  1. Books from the past year that I've really loved and have found very moving: The Hired Girl Gods in Alabama Tell Me Three Things A Mother's Reckoning A Fall of Marigolds Our Souls at Night The Pianist The Sea of Tranquility Did You Ever Have a Family
  2. We'd tell our boys when they were each going through a whiny stage to "use a strong voice!" Their stages didn't last for long, thankfully; drove us crazy as well!!
  3. I've also really enjoyed/found hard to put down: The Secret Keeper The Gilded Years A Man Called Ove The Hired Girl Tell Me Three Things Gods in Alabama Revised Fundamentals of Caregiving Everyone Brave is Forgiven Circling the Sun The Nightingale
  4. Sorry!! I didn't mean to be negative. I think my husband definitely got our money's worth. It's a really nice looking and feeling jacket! I don't feel at all bitter about buying another. I bet your husband will love it!
  5. I gave my husband the dark grey one about a year and a half ago. I'm thinking of buying him another for Fathers Day because the cuffs are visibly worn out! It's a great sweatshirt and I don't mind replacing it so soon because he has gotten a lot of use out of it, it looks nice, and it has a really nice weight..... but it's definitely not lifetime lasting!
  6. We have used this: https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B000068NSI/ref=oh_aui_search_detailpage?ie=UTF8&psc=1 and then we've taken them to a framing store that backs the puzzles to make them sturdy/hangable.
  7. Ha! I have never heard of such thing. Off to google! 😆
  8. What in the world is a meat truck?!
  9. Oh, figured it out (was trying through Amazon but then realized I should just go to audible)! Thank you!!
  10. Thank you! Do you have to have a membership to get it this way?
  11. Our seven year old had a wart similar to what you described (right next to the nail; his was towards the cuticle). He had it for at least a year and our dermatologist said that because of where it was she'd prefer to leave it alone (as opposed to doing something aggressive). She said "you could always try duct tape..." with an expression that made it seem like she didn't have a lot of hope but it was worth a shot. I'd tried that before on myself without success, so I just dismissed it, but just recently, my husband decided to give it a go. He wrapped DS's finger with a strip of duct tape each night (just to wear while he was sleeping) and after about a week it had turned black and fallen off!! I was amazed. So...maybe worth a try?
  12. I was having that same problem a couple weeks ago--was so annoying! I had to google to see how to unshuffle. When you're looking at the what's playing screen, swipe up! You'll see the shuffle button and you can touch that. If that doesn't make sense, look at this: http://www.businessinsider.com/how-to-turn-shuffle-off-on-ios-10-2016-7
  13. We love bacon-wrapped, cream cheese stuffed jalapenos. I saw the recipe on Pioneer Woman's website many years ago and have made them many times since. They're always a hit--no matter how many we make, they always run out!
  14. Agreed!!! We bought one about a year ago and love it!!!
  15. I love this recipe! Cottage Pie 2 tablespoons extra-virgin olive oil 3 tablespoons unsalted butter 1 medium onion, diced 3 medium carrots, peeled and sliced 1 rib celery, sliced 1/2 pound cremini mushrooms, quartered 2 cloves garlic, minced 1 tablespoon kosher salt 3/4 teaspoon dried oregano 3 tablespoons tomato paste 1 pound ground beef 1/4 cup canned low sodium beef broth 1/2 teaspoon Worcestershire sauce Freshly ground black pepper 4 cups Mashed Potatoes, recipe follows 1/4 cup grated Parmesan, optional Preheat oven to 375 degrees F. Heat the olive oil and 2 tablespoons of the butter in a large skillet over medium heat. Add the onion, carrots, celery, mushrooms, garlic, half the salt, and oregano. Cook until vegetables are tender, about 10 minutes. Stir in the tomato paste and cook until mushrooms are soft and tomato paste has turned brick red, about 8 minutes more. Stir in the beef, the broth, the remaining salt, the Worcestershire, and some pepper, breaking up any large clumps of meat, cook until the meat is no longer pink, about 3 minutes. Transfer the meat and vegetables to a 2-quart oval casserole dish and spread the mashed potatoes over the top, leaving a 1/4-inch border around the edge. Make a decorative pattern on the top of the potatoes, if desired. Sprinkle with cheese, if using, and dot with the remaining tablespoon of butter. Bake until potatoes brown and the juices bubble around the edge, about 40 minutes. Let cool for 10 minutes before serving. Mashed Potatoes: 1 1/2 pounds russet potatoes, peeled quartered 2 teaspoons kosher salt, plus more for seasoning 3/4 cup whole milk 6 tablespoons unsalted butter 2 tablespoons chopped fresh flat-leaf parsley Freshly ground black pepper Put the potatoes in a saucepan with cold water to cover by about 1-inch and add the salt. Bring to a simmer over medium-high heat, uncovered, until the potatoes are tender but not mushy, about 15 minutes. At the same time, combine the milk and butter in a small saucepan and warm over low heat until the butter is melted. Remove from the heat and cover to keep warm. Drain the potatoes and return to the saucepan. Toss the potatoes over medium heat until dry. Add the heated milk mixture and mash the potatoes until just slightly chunky, then stir in the parsley and season with salt and pepper, to taste.
