  1. "In terms of the linked article, I had multiple issues with it. (Not the least of which would be the over-arching theme that a classroom is superior to the home for learning or education. I tend to disagree with that "school" of thought! ;) ) " I didn't get that feeling - I don't believe that a classroom is superior for the home for learning or education. I would see a kid who was not introduced to learning in a home environment at "school age" as redshirted as well. (For me, the debate between a b&M school, private or relgious school, homeschooling, unschooling etc. is a totally different choice).
  2. I hope you get into the new school. For me, there is a huge opportunity cost with a lengthy commute. What else would you rather me doing with that time?
  3. Another perspective from the New York Times.... http://www.nytimes.com/2011/09/25/opinion/sunday/dont-delay-your-kindergartners-start.html?_r=3
  4. Montessori-style learning might be a good fit.... they use sandpaper letters and chalk before moving on to pencil which is less "forgiving"..... they also have lots of those readiness activities (that focus on the pincer grasp) and teaching cursive instead of print.
  5. Thanks for the suggestions.... I'm off to check out what the library has in audiobooks! Any suggestions for quiet activities (for when someone is sleeping)? (Will bring headphones as well).
  6. DS has a December birthday. I suggest sending invitations to the event (even to the relatives who should know!) to make your vision clear.
  7. Gift cards for a night out might be appreciated but I know it was a while before my brother was up to using them since they were so busy. Maybe something local if there is time before he goes?
  8. Who sets the learning goals? How are students evaluated? Expectations for records of work /portfolios? Required testing? (and who pays for it all...)
  9. Yes, try O'hana (family style) or the buffets so the kids aren't limited to a kids menu. At most of the table service restaurants they will be restricted to the kids menu.
  10. I think Emerson goes well with the names of your other kids. It's a family name for me so I don't see it as a girls name though.
  11. Yes, without a doubt. My mother is more and more like my grandmother as she ages.... and I'm becoming more like her!;)
  12. I know you said no scrapbooking but what about something like Project Life where you just routinely add photos and some description. I think you could use your own albums or digital books for the same effect if the products are too scrapbooky! http://www.beckyhiggins.com/products/ideas.php
  13. We're heading on a road trip before we return to school and I'm wondering if anyone has any suggestions for carschooling? Things that work or don't work? What to focus on or what to avoid? I'm primarily thinking of my 5 year old (first grader) who should be doing as much reading and writing as possible.... but I'm not sure how that will work in the car! Thanks!
  14. Tin man press (found at tinmanpress.com) has some creativity/logic activities for elementary students that can be downloaded. I'm sure you'll get lots of other great suggestions.
