  1. I use R&S grammar and pair it with WWE, it works beautifully. We get different types of writing from R&S and I pick and choose which exercises he completes. Before that we did WWE with FLL.
  2. Oh, my son would love this! Thanks.
  3. I couldn't agree with you more. We also take an hour long lunch break and quite time directly afterwards. We do history read alouds after that and then literature is in the evenings as well. If I don't start by a certain time, we are doomed. Also, if I get myself motivated EARLY everything runs smoother. Thanks for your post! :)
  4. I got it for my reluctant writer and used it for several months and then returned it (they have an amazing return policy). I had even used pieces of the program and it was all returned to me and I just mailed the program back. No questions. It didn't work for us here, I found it too formulaic for myself and my reluctant writer. We found ourselves both wanting WWE again. So, you could always give it a shot and if it works, great and if not, return it! :) HTH.
  5. I love ours!!! We live outside the US and we use it a lot.
  6. Mine is the size of the Emma Serl books (not as thick) but in height it is similar. I ordered from Amazon or Rainbow, I cannot remember right now. Hope you get it worked out, we really like the book here.
  7. Oh no, mine is a paperback copy and it's great quality. I am sorry but I might send that back.
  8. With my DS I knew early on when it was the hand he used for everything.
  9. We just finished "third grade" with my DS. We used WRTR for Spelling, R&S 3 for Grammar, WWE 2 for Writing, and McGuffey for reading fluency and additional copywork. We also read aloud and had assigned reading this took about one and half hours a day give or take. Typically, WRTR was longer on Mondays when we would analyze all the words for the week. We only did Grammar 3 times a week and WWE was 3 times as well as we combined two days. It worked for us. He read during quiet time or in the evening.
  10. Thank you for your response. We have no intention of switching as we have been very pleased thus far, I was concerned only when I saw the placement tests. I will continue to press on and trust the methodology and the sequence, thanks again.
  11. So, we have used Singapore 3A/3B coming from Horizons for the end of 2nd grade (when we pulled our son out of PS). I decided to have him do the placement tests for Saxon and Horizons after his 3rd grade books were complete and I am getting nervous. There are some things we have not really covered. For instance, we didn't get into decimals. I understand that Singapore has a different scope and sequence. We really like the program but I am a tad concerned...thoughts? Also, should I just teach the topics that we didn't master this year in seclusion, that seems anti Singaporean theory. I want to trust the method but I am curious as to what others have found.
  12. I went from FLL to R&S and have been very pleased.
  13. I just planned our first 6 weeks out and we have a heavier beginning of the week. My son has piano on Thursday afternoons and Friday is our standard playdate afternoon. So, we find we get more accomplished and more motivated at the beginning of the week. Friday we also do Art, Critical Thinking and Poetry with Math. That's it on Fridays. We school 6 weeks on 1 week off.
  14. I love The Well Planned Day but I am a pencil to paper kind of gal and I can use white out for any subject I would prefer to change.
  15. We have a small library here and they are doing a Summer Reading Program for every 6 hours of reading you get a small prize. At 24 hours you get entered into the grand prize. He set a personal goal of 100 hours from this week until August 7th, he asked if he reached his goal if I would buy him a book series. Like How to Train Your Dragon, Harry Potter, or The Warriors to which I gladly agreed.
  16. Same here and like Ellie says following rabbit trails at the library. I also have a few books like, Books Children Love, etc. for extra help choosing, if necessary.
  17. I, too, use The Well Planned Day and love it. I need paper and pencil, the electronic ones never worked well for me. I also wish that the subjects were not pre-printed. I never thought about correction tape. Good idea. Things get planned, it helps me keep track and see our progress, it's the closest thing I have found that works for me.
  18. I used the Writing Road to Reading to teach formation of cursive letters. He practiced by doing copy work and writing his phonograms in cursive.
  19. I love it when people come back and give updates. Thanks of sharing. My daughter really like 100 Easy Lessons but I put it aside because I didn't like it. Maybe I will pull it out again.
  20. I find such camaraderie here. I am so thankful for threads like this. I have never taught the Spalding method from K - through. I was starting to get nervous about my up and coming K'er and these threads remind me to stick with it. Honestly, they have kept me trucking through and given me the determination to make this work. I started realizing that I was making it more complicated. I tell everyone about Spalding and the WRTR manual. Even if you choose to go with a different method it's really an invaluable tool. I tried many things, this is by far the most effective we have implemented. I am glad to have the community here for questions. I live in a small rural Japanese city on a very tiny American installation. I am grateful for the guidance, thank you UrbanSue and Ellie. Ellie really is great, I emailed her over and over again DURING Christmas time and she was prompt, polite, patient, and helpful. Keep going, it becomes more and more clear. Hopefully, by the time my third child is ready I will have this down pat. :)
  21. My son, who came home in the middle of 2nd grade did this and reversed p's and q's. We started the Spalding method using WRTR. Works like a charm, he realized where to start the letters and it works. It was an easy fix.
