I would see a kid who was not introduced to learning in a home environment at "school age" as redshirted as well. (For me, the debate between a b&M school, private or relgious school, homeschooling, unschooling etc. is a totally different choice).

I hope you get into the new school. For me, there is a huge opportunity cost with a lengthy commute. What else would you rather me doing with that time?

Montessori-style learning might be a good fit.... they use sandpaper letters and chalk before moving on to pencil which is less "forgiving"..... they also have lots of those readiness activities (that focus on the pincer grasp) and teaching cursive instead of print.

Yes, try O'hana (family style) or the buffets so the kids aren't limited to a kids menu. At most of the table service restaurants they will be restricted to the kids menu.

We're heading on a road trip before we return to school and I'm wondering if anyone has any suggestions for carschooling? Things that work or don't work? What to focus on or what to avoid? I'm primarily thinking of my 5 year old (first grader) who should be doing as much reading and writing as possible.... but I'm not sure how that will work in the car! Thanks!