  16. Is it possible to watch online? Just checked the pbs app but didn't see the current season on there (unless I was looking in the wrong spot?!)...
  17. Also not a doctor....:-) but our ND(s) would always encourage giving fish oil to lessen ear wax. At that age, we'd puncture Children's Nordic Naturals capsules and squirt the oil into our kids' mouths. (I'd guess Nordic Naturals probably carries a children's liquid fish oil, but we always have the capsules on hand!)
  18. I am sad when I hear people had such rough middle school experiences. I loved middle school. Really, really loved it. I had an amazing teacher who developed my confidence in so many ways (sadly, he died shortly after I graduated from college; I wish my husband and children could've met him). I really came out of my shell during those years.
  19. OH!! I see, that makes sense. Thank you all! I'll give these things a try!
  20. Oh, thank you!! Ill remove/clean the seal and try again. I think there was enough liquid (had worked for me before), but I did pour it around the chicken this time as opposed to directly on it...not sure if that could've contributed? It hadn't just been taken out of the dishwasher; I've been keeping it all put together on our counter after washing it... do you mean the pot itself should be kept in the freezer? It didn't even occur to me to try to push down a bit on the lid...I wonder now if that would've worked!! The chicken is out now and wound up cooking even though it didn't pressurize...I guess it was steam cooked?
  21. I have used my Instant Pot a handful of times, but today when I was making a whole chicken (recipe from Great Food Fast that I've made a few times), the IP kept steaming (with setting "ON")... My husband noticed that the steam release knob wasn't down all the way, so he pushed that down... It kept steaming... Then I tapped the float valve with a pen and it started the minutes countdown. But... it never stopped steaming! I've been trying to troubleshoot online but have had no success. Any ideas as to why it didn't seal/stop steaming? Thanks for any help!!
  22. We love this lentil chili: Winter Lentil Chili Source: Nordstrom Friends and Family Cookbook, p. 45 Serves 8-10 2 cups lentils, rinsed and picked over 7 cups water or vegetable broth 1 large yellow onion, finely chopped 2 large red or yellow bell peppers, seeded, deribbed, and finely chopped 2 cans (14.5 ounces each) diced tomatoes in juice 1 can (15 ounces) tomato sauce ¾ cup beer 3 tablespoons chili powder 1 tablespoon ground cumin 2 teaspoons dried oregano 1 ½ teaspoons cayenne pepper 1 ½ teaspoons kosher salt (1 cup sour cream) (1 cup shredded Cheddar cheese) In a 6- to 8- quart saucepan, over medium-high heat, combine the lentils and water. Bring to a simmer, reduce the heat to medium-low so the water simmers gently, and cook the lentils until tender, about 45 minutes. Add the onion, bell peppers, tomatoes with juice, tomato sauce, beer, chili powder, cumin, oregano, cayenne, and salt. Stir well, reduce the heat to low, and keep the soup at a bare simmer until the flavors meld, about 30 minutes longer. Taste and adjust the seasoning. Ladle the chili into warmed bowls and top each serving with a dollop of sour cream and some of the cheese (for non-vegans :-) ) Serve immediately.
  23. My husband and I both read that about 10 years ago! It totally inspired us and we're hoping to take a year off to do the same in about 3 yrs.
