Help!! I see the refurbished Ipad 3 for a pretty decent price but now they have the new ipad mini. I have never owned an ipad but I want my kids to have one for the educational apps. Seems like the ipad mini might be great for their little hands. They are 7 and 8. Anyone have ideas on which I should go with? Or I should I just get the Ipad 4 when it comes out? Decisions!!!!!

My daughter really wants a self paced curriculum where she can finish high school at a more quick rate. She is very responsible and self sufficient. She wants to do the American School https://www.americanschoolofcorr.com She also wants to go into pre-med at UTSA. She is the oldest of four kids and the only one currently being homeschooled. I am a single mom and currently working a lot (from home). My question is this: Will this school be frowned up on by UTSA if she tries to get into Pre-Med. She is in the 11th grade and was homeschooled last year too but using mostly Seton and a hodge podge of our own things. I don't have a husband to bounce ideas off of. I just don't know what to do. Advice?

Has anyone graduated a child from high school at age 16 (after finishing what would be 10th grade in ps). If so, how do you document this on their transcript? I would be especially grateful for anyone who has samples of what an accelerated transcript like this would look like. Most colleges want 6 complete semesters documented. How does this end up looking on a transcript for those who have done it?

What should my friend say to bigots?
iluvmy4blessings replied to ElizabethB's topic in General Education Discussion Board
I live in Texas so that wouldn't be happening here!! I will say that it's a nice thought to believe that you could say something to a racist/bigot and it would suddenly turn their entire way of thinking around but unfortunately that's probably not the case. People who have these belief systems and behaviors have them deeply ingrained and wouldn't suddenly have a complete paradigm shift because of a witty reply. If this sort of thing happens often then I wonder why they live there. There are so many places around the country to live. Here there is actually a majority of Hispanic population. Then again, wherever you go you will always find racists. I would actually not say anything at all. what if you instigate them to do more than just say something rude? -
atkins/low carb people...I need help!

Eggs!! You can make a ton of low carb recipes with eggs if you get creative -
My daughter currently in public school (2nd grade) is 2 years behind in her reading level. She repeated 1st grade and was in "intervention" all last year which is not really a sped program but rather being pulled out for extra reading groups. This year I told them I wanted to start the evaluation process. I want her tested to see if she has a reading disability. The principal told me we would start the process by no later than week 3. Nothing happened. I emailed the teacher who told me they would like to continue with RTI (response to intervention) and see how she responds. Basically they want to continue giving her extra time in the classroom but they do not want to start the ball rolling towards special ed services. So they write and say they want to have an RTI meeting with me next week. I know enough about the law to know that RTI is not SPED. I just want my daughter to be tested. That's it. I've been trying for about 3 years but they clearly are digging their feet in. To have her evaluated myself is super expensive. I'm wondering will it kill them to just have someone test her officially for any reading disabilities??? Please advise if you know what is up in Texas with this!

My heart is heavy tonight over my 8yo ds.

Focusing on the beer makes sense to me if he is OCD. Once you mentioned that it was a "forbidden" thing for children then the OCD tendencies took it from there. Even if you're not an OCD person, you deal with thoughts coming in your mind that you don't want . The more you feel you should not think about it...the more you think about it! Honestly, I think he needs to be on medication as well as therapy so that he can understand these things are NOT his fault. If he internalizes guilt from these thoughts that are out of his control he could also develop some emotional problems just from the guilt. I hope you can find someone who can help him. -
SWB's next adult-level history book?

