DD graduated Saturday. This morning I updated her transcript and submitted the final version to her U via Common App. I also filed the printed transcript in her portfolio. Can I retire as her guidance counselor and just be mom now?!

My son applied to App State and NC State. He was accepted at App and was wait listed for NC State pending some more info which he never submitted because he wanted to go to App.
Those are the only 2 he applied to.
He is heading to App State in Aug.
Congratulations!

DS just graduated summa cum laude from Ohio State with a major in Linguistics and minors in History and Turkish. He's been accepted into the Masters program in Near Eastern Studies, so he'll be staying there for a couple more years. Eventually he wants to do a PhD, but hasn't decided whether he wants to pursue Linguistics or something more related to Near Eastern/Central Asian studies.
Congratulations! Sounds like a very interesting path.

He just deposited at Vanderbilt! So many big, conflicted feelings still, but I think he's relieved to have a decision (as am I).
Congrats! 🎉

In a similar vein, I was watching a livestream on collegevine. It was a live essay review, and the essay was so bad I couldn't believe it.
After a few sentences, and the reviewer admirably offering corrections, I thought this couldn't possilby be real. It had to be some sort of prank.
It was funny in a sad kind of way.
I’ve seen a few essays like that— one recently from a friend’s daughter who just graduated from undergrad and needed me to edit her personal statement for her 2nd degree BSN application to the same school. When reading it, I looked around for the candid camera like I was being ‘punked’. It was that bad. And she got into the program, so what do I know?!

...and he just got offered a spot at Blair/Vanderbilt! Argh! That doesn't make things any easier! Very interested to see the FA package.
That’s an exciting development! Well, exciting for those of us watching from home— nerve wracking for you decision-makers! Good luck and do keep us posted!

Curious about the Command Strip issue, so I immediately go look at the "what you can't bring" list from Mushroom's school.
This is an excellent list of stuff. Pets, road signs, fireworks, firearms...
But not command strips on the list.
Have you said where he’s decided attend? I probably missed it somewhere!

When we toured DD’s campus recently, the dorm room we saw was a quad! Gah 😩! All I could think of is how terrible it would be for passing along colds/flus to have four college kids sharing that one small space. If my DD gets placed in a quad, the first thing I’ll buy is the biggest/best air purifier I can find.

The thing I do find funny about this is the inclusion on rover.com ad. Looking for Stanford loyalists? I'm sure there is some percentage of the population that would find this a draw actually (oh, must come from a GOOD family). But I can't imagine Stanford actually prepares you for pet care better than most other educational or employment settings. 😂
I totally agree! All I care about is whether you will let my 15-year old Chiwenie sleep in bed with you and tell him what a smart, pretty boy he is about 20 times a day!

I was just looking for a Rover dog sitter, and I came across this gem. Either this person absolutely did NOT graduate from Stanford, or he wasted his money and learned nothing about writing. Not trying to be unkind or vilify him, but, boy howdy does my 12-year old with an SLD in written expression write better than that! 😅

Folks, I started this thread on June 1 last year, which seems a lifetime ago. I’m jubilant that my third DD’s college application process has wrapped up and we are moving into transition mode. I’m physically and psychologically clearing out all the clutter— tossing all the mail, purging the files, tidying the piles, deleting emails, unfollowing stuff on social media, etc. It feels so dang good! (I compare this to the post-baby maternity clothing bonfire I always fantasized about!)
She has about three weeks of classes remaining and two AP exams to take. She’s hip-deep in housing contracts, roommate-matching apps, study abroad plans, and a summer job search.
So here I’ll ask: who’s ready to END application season for the Class of ‘22???

My DD has made a college decision! She will be attending Michigan State University’s Honors College and School of Nursing in their direct-admit Nurse Scholar program. The excellent merit she received, paired with funded undergraduate research from the first semester, sealed the deal. The huge school, sports culture, Greek system, and opportunity to live near family again (after four years away at residential ballet school) were also factors in her decision.
I’m so relieved 🥲 that it’s over and I’m thrilled that we can roll-over her 529 to youngest DD and cash-flow her BSN since she picked such an affordable option! She’s going to begin her college experience with a first-year seminar abroad in Iceland before school starts at the end of August. I’m only a little jealous!

It's been a very long wait but dd has an excellent offer from Dalhousie for grad school. She loves the primary professor, so it's 99% sure though she is still waiting to hear back from King's in London. She's very happy.
Congratulations to her!

not at all! I don't know how he's going to decide. Columbus State and Baldwin Wallace are pretty deadlocked right now. We go back to Columbus State next week, so maybe that will offer clarity one way or the other. Really, the easiest thing would be for Oberlin to call tomorrow and offer him a spot (and good enough FA). They should just do that.
I hope they do!

He liked Vanderbilt, but didn't love it. Clarinet prof told him they're only taking TWO clarinets next year. So...maybe he doesn't need to worry about how much he likes Vanderbilt anyway.
So is he ready to make a decision?!

It really sounds like a situation where the only thing your daughter can control is how she reacts to and handles the situation; basically it is a problem of DD’s anxiety (not that her anxiety created the problem, but that her reaction is problematic to her).

Yeah, I’d have him prep/take the exams. If he isn’t happy with the scores, he doesn’t have to send/mention them. If he is, it could strengthen his application (but is definitely not necessary).

To this day it truly blows my mind that 20 minutes - one audition - can determine the life path of these students.
Still crossing my fingers for him, and I think it was smart to do the visit.
In a lot of ways, I much prefer this to the horribly nebulous, murky process that is holistic admissions!
I’ve recently described the current college admissions process to be like trying to buy a house (that you have no way of determining the price of until AFTER the sale goes through), but the catch is— you’re not sure exactly what the sellers even want, so you spent years gathering all the ‘documents’ (at great expense) that may or may not even sway the sellers to accept your offer. Ugh— I need a detox. A month at the beach with no internet. And lots of Sauvignon Blanc.

Improve on his Chinese, Japanese and German and camp out at the community college transfer center 😉
On a serious note, we are just taking each step at a time. I just checked the UC transfer planner and his community college coursework generated a GPA of 3.87 for 69.67 semester units/104.50 quarter units.
Your patience and good attitude astounds me. I think my hair would be on fire!

I didn’t even know waitlist/appeal essays were a thing, so I have absolutely no wisdom to share, just hugs. What a rotten situation for a terrific, hardworking kid to find himself in.

@GoodGrief3 Whew, what a process! Congratulations to your DD for finding what feels like a good fit and to you for finishing your homeschool journey! I’m just a little bit envious, both because my senior has not made a decision yet AND because I still have 5 more years of homeschooling ahead of my with 4th DD!
Actually, if I can keep in mind that she is a very different kid who needs a very different journey, it should be a pleasurable 8-12th grade for both of us. We definitely won’t be applying to tons of/competitive schools. She’s a brilliant people-person who would rather spend her days agility training dogs and riding & showing horses. School is drudgery for her, although we’ve remediated most of her learning challenges. She just plain isn’t interested. Get ‘r done will be the name of the game!

Article about cheating - something that high schoolers and college students should know about

Replying to question posed much earlier in the thread:
The primary reason that despite the nurse shortage in the US it is very difficult to get into a nursing program (whether ADN, BSN, or 2nd degree BSN) is this: accreditation requires that nursing clinical instruction maintain a 1:8 teacher-to-student ratio. This means it’s expensive and difficult to educate nurses. Even at a huge state university (40k undergraduates), the college of nursing might enroll only 60-80 students annually. There can be no 400 student lectures for nursing; it’s small-batch, largely hands-on instruction during the clinical phase.
