X-post Homeschooling in Virginia Beach
calledtobehome replied to DawnUK's topic in K-8 Curriculum Board
Hi, I'm in VA just a couple cities over in Suffolk. I would also tell you to join the yahoo group the woman are very helpful. No they are not trying to make homeschooling illegal here! It seems pretty simple to me, the only thing you have to do is submit your NOI, and have your child tested if they are 6 by a certain date or you can have them evaluated. Check out the laws on these sites: http://www.vahomeschoolers.org/guide/ http://www.heav.org/index.html -
I am so glad that I didn't send by son to K in PS. I'm glad that my boys are best friends(they do fight at times) and love each other. They are 16 months apart and I'm glad that we have made the decision to keep them home as long as possible! I'm glad that I'm learning not to compare my kids with other kids! I'm glad we school 4 days a week and only have one activity outside the home for both boys together. I'm glad we have an awesome library and we use it obessively! My boys love books! Finally, Mom is happy to be learning again! :lol:I could go on and on

I don't know what happened here but it look like my question was posted twice! This post can be deleted!

Wow what great response! The question is- Did the OP want a text that concentrated on one topic or one that covered many topics but only one per chapter? I think I would like a math curriculum that covered many tiopics but only one per chapter! I'm also thinking about going to the convention in Richmond so I can actually see and handle the curriculum before I purchase.

Thanks for helping me with a few curriculum ideas for 1st grade math, you all are sooo awesome. I had to come back with another question! What math curriculums are Mastery? My husband would like me to get a Mastery type curriculum! Math u see I know is one, any others? This may be the one I'm leaning towards! Yolanda

I would like to thank everyone for their suggestions. The reason I didn't buy a curriculum for K math is because although I'm not great in math I was able to get a scope and sequence for K and we covered that and even some 1st grade math pretty well. I would like to go ahead and invest in somehting for this year coming up. My son will be 6 on Sat and I think this is a good time. Right now I think I'm going to look into: Math-u-see(I just read in Cathy Duffy that this may be a little behind)- Horizons-Singapore- and Rightstart. Thanks alot, I may be back with other questions.

I forgot to mention that I did look at Saxon at our local homeschool bookstore and I think it's a little to scipt for me if that make any sense.

If you the teacher were not good in math(yes that's me), what math curriculum would you suggest to start out with for a solid foundation for elementary starting at maybe 2nd or 3rd grade? I am not great at math but I have taught my son the basic K(some first grade math except for math facts). He turns 6 on Sat and I guess this is the time to start our facts? I was hoping to not buy a math curriculum until maybe 2nd or 3rd grade. We love reading living math books from the library and we have lots of manipulatives! Also how should I start teaching math facts? Thanks, Yolanda

My kids like this one as well! http://lightupyourbrain.com/audio-stories-for-children.html -
Thanks Wendy that really helped me alot, now I want both books:lol:. I'm trying not to purchase too many things that I don't really need or won't really use because my boys are still young, but it's so hard KWIM! I think I will use the WWE book and continue to do my own sheets on the computer for scripture.(thanks cookiemonster good idea). How does that sound?

Has anyone else enjoyed the Way Things Work Videos?
calledtobehome replied to lulubelle's topic in K-8 Curriculum Board
Yes my boys ages 4 and soon to be 6 loves these videos. We just watched Dams this week. We are going to continue to check them out at our library they have several! -
My son who is almost 4.5 years old is reading and I'm just assuming he started because he wanted to keep up with is soon to be 6 yr old brother. I did buy them the Leap Frog Dvd's(they are a hit at my house), I also allow him to get on starfall.com at least 3-4 times a week, he really likes the bob books and Hooked on Phonics K is also a hit!

What are you using for first grade?
calledtobehome replied to calledtobehome's topic in K-8 Curriculum Board
To give you more background. My boys are hands on they love to build, build, more building! They love science, and science experiments! My K son just started reading, we used Hooked on Phonics K so far along with bob books, Houghton Mifflin 1st grade learn to read series. He just finished the 1.1 book and we have 3 more books to complete first grade I think he is reading at a beg 1st grade level right now. I know we still have more phonics work to do! This is what I have in my mind so far but not sure yet: Phonics-Continue with Hooked on phonics 1st-2nd grade(I have this already) and Explode the code Math-? Math-u-see(maybe), we did a basic K math work book with manipulatives(abacus, tanagrams, cubes, clock, scale etc) Handwritng/Copywork-Writng with Ease Spelling-? Should I even start spelling at this time??? Science-Read and find out books, Bill Nye, Magic school bus books and dvd's, experiments, etc History-Story of the world book w/ cd's maybe the activity book Read good literature books from SL, BF, Ambleside, etc or MFW 1st -
I have two sons, K and pre-k. My K son turn 6 the end of January and I'm working on putting together his 1st grade curriculum. Here are some ideas, hopefully you can help me. Thanks

Since I have 2 boys the same age as yours I thougth I would let you know what work for us. Alternating from pencil/paper to dry erase board and markers, dry erase markers on kitchen window or any window(wipes right off), get a tray and pour sand or flour inside and form letters, use sidewalk chalk and draw and write on the sidewalk etc, hope this helps!

Any luck with hooked on phonics?
calledtobehome replied to 5kidsforME's topic in K-8 Curriculum Board
Although I'm new to homeschooling, so far my boys like HOP. My 5.5 yr old just finished the K deluxe set which comes with extra books and a cd-rom. I really like the way the cd-rom re-enforce the lessons. My 5.5 yr old is so amazed that he can read over 25 books now, Of course these are the books that come with the set. He also loved the sticker chart. Although I started out with the cd we don't use the cd much anymore. I really like the K set. It has good reviews from amazon and rainbow resources. I hope I like the first grade HOP as well. We also use Bob books, starfall, and Houghton Mifflin books. SO far so good. I stared my 4 yr old a few weeks ago and he like it as well. Trying to keep up with big brother I hope this helps! -
Thanks alot for taking the time out to answer my question. After looking at more reviews of HOP 1 people seem to think that it doesn't cover enough and will not take an entire year to complete. I think I'm going to get it for my son but also supplement with reading and buying maybe Phonics Pathways or another book that teaches phonics to have as a guide. He is looking forward to moving up the next level if we don't have any problems it will be in Dec. Thanks

I'm using Hooked on Phonics K with bob books and Houghton Mifflin Reading books for my 5.5. What would you suggest to use next? Should I go to HOP 1st grade or something different? The HOP K is great for him but the reviews on 1st grade isn't as great. Thanks