Did you read the first one and was it good? I'm thinking of getting it for my daughter to supplement the curriculum she is using. -
Oak Meadow/Laurel Springs reviews?
iluvmy4blessings replied to AHASRADA's topic in High School and Self-Education Board
We also chose Seton for several of your above mentioned reasons. It is *very* accredited and does offer a diploma. You are held accountable to someone else and it is a very all in one program. Plus the cost is about the least expensive for getting everything in one package. -
What is your current spiritual condition?
iluvmy4blessings replied to skirch's topic in General Education Discussion Board
As for my personal spiritual condition...I'd say it's overcast lately. I have had a strong Christian faith but the past year has really thrown me too many curve balls. I lost my Mom last January and this month is her bday. She was my best friend. Life without her seems weird and I can't get used to it. I live mostly in denial b/c when I come out of denial for too long I get depressed. Aside from that, I had a great job doing contract work on my own hours from home and the state cut our funding. Additionally, my house flooded from tree roots breaking and I got rear ended (minor but when added on top of everything else just seemed unnecessary!) And all this happened in a 2 month time span. So I'm going through a very dry spell. I'm hoping it won't last forever b/c it's been ongoing for about 6 months. -
I read that Netflix has to pay a fee for their streaming movies according to how many streaming subscribers they have. As it is, all their subscribers are lumped into one boat. Supposedly it will be cheaper for them to seperate out the DVD only customers from the streaming so that way they are only paying the fee for actual streaming subscribers. I don't know if any of what I just said makes sense but I read that explanation in a tech blog! If this is true, they should say so. At least it's better than the lack of explanation they are currently giving. As it stands they just appear to be messing with a good thing. I dropped the DVD plan when they changed their price plans recently. To be honest, I mostly use streaming anyway. Now if I want a DVD I use redbox. Since they've decided to make it into two websites I will definitely not use the DVD plan anymore. And whose brilliant idea was it to name the new company Qwikster without even registering the trademark? Didn't they check twitter and other places to see if it was being used. Now we have a pot smoking Elmo representing them?!! How can such a high paid exec make such a huge blunder and still have his job Monday morning?

Yikes! That girl is in for a rude awakening. Obviously public schooled kids do outside studying for the SAT if they intend to score well on it. She clearly just isn't hanging out with that crowd. As for the comments, I probably wouldn't respond. I'm of the general opinion that people who make those kinds of ignorant comments are more of an embarrassment to themselves than anything else. And being an embarrassment to yourself is already a punishment!

I'm still curious if math/science is naturally her strong area or weak area? Is she interested in going into the math/science field or is she stronger in liberal arts? I'm asking b/c I majored in English and Psychology in college. I also have a Masters degree. I consider myself to be a fairly intelligent person :) and I had to drop Chemistry in high school before I failed it. I ended up being put in Earth Science which at the time was like the *shame* class for those who couldn't hack Chemistry. I took "Math for Liberal Arts" in college for my math prerequisite which was a nice way of saying "Math for people who can't do Math"! I dodged Chemistry again in college but failed Biology. I ended up managing to take Physical Geography in summer school and passed it with a C. Unfortunately, I got hit with Statistics b/c of my psych degree which I failed WITH a tutor. I had the same professor for "Statistics" and "History of Psychology". I was making an A in the history class and an F in the stat class. I literally was his best student at the 9 am class and his worst at 10 am. I kid you not!! He and I would discuss how amazing it was I could be so good at one thing and so horrid at another!! I retook Statistics and passed with a C mostly b/c the professor felt sorry for me and knew how much I was trying. Then I met up with Statistics again in Grad school. Once again I had a tutor and barely passed with a C. Once again, it was only b/c the teacher counted homework and projects as a higher percentage than tests. Since I was able to get help from my tutor with homework and projects I was able to pass b/c I bombed most of the tests. I reveal my embarrassing weaknesses here only to say that I am quite brilliant in other areas!! I'm just not so great at math/science once you get past Algebra 2.

I used to teach in the classroom. I have my Masters in Education (BA in English/Psychology) and I'm state certified in Texas for grades 4-8. I have applied to teach through K12 but haven't gotten a call from them. I'd really like to find a way to teach from home for extra income. If anyone has tips or suggestions I'm open!

Dual enrollment
iluvmy4blessings replied to Teachin'Mine's topic in High School and Self-Education Board
I thought you could only take dual enrollment at a CC. Can you take it at a regular 4 year college too? -
I totally get how you feel. I actually think it depends on your goals. To me, a lot of people are doing all these things (AP, SAT subject etc) to aim for scholarships or to cast a big net out there and see what they will get back (college offers etc). It can be a lot of pressure to put on yourself and your child. Some people will not want that added pressure. In my opinion, you don't necessarily need all those extras to get into college. You have to adjust your plan to your goals. If you're trying to get scholarships or get into Ivy League or some selective program then that might be necessary. Otherwise, you might want to follow a path that gives more flexibility.

How to get my work done?
iluvmy4blessings replied to jazz!'s topic in High School and Self-Education Board
I agree that you have a tough course load. It's no wonder you are overwhelmed! Maybe you should just drop back on the amount and then you will be able to focus more. For me personally, I get things done best when I go to bed early and get up early. If I don't get it done in the morning, I don't get it done!! Plus if you get up and get it finished then you have the rest of the day free! -

Are you having anytime for extracurricular activities? I know that's important too and you seem so busy!!
