  1. I spent weeks last summer making beautiful lesson plans. I coordinated Truthquest Middle Ages with SOTW 2, chose projects, library books, read alouds, readers to buy etc. Elaborate 36 weeks tightly scheduled down to page numbers. I have been off track the entire year and will catch up this summer. It was a complete waste of time. All year I have found treasures I want to read instead. I also discovered books that were too quick of a read for my children or really boring etc. Next year I will forego the lesson plans and go through Truthquest Early American History for Young Children vol1 (to year 1800) and SOTW3 individually - not try to perfectly coordinate them. I'll spend some time marking up the books what the library has and what I have, but that is it! Then we will simply use our notebooks with SOTW pages, tests, photos of projects, drawings, narrations, Dover coloring books and paper dolls, etc to document our school year. I'll keep a running Word doc of all read a louds and readers and print it for their notebooks at the end of the year. That will be so refreshing and simple! I'll do the same for earth science and astronomy... My language arts and math are "do the next thing" anyway. I'm really excited!
  2. I've read through most of the comments. I've already said most of what I wanted to say on the topic, but I did want to clarify one thing. I was not referring to parents of children on the spectrum who do not supervise their children or who allow their children to harm others. Obviously that is totally unacceptable. I'm referring to the uncharitable judgements parents of neurotypical children make of parents of children with hidden disibilities ~ when they have no idea of what these parent's challenges are. No idea. That's all.

  4. It comes up often on the boards.... This is not directed at Doran personally! Usually the topics are along the lines of other people's kids are picky eaters, smart mouthed or media obsessed. And you hate being around them. And you feel a need to talk to their parents about their children's behavior and their poor parenting. They may be related to you or your dear friend. And oh yeah. They have something like an autism spectrum or sensory processing disorder but the problem really is that the parents stink. Ladies - really, there is more to it than parenting. Really! Read up on it if you really love these families. If you don't love them, then leave them alone. I've been stared at enough in one trip at the zoo to last a lifetime. My 10 yos with pdd-nos and mild mr literally drew a crowd of 50 people bc of a major meltdown. I refused to buy a toy at the giftshop. We HAD to go in to buy bottled water for my type 1 diabetes son to wash his finger. No drinking fountains to be found. My profoundly handicapped son receives endless compassion from strangers. My son with autism - scorn and derision when he melts down (rarely) or stims.... All because it's an invisible disibility. If you want to understand, then get reading. Otherwise, just get out of the way.
  5. Siblings of children on the spectrum do not need to be coddled, but they should have all of the kindness and compassion in the world. He may never have a chance to play that gameboy bc of his brother's obsession with it for all we know. I don't think you were mean, but I know my younger children go through a lot from having disabled siblings! They don't feel sorry for themselves and aren't aware they are suffering, but they are somewhat nonetheless.
  6. My 8yod and are going to Acadia National park /Bar Harbor, Maine in early June. It's my Mother's Day gift! England sounds wonderful - have a great time!
  7. Next year: Christian light math Rod and Staff English Christian Liberty Press Spelling A Reason for Handwriting *all of these of these are "do the next lesson" - I do teach however ! :) SOTW3 with Truthquest AHYS1 Christian Kids Explore Earth and Space w/ extra readings A Child's Geography I think I'll just meander through these, after spending some time marking through what my library has, what I've bought, and what I will ILL. I'm beginning to think specific plans are a waste of time, as long as I know I'm basically on track! I'm not on schedule now, but I'll finish science and history up this summer - no biggie! But I have spent countless hours on those plans and most of the books I picked we didn't end up even reading - they weren't appropriate for whatever reason and we chose other ones. It just seems ridiculous sometimes. I just tested my daughter with the CAT-5 for 3rd grade. She missed 6 answers as far as I could tell on the entire test. We hadn't even taught long divison yet but she even guessed a couple of those right :). I know standardized testing isn't the end all be all - but it was VERY reassuring to know that we are doing well here. We are going to start just picking up books at the library bc they look good *gasp* - not bc they are on my plan for the week. I think my overall philosophy is going to be more relaxed... Any thoughts?
  8. I am decluttering so much stuff! We have decided not to have more children. I've had some ladies at church go through all my clothes and nicer toys. I still have boxes of clothes, toys, linens, lamps, some furniture, outdoor toys - all kinds of things. I'm physically limited with MS and our weekends are busy - my daugher has ballet, and one of my kids is very disabled. It just seems dumb to try to get ALL of this stuff (by myself) over to our neighborhood yard sale to try to make a $150 dollars! Which would you choose? 1. Take all the stuff to the popular neighborhood yard sale. Requires set up, take down, and carrying to Goodwill truck when over. 2. Just call a charity to come get the huge pile of stuff by my garage. Then, get the receipt after I take pics of it all for my tax records.
