  1. Wow. I'm the only "other"? I just sort of bite into it. By that, I mean, I don't eat typewriter style or go all the way around. I do, however, make my bites next to each other, so there aren't patches of kernels left behind (my OCD self wouldn't be able to stand that). I take a bite, another bite above, and then another bite next to that, then again below, creating a sort of 'square', then continue that 'pattern'. Dd, however, doesn't care for corn (on the cob or other), so she takes what we call 'mouse bites'. As in it looks like a mouse has nibbled all around the cob! I don't know how everyone else eats theirs, as I haven't paid attention. I will in the future, though, as now you have made me curious!!:lol:
  2. :iagree: In fact, the moment I saw that your son was going to college in Japan (a long time ago), I wondered how it compared economically to college here in the states. The reply you gave your questioner satisfied my own curiosity. :D It also made me realize that I should ask my dc if they want to consider looking outside the US for school. :iagree: with everything here. Often, when someone does something outside the norm, people will be curious and ask questions. I have been asked what the cc costs when people hear my ds is dual enrolled there. I just give a ballpark figure (it's all on their website, anyway). Since only you know the tone of the question, and of the conversation in general, it's hard for us to say if it was asked with general curiosity, or with a slant towards asking about your personal finances. If it was general curiosity, it wouldn't bother me.
  3. I love happy dances!! In fact, I'm hoping to have one of my own soon. Until then, I'll dance with you!!:party::party::party::party::party:
  4. You can do it. You have accomplished so much. :grouphug::grouphug:
  5. Oh, yes. Several times. In fact, right now, I have two 'spares' of my favorite summer sandals in my closet. I just stick the boxes high up and out of the way until they are needed. Like others who have posted, I have also done the same with jeans, tops, undergarments, slippers... pretty much everything. The best is when I can buy said items on sale or even better..... *clearance*!
  6. Wow. I'm all ears waiting to hear the rest of what you have to share.
  7. I have five rugs in my home. Three are 8x11 and two are 5x7. The most expensive one I bought two months ago at Lowe's for $299. I'm not sure what your price point is, but around here, that was a great price. Of my rugs, three came from Lowe's (Home Depot also had a nice selection at comparable prices--- just not the patterns we wanted), one rug came from the now-defunct Linens-N-Things, and one rug came from JC Penney. All the rugs seem to be of decent quality and with the exception of my new rug, are all seven years old and still look new. The new rug was purchased just because I got tired of the old one... the old one still looked new, too. Oh, depending on the size you want, I have seen 5x7 rugs at Kohl's and Target, too.
  8. Brenda, the part I bolded helps.... I was wondering at what point in the whole process would we find out what does & doesn't transfer. I have only a small idea what the admissions/application process entails. This would be great if one could count on everything transferring. There is one major at the cc ds would be interested in, but the likelihood of obtaining said degree is close to nil due to the fact that a pre-req class of a 100 level hasn't been offered in the two years ds has attended. :001_huh: That one class is needed before any of the 'core major' classes can be taken. :confused:We gave up on the idea of an AA sometime last year. Thanks Margaret. I have a downloaded copy of the catalog (which has the course descriptions) and I have saved all his labs, classwork, tests, syllabi, and not only do I have the TOC and ISBNs from his texts, but I have photocopies of them, as well. I read here on the boards some time ago to keep all that, so I did! :D
  9. I'm just replying to each suggestion in one post for cohesion. In looking at the top four on ds' list, AP/CLEP/IB are mentioned but not transfer or DE credit. :-( At least, there are no specifics mentioned. I may just have to go down and ask. Alabama does have a program (see Barbara's quote below), but I've heard it doesn't guarantee that class X will actually transfer for class X at the uni... it will 'count', but maybe just for an elective. I have heard this is especially true for math & science classes. I went to a large state school's site and did just that. I got a bajillion hits and none of the ones I checked were helpful. :glare: Thanks for the tip on the terminology, though... I do plan to use it for the other schools on our list, even though those are less likely candidates. Barbara, yes, I'm in Alabama, and ds does have the