it together, some parts orally if I think its too much writing. It take us a little over a year to finish a level with spending on average 20 minutes a day. It has done wonders for their language skills (even reading, since they had to learn how to read in a different language they applied those skills to reading in English). They are now working pretty much independently, not needing my help very often. If you need any specifics, I will have more time this weekend to chat!
  13. My sympathies to your husband. I am a people pleasing attorney. It's a hard life! Hoping it all works out.
  14. This is where I think we will be when we get started with 7th in the Fall. I am feeling a little nervous about moving to this section of the WTM Board. I have been lingering in the K-8 forum for so long. :) So I am open to any BTDT advise. My 7th grader is very bright, but had a hard time with reading, writing and spelling all throughout elementary. He has worked very hard and I think that he is more than ready to tackle middle school level work. He is my oldest and is combined sometimes with his sister who will be in 6th next school year. Bible: So, I think for the first time we will move to using personal devotions for the year. We just slogged through the CAP Bible series and although they all learned a lot, I want to give them a break from the "read the story and do the worksheet" kind of stuff. I may decide to add something midyear if I need to. I am open to suggestions. Math: WTMA AOPS pre-algebra Latin: Latin for Children C. He is ready to move into Latin Alive Book I, but I think it would be good to complete the LfC series. Kind of undecided. History: Beautiful Feet Early American with the rest of the family. Science: I haven't completely fleshed this out yet, but we will do chemistry and physics. I have the Ellen McHenry Chemistry stuff and some Physics Quest Kits that I have been collecting for years. I will need to select something to tie it all together but I am not sure what yet. Language Arts: We are going to be doing spelling all the way through college so we are going to do Phonetic Zoo (Level B) next year. For Writing we will use the next two or three CAP Writing and Rhetoric Books. Looks like we will be in Books 5 and 6, possibly 7. We also will use some of Essentials in Writing 7th grade, mainly for days when we need something completely independent or when I feel like he needs more grammar. We will also do Reasoning and Reading Level 2. I have some Editor in Chief books and Word Roots that I can add in as necessary. Literature: Not sure, but I am considering the Veritas Press 6th grade List with guides. We like VP guides and I checked grade level and most of the books are at least 7th grade level or above. And they are books he wants to read and they will coordinate well with our history studies. Geography: Finish Mapping the World with Art (Ellen McHenry) and then do some 50 states geography. Music: BF History of Classical Music with the rest of the family. Start back with voice lessons after a year off. Art: Veritas Art History Course with the rest of the family. PE: He is on a competitive soccer team and takes a young athletes crossfit class Logic: We may start MP Traditional Logic when we see how the year is going. Ok. I am officially scared to death. Deep breath. I am sure I will be back to edit a thousand times as I remember what I forgot. Editing so that I don't forget that I'm pondering MP introduction to classical studies, CP Poetry, and philosophy for kids. It won't all fit I. So I have to figure some things out and prioritize. Or make some thing spread out over two years.
  15. Oh my goodness. I will have my first middle schooler in a few months. I will come back and post some tentative plans when I come to terms with this unexpected development. 😳
  16. I agree with at least 2x. The ranges they give are based on pretty small serving sizes. We do a lot of catering and would double even for non-athletes. Also, I hate to say because we LOVED zaxby's, but regrettably every time my kiddos have had zaxby's before a game or during a tournament they have vomited. :(
  17. If I had a mid elementary student with this question who needed a hint, I would tell them to just factor 72 and see what happens.
  18. I had to get some bone broth into my kiddos in a hurry, but it's always been hard to present in a way that they would eat it. I don't like to heat it to much because that just seems to defeat the purpose. Last night I had a brilliant idea and it turned out amazing ! No protests at all. We are gluten free so others choices may vary, but I prepared some brown rice spiral pasta and browned some ground beef. While draining the beef, I turned down the heat and added a jar of beef bone broth to my empty skillet. Then salt, pepper and garlic. I thickened with a little cornstarch dissolved in water. Then added a container of sour creme. Stirred. Removed from the heat and tossed it in a large bowl with the noodles and beef. It took exactly 17 minutes to prepare from start to finish. And even less time than that for 4 picky eaters and one food snob husband to devour it.