  9. not photos of prostitutes and every single child abuse story nationwide on my home page. My sister said arts and letters was good, but I really like the breaking news on Fox, CNN and MSNBC. But that is IT these days.... Help!
  10. Just thinking ahead. What do do after SOTW? I was considering just outlining Streams of Civilization or Kingfisher after we finish up SOTW. Then it hit me. Veritas worksheets failed before because my young children's handwriting and writing skills were so rudimentary at the Veritas appointed ages. If I tried again when they are in 5th -6th grades they could whiz through the memorization and the worksheets/tests. It might really benefit them before we start Omnibus. Has anyone considered this delayed, condensed approach to Veritas History? I would likely do the first 3 sets the first year and the last 2 sets the second year.
  11. Ok, thanks! I thought I was being reasonable :) They will try to get the 3rd grade test for me. If not, I'll order it in the next couple of days. We'll just consider today a practice test :).
  12. my church homeschool group ordered 2nd grade CAT-5 for my 8yod instead of 3rd grade. She's testing today at the church. The ladies were saying that it is just a state requirement and not to worry about the wrong level. But I want the right grade!!!! Wouldn't you!!! I'm going to have to somehow get the 3rd grade test to test at home next week... Just want to know what you all would do in this situation???
  13. My best friend and I went out for dinner this week. I had posted a couple weeks ago about wanting to have more "style" before I turned 40! I wore a cute dress, shoes with a wedge heel (I have a hard time walking from recently acquired MS and use a cane) and wore eye makeup for the first time ever!!! We had a great time, but on the way to the car it was a huge thunderstorm and flash flood! We were literally drenched. I was falling all over in those stupid shoes bc I'm so used to my Crocs. My eye make up looked ridiculous. We had a good laugh!
  14. You can't tell in the pic but the walls are khacki! They are quite dark next to the white molding. Any darker would be cocoa :)
  15. Should curtains kind of blend in to your wall/paint color or be a decorating statement? My husband and I were talking about that this afternoon. I've never thought about it!
  16. We need to buy thermal/blackout curtains. We are having a lot of break-ins in our area - bummer! We have bamboo blinds and we need to cover up so people can't see in at night. The windows are for the front rooms - our homeschool and music/reading rooms. My colors are khacki, red with navy and green accents. Music/reading room picture: (I'll add a better one tomorrow) Red or khacki (cafe) curtains?: http://www5.jcpenney.com/jcp/ProductsHOM.aspx?DeptID=25437&CatID=53989&CatTyp=DEP&ItemTyp=C&GrpTyp=SIZ&ItemID=130deb6&ProdSeq=14&Cat=thermal+draperies&Dep=Window&PCat=Energy+Saving&PCatID=53988&RefPage=ProductList&Sale=&ProdCount=20&RecPtr=&ShowMenu=&TTYP=&ShopBy=0&RefPageName=CategoryAll%252Easpx&RefCatID=53988&RefDeptID=25437&Page=99&CmCatId=EXTERNAL|53989 Thanks for your advice!!
  17. he gave all of our kids Zithromax as a precaution for the exposure, but he didn't test him. Likely the croup, but better to be safe.
  18. Here are the plans: http://familyfun.go.com/arts-and-crafts/season/feature/sandbox1/ http://familyfun.go.com/arts-and-crafts/season/feature/sandbox1/sandbox2.html http://familyfun.go.com/arts-and-crafts/season/feature/sandbox1/sandbox4.html http://familyfun.go.com/arts-and-crafts/season/feature/sandbox1/sandbox12.html http://familyfun.go.com/arts-and-crafts/season/feature/sandbox1/sandbox13.html
  19. every single book your children read. Not the books assigned, but every book they pick up and finish? Wow! I have no idea all the books my 8yo has read. Lots and lots. Should I be keeping track somewhere??
  20. my pediatrician and her husband are both out with a new baby for a few more weeks. Their partner is my doctor and sees my kids too sometimes. SHE's on maternity leave too!!! Isn't that crazy! I know the other docs a little bit because of our family's special needs, but this is a sensitive issue. Someone will advise us well though.
  21. I just found out children from our church were recently diagnosed with pertussis. My younger bio kids aren't vaccinated at all, bc my older son almost died from his 15 month shots (was in intensive care for 3 weeks). SO, how many weeks would you keep your children home from church with this scenario?
  22. I'm using the times in the email, but it's not there. :(
