  1. haha, its not your fault I have not learned all the lingo yet but thank you for posting those links. I could not figure out what HO was! haha. I will take a look at these. As far as what era - I am flexible in that but I know my kids would love to learn about egytian history. I would like to teach them of the early america so really either of those I would be happy with.
  2. Okay, I need to go and see what these abbreviations mean. I am forum illiterate :) I will look into these. Thanks!
  3. I am at a loss - I am not sure what I want for our history or geography next year. I only do one or the other and so I need opinions on both. This is what I would like: *Some Christian influence but I dont want it to be totally about missions - something with a nice mix of religion and history. *Something multi level that would work for both 3rd and 6th grades. *Online program could be considered even if they each had to have their own level - something like abeka academy maybe? *We like hands on things to do whether thats reports, project/crafts. Any ideas?

  5. Hi everyone. My son is in 5th grade and we are trying to adjust to finding out about his dyslexia. Does anyone have experience with Lexia? Do you need to supplement with more things for reading/ language arts? Also what computer based curriculums do you all suggest for 6 th and 3rd grades?

  7. Wow ladies! This is much more response than I had expected to get! I am a little overwhelmed with all the information but Im going to take a look at all of these. Since we have not had him tested I dont know the severity but I know he has it! He fits so many of the signs and it really helped me to now understand him and how his mind is working. I think those of you that were saying a computer based program may be the key for him may be right. He already loves to use the computer and he is so visual that I think not having a text book in front of him may be really up his alley. Obviously he is going to need to learn to function with books in the "real" world so we cant take that out completely. I also really liked the idea of having books on tape that he could follow along with in a book. Im going to look into that for sure. Thank you so much for all the great links and ideas! I did call the school district here and they dont have anything for dyslexia only LD testing so I know that wont work for us - Im not surprised. Thank you again so much! Kristina
  8. Hi ladies. I have been concerned about my sons reading abilities for several years now. To take you back a little in K and 1st grade he went to public school. He was put into a special reading program which was a joke. I decided to pull him and homeschool him thinking I could do what they are doing only better. He was getting the same books for weeks on end and I would spend hours with him trying to help him in spelling and reading. After pulling him and homeschooling him his reading did go up and is much improved although not near level. He is currently in the 5th grade and I would say he is probably around the 3rd grade level. I have him on a 4th grade reading and language arts program- christian light. I am still shocked at his lack of ability to spell - even sight words. His reading while better in some ways has not improved in others such as - he still mixes up sight words like "when" for "then" and vis versa. He quickly looks at a word and then says what he thinks it is based on its shape. He misses about all vowels even though we have learned the phonics rules now for 3 years. His handwriting is terrible. He can only write about a paragraph at a time. If I try to get him to sound out a word its as if we never learned a phonics rule ... EVER! I was researching last night on the possability of dyslexia and after reading the signs of dyslexia he fits about every single point!! I had asked about dyslexia when he was in public school and they brushed it off saying they wouldnt even consider it as a possability till 3rd grade. Well, I am very certain that this is what is going on. He is extremely smart at math, loves art, loves history and science. We do our science and history together and they have no textbooks as I read to them and we do exeriements and projects. He loves English and can diagram a sentence like anyone BUT he can barely read. My daughter who is also homeschooled is in 2nd grade and is a bit advanced. She is about to pass him up in reading and spelling. What can I do to help him? I am going to call the school here and see if they test for dylexia - NOT a learning disability but actual, specific dyslexia. I also recently purchased sequential spelling 1 to see if my phonics spelling was just not working in his brain and maybe pattern spelling would - well, wouldnt you know that most kids with dyslexia cannot comprehend the phonics type of curriculum because of needing to be so patterned and visual - there goes 4 years of homeschooling work! He is loving the sequential spelling program so I think we are good there. Is anyone else working with a child that is dyslexic? What do you use to teach reading? Kristina
  9. Thankyou. I will take a look at that one! Anyone have experience with this one? http://www.homeschoolinthewoods.com/HTTA/TTS/ColonialLife.htm Biggest negative to me would be having to print all of that. The reviews are really good though.
  10. I need some suggestions. I recently purchased the Liberty kids DVDs and I would like to use them to incorporate our homeschool history next year. Does anyone know of a elem. level U.S. History curriculum that you would recommend? I need it to be 5th grade or under as I am combining our kids for this subject. Thanks~ Kristina
  11. Would you say that if I incorporated my apoligia science that I already bought for next year that it would be too much science? I have a soon to be 2nd and 5th grader and they love love the apologia science we had this year. It sounds like from you all say and what I have read that science is a little weak.
  12. Thats exactly my reasoning for being drawn to ECC. We did Christian light social studies this year and it was very much about geography and learning about cultures but it wasent indepth enough and I wanted more maps to work on, worksheets, projects etc. I am finding such a variance of those who love/hate it its making it hard to decide. I wish they had more detailed pictures of what the curriculum has to offer as well as samples!
  13. I need all the help I can get in deciding to use this or not! ANy info is appreciated! Thanks Kristina
  14. I was actually going to recommend CLE. Its what we use and LOVE!! We found it perfect in the amount of review and daily work!!
