  1. I figured this board (with all of you wonderfully creative homeschoolers) would be the perfect place to ask! I need a very memorable, sweet way to tell my dad our babies name at the hospital. Our son will be named after him and we are keeping it secret until my dad meets him in the hospital. My daughter wants to be the one to do whatever it is we will do:) She is five so anything that she would be able to be involved in will be wonderful! Thank you!
  2. This is so great!! Thank you so much. We will be back from vacation in about 2 weeks and I will be definitely using this thread to plan ahead her lessons (since baby boy will be here before we start school.) I am so excited! Thank you to everyone. This advice was exactly what I was looking for!:)
  3. Thank you very much for the suggestions! I guess Im just wondering how much to do for each subject. If we study a country I know we can make food, read books, talk about the people there.. Im just wondering I guess how you know when you've covered something enough. Thanks so much!!:D
  4. Im going back in forth between curric like Galloping The Globe, Elemental Science, etc. We already have our main subjects planned--but for Science, History, etc I need advice on putting together your own lesson plans for your kindergartener. I originally wanted to buy a curric so that I wouldnt be able to mess anything up, or slack off.. but now Im thinking if I could plan ahead for these lessons this summer, it would sure save some $ to not have to purchase additional curric! So for fun subjects/topics.. what all do you include in your plans? Also how long do you typically spend on a subject? Any advice is appreciated!!
  5. When I first started reading up on homeschooling, I rented a copy from the library. I felt that the information was so important that I started taking notes... Half a NOTEBOOK later I decided I would have to buy a copy for myself:tongue_smilie:
  6. Alot of great advice, and I agree! Confront her about it. This is not okay behavior. Stand up for yourself and your child, and let her know her comments need to end. Sometimes the most simple advice would go a long way for people. "If you can't say something nice, then dont say anything at all." ;) I feel for you momma! So sorry that a family member has made you feel this way. I think some of the time public school teachers can be intimidated by homeschoolers. It may be a little threatening to their profession? (I said SOME not all.. I know a lot of supportive public school teachers that are just GREAT) :) Hope this situation gets better for you and your child!
  7. Great suggestions! Thank you! I dont have many stories about breastfeeding her since we were unable to do it for longer than a few weeks :/ I really think I will just start talking much more about when baby will be here.. and gradually work something in ;) Plus the Sesame St. videos and books will probably fuel her curiousity like crazy! Im sure the questions will start pouring in then! Which will be much easier! Thank you so much!
  8. ktgrok- Wow thank for for all of the links/help! We will definitely be using those! We dont watch much Sesame Street but she has seen it before so that will work wonderfully :)
  9. Exactly! I dont want to sit her down and explain it like its something different, its natural! But I didnt want to confuse/shock her either. She will ask questions but shes very shy about it. I know I will explain birth to her, I just dont think Im comfortable showing her videos just yet. :) Oh and Thank you! For any and every piece of advice! Its appreciated :)
  10. My dd is 5 and will have a baby brother in a few more months. As much as I can remember she hasn't been around many (if any) nursing mothers. She has started asking questions about how the baby will come out, since I told her he will probably be born differently than she was, (she was a C-section, she already knows what this is.) We will probably be discussing the "other way" here soon ;) But even with her natural curiosity, I doubt she will ask about breastfeeding. She has only known babies to be fed with bottles so I doubt she will ever think to ask anything else. Should I bring it up? And how? :) I dont want to just wait until hes here and start breastfeeding and have her be uncomfortable (shes a little shy about these things.) I want to be very open and discuss anything and everything with her, however we are pretty conservative. Any tips are appreciated:)
  11. hrigg Thank you so much! Wow. That will save some money! :) Im heading to check it out right now.
  12. Wonderful! I will most likely be purchasing the Intro to Science. I hope it works for both of us! Also, Congrats on the baby girl due in June!
  13. Ahh, Thank you so much for this thread! :lurk5:
  14. WOW! This same situation has happened to us! I am pregnant with our 2nd child and my dd is 5. I explained to her the way she was born (C-section) and since then she has said she doesnt want to get married and have babies. I ask why and she tells me, "because I dont wanna have the Doctor cut the baby out!" Well I thought that I had explained it much more.. pretty, than that. Lol. So my big mouth.. I tell her "Thats not the only way babies are born." Now she wants to know what this other way is. I'm too worried of telling her and scarring her even more! Lol.
  15. I am so excited to officially start dds K year! We started last year when she was 4 and it only lasted from Sept.-Nov. due to crazy circumstances. Since she was only four we decided to start officially this year at 5. I only schooled for a short time but I already learned a lot of lessons I will put into use this year. I can't wait! Plus we will have our newborn boy by then. Can't wait!
  16. BLA5 Thank you so much! That has really broken down the process for me and helped a ton! I also love to plan and I love Donna Young. I used her site and New Beginnings to make my own Homeschool Planner. LOVE IT! And I keep trying to remind myself that the WTM doesnt even suggest anything for a formal K program, so we are already doing more than needed. That helps me to relax. Thank you everyone, so much!
  17. Ahh thank you for the info! We wont have that much curriculum to buy so I guess I can spring for it ;) We were originally going to start K last year so I already have everything I KNOW Im using. I just need to decided on these Science/Social Studies programs!
  18. Also to Infomom, Did you need the resources with Elemental Science? I know that the Intro to Science requires 3, one being More Mudpies to Magnets. I was a little irked because I have the first Mudpies to Magnets but we havent even used it, so I hate to buy the second. Lol Just curious :) And thanks again to all of the replies. I am taking notes!
  19. This sounds exactly like me!! Which Elemental Science did you use? The Intro to Science? I hate to get all of that Curriculum and make Kindergarten too "heavy," I just feel like if we are going to do Science & S.S. I need some sort of plan. I too, get my planning energy in big sputs, not weekly doses! :)
  20. Wow! Thank you all so much. I will definitely be coming back from church and making notes from these great suggestions! So I think the consensus is to pretty much relax.. lol. I know this but its so hard not to get wrapped up in curriculum. :) I know that a lot more work will be added in first grade so I need to enjoy this year with her and just take a deep breath! BLA5 I am looking forward to reading your post! And Tanikit, Thank you for the added suggestions for homeschooling with a newborn! I live in a very small town, and although I have met a couple of great ladies through our Co-op, I am very thankful to be on this board. I have a lot of questions sometimes and it seems like there is no one to ask. I can't tell you how much I appreciate your help! Thank you again :)
  21. Congratulations!! He is beautiful! Thank God for being there and keeping you both safe!
  22. I have just started hearing of Abel. Its an A name, and its biblical? Im not much of a fan but the name we are considering is pretty different too;) I would ask for his opinion also :) Good luck!