STARS program thingy. That thing is so confusing, though! It wanted a major, but ds didn't know what his major would be, so I printed several. It turns out ds may change completely, so his classes may not transfer under STARS. PLUS, one school mentioned it was their discretion as to 'count' classes 'one for one' (see my response to Jann above). Are you more familiar with the STARS program? The admissions person at the cc was less than helpful. Thanks ladies for the help. I will try to contact people at both the cc and ds' first choice unis and see about the transfer thing. Do any of you know *when* during the application/admissions process we find out what, if anything, transfers (or does that fall under the ever-hated "check with your uni")? :tongue_smilie::lol:
  10. Peela, thanks for the update. It's great to hear from you. I'm so glad for you that things are going well!! :grouphug:
  11. I would be a MAJOR pain in both of their rears, explaining about your dd's lack of confidence, and then if the problem wasn't resolved, *after* the recital and file a complaint with the Better Business Bureau. I did just that when my kids were in Karate. We had paid for sparring equipment and never received it despite asking about it at every lesson. By the time our year was up, we didn't want to continue there because of how the place was run, so we left. We still didn't get our equipment, nor did we receive a refund. I filed a complaint with the BBB and within about 3 weeks I had a check mailed to me. I'm sorry your dd feels unprepared because of this. :glare:
  12. Joanne, I'm so sorry to hear this. I had hoped that things were getting at least little better. The whole thing about Adrian needing to get worse before getting the help he needs is just mind boggling to me. I'm so sorry for all that you are going through. You are one strong woman. :grouphug::grouphug::grouphug:
  13. Aw, astrid. :grouphug::grouphug::grouphug: Definitely take the time to recharge yourselves and don't feel guilty about it.
  14. When dealing with cc classes, when (and how) does one find out which, if any, classes transfer to a university? Do I need to contact each prospective uni? If so, when.... before applying? After? Who do I need to speak with? Is e-mail OK, or should I phone? How the classes will transfer, or not, may be the 'make or break' for ds' uni choice. Anyone have pearls of wisdom for me? :bigear: Thanks in advance!
  15. I so feel your pain. Just last Wednesday I went to Kohl's where I tried on the cutest dress. I haven't bought a dress in about five years, so I was thrilled to see one in a style and fabric that *might* look good on me. It was too big in the ribcage and waaayyy too tiny in the b00k area. I couldn't even zip it. Not even close. Seriously? I don't have tomes, just your regular, very average b00ks. Over the last two weeks I have been shopping three times and have hit several stores. I tried on a total (yes, I counted because it's so traumatic) of 47 shirts--- I bought two. Which, technically is "one" because I bought the same shirt in two colors. :glare: It's discouraging when I try so hard to spend money on clothes and come home empty handed.... or with something new for the kitchen.
  16. Paden? You have a 'Paden'? A woman after my own heart! :D Paden "Can't you see this horse loves me?" *snip* Paden "My name is under the saddle" Sheriff "What's your name?" Cobb "Paden. P. A. D. E. N." Ahh.... I love that movie. Dh not so much. I would have loved to have a 'Paden'. :D :D Your ds' name is fine by me!
  17. :grouphug: Poor Jasper! And your poor dh. I'm glad Jasper will get better, though.
  18. That's good news. :grouphug::grouphug: to you and your family.
  19. Wow. I've just been a silent observer on this and the previous thread, but wow. Audrey, kudos to you for being so gracious. Seriously. Everything shows on my face so every emotion would have been plastered all over me for the world to read. The theory of her being an Aspie is interesting, and one I will remember in case I am ever in such a situation. The dinner she served reminded me of The Burbs with Tom Hanks when the neighbors all went over to the "strange house" to see who lived there and were invited in and served crackers with sardines. :001_huh: I'm not familiar with the Charlie Brown dinner others have mentioned, so The Burbs is what popped into my mind. I'm glad for you this is over, though. While I can imagine the stress you felt wasn't fun, I am glad you can laugh at it all. I feel for the poor woman.
  20. Wow. We literally just added UF to ds' college list last night (he wants to be a CS major). I was writing in pen, too. I guess I need to make notes on prospective colleges in pencil as if I'm doing a crossword puzzle. Geez. Even if the article is misleading, I find that to be sad. Just. Wow. :glare:
