  2. I think that they should have to stand for it, but that's me. I also think that it's deplorable that Obama doesn't pledge to the flag and he is running for president. That one leaves me scratching my head. I am sorry but that is not the case the photo was taken during the singing of the Star Spangled Banner -hand over heart not needed. http://blog.washingtonpost.com/fact-checker/2007/11/obama_nabbed_by_the_patriotic.html As the link shows this rumor is false.
  3. http://cabinetrescue.com/_wsn/page5.html I have no idea what is in this but it appears to be formulated especially for pesky melamine surfaces-who knew??Best of luck on your project- have you considered a mural on the sides of the bookcase to pretty it up rather than repainting the whole thing?? I have often thought about freehand drawing then painting with oil the scene from The Lion , The Witch and The Wardrobe where Mr Tumnus is standing beside the lamp post the first time Lucy goes into Narnia. I chicken out because although I have great ideas I am daunted by the execution thereof at times. Perhaps you could do this rather than repainting the darn thing.
  4. http://www.liquitex.com/Products/surfprepgesso.cfm i painted 1950s formica topped bedroom furniture with this as a baase and holy smokes-it had to rest for a few days byt that paint wears like iron due to the primer of gesso!!It is pure white but wow what a primer. I hung out with our wallpaper guys and picked up a few tricks-this is one of the best. Also you should get 1000grit sandpaper to smooth between coats.
  5. http://www.amazon.com/Your-Mothers-Slow-Cooker-Cookbook/dp/1558322450 This is amazing the best cookbook I own and it is easy and there are no recipes using cr of mushroom soup. BTW I cooked only Food and Wine/Bon Appetit recipes before having a child and hsing and these are really wonderful with lots of fresh veggies etc and flavor . I serve things from this book for dinner parties etc as well as for everyday meals. I heard about it here and fell in love with it.
  6. JMRoberts Illustrated History of the World is amazing. EF Gombrich is too short but charming and well written.I hunted the Roberts volumes down through alibris and bought a whole set for 35.00.http://www.alibris.com/landingpage/usedbooks?S=R&mkwid=020608cst2226990&siteID=NcYTag.a_sQ-6oUMLY6cT4gb7WSWezrrRQ
  7. I am also very concerned about a false sense of security -there are many other STD's that can only be prevented by barrier B control. Treating Hpv is hellish and often requires laser surgery but I remain concerned about long term effects as well. I really feel uneasy without a longitudinal study regarding the efficacy of the vaccine and the plethora of other deadly and painful diseases that can only be prevented by barrier birth control remain far more of a concern to me. Unfortunately in our practice (law ssd and work comp)we are seeing a lot of hepatitis and HIV-it breaks my heart.
  8. You are darling!! You made my night. You will survive ,my torture comes next week with her sister the wicked witch of the westfor a nice 7 day long visit but they are staying elsewhere. I feel you pain really I do.
  9. Freethinkers by S. Jacoby, Silver Swan by Benjamin Black,An Irish Country Doctor by Patrick Taylor and Silence by Shusaku Endo. I plan on reading The Serpent's Tale by Ariana Franklin. I loved Mistress of the Art of Death as it was such interesting fiction-science, anti semitism, apostasy , forensics- cannot be beat for a great cuddle up novel. Silence is highly recommended for a reader that enjoys philosophical and ethical quandries. I am listening to ...I Am Legend by R. Matheson . Yeah, that one, the vampirism as viral contagion story. What can I say ? I enjoy everything from Hegel to Stephen King and all the writers in between.
  10. http://www.cnn.com/2008/CRIME/04/28/polygamist.retreat.ap/index.html Very unfortunate. It would appear that this went beyond one incident as previously believed.
  11. http://www.thesmokinggun.com/archive/years/2008/0410081polygamy1.html the second warrant after the calls were brought into question. It may eventually come out that what was discovered via the raid is not admissable due to a faulty warrant(based on a falsehood) or not in plain view nor listed on the warrant. Who knows?? There is no video of the alleged acts . Straw man
  12. http://www.thesmokinggun.com/archive/years/2008/0410081polygamy1.html the warrant is here not the evidence etc that comprised the warrant that is still sealed.
  13. I am speaking about the federal warrant. No arrests- just wait a bit longer. It takes a guardian ad litem for each child to be appointed then there is a great deal of back and forth between the state attorneys, the parents attorneys(we of course do not know who the parents are since they are hiding parentage-odd-) and cps. It is a logistical nightmare.Until there is dna and forensic psychological testing we know nothing of any real import. Search findlaw for better info regarding what is needed for a search warrant. It was not likely based on a phone call used as a pretext to raid the ranch which seems to be the upshot of your position. http://news.lp.findlaw.com/ap/other/1110//04-18-2008/20080418015006_22.html Of course there have been no arrests yet read the article in the link they are not exactly cooperating-they are obfuscating, pandering to the segment of the population who might have sympathy for their "cause" and doing nothing to protect those children. These are not merely abstract principles at stake but young innocent lives ,an ounce of caution is certainly warranted. I too hope the govt used an ounce of caution when the judge signed the warrant permitting the raid, truly I do.
  14. Charon and others who think this was a case of religious persecution as a lawyer I would like to share one salient fact with you regarding evidence and minors...it cannot be discussed. The basis for the warrant in its particulars cannot be discussed . It may come to light that in fact the judge who signed the order permitting law enforcement and cps to raid the property did so on only one allegation from one complainant. I doubt it but it could be. We will not hear the particulars re:the corroborating evidence, the forensic evidence which will likely reveal incest etc as this is a highly closed community. It shows how pundits pretend to know the facts and it is nothing more than an educated guess until the particulars come out. In many cases until there are charges filed and a response from a defendant on those charges the public is in the dark when minors are involved to protect the child's privacy and to avoid tainting testimony or destroying evidence. It is sad beyond belief - all of it.As a woman and mother ,I think it is about power and sex and control-it always is.
  15. http://www.cnn.com/2008/US/04/17/polygamy.pentagon/index.html I found this interesting and horrifying. One thing I am not is surprised.
  16. Survivor of 2 suicides in the immediate family. Please read these 2 books if you can find them at your library and bookstore to become aware of the whys of suicide and help you understand that it is almost a certainty that there is nothing , nothing , nothing you could have done to stop this. These books literally saved my sanity. Darkness Visible by Styron and Dr Kay Jamison's book , Night Falls Fast. I am so sorry for you and your lovely family. Please read these books in order to make some sense out of this tragedy . Peace to you.
  17. We are using JMRoberts Illustrated History of the World it is fairly challenging reading but what a beautiful set of books ...Found through alibris and powells books. I am also using Jensen's Format Writing with brief research assignments on various topics as TWTM suggests. We are hitting the early moderns again this fall and plan to listen to Philbrick's Mayflower and Roanoke the lost colony as well. I do not like 1776 by Mccullough as the narrator annoys me for some reason. Anyway, that is the plan for Early Moderns. Modern history we will use the same spine with lots of books by Jacob Riis, Howard Zinn and other favourite history authors. I enjoy planning this way too much...If you need an online source for extra materials ,posters ,texts etc go to http://www.socialstudies.comhttp://socialstudies.com/
  18. Have your student read Aristotle's Poetics and contrast with Northrop Frye. Those are the two most important theoretical bases from which it seems all other criticism flows from. How to Read A Book by Adler is helpful as a general guide for analyzing /understanding different types of text. In my experience Aristotle is the place to begin-even post modern deconstructionist literary critics owe a debt to Aristotle.

  20. Story of the World by our board host Susan Wise Bauer is an excellent history source. You cannot go wrong with The Well Trained Mind for suggestions for every subject and the book lists are amazing. Frankly her book convinced dh that hsing was the correct course for our highly accelerated learner who is still a precocious reader. If you have 4 children the book is a goldmine and will be a great investment. Have fun-I love designing schedules, selecting books, writing lesson plans etc can you tell I love hsing???
  21. Vodka ladies-it cleans the board spotless and will not hurt it. Buy the cheap stuff-dh was most annoyed when he discovered that his Grey Goose vodka was being used to clean the board. It really works like a charm and no odor either...
  22. As a balance to Patriots history may I suggest Howard Zinn's A People's History of the United States? It is fascinating told from the perspective of the oppressed ,powerless and disenfranchised. I really enjoyed the point of view and the writing is terrific. Also I must say that Paul Johnson's book is superb in many respects.
  23. I hope dd will attend there as well. Dh also attended law school there and then earned a LLM in Taxation-blah!!Not my favorite subject in law school he thinks it is fascinating...
  24. A few more suggestions. Spin by Wilson is an amazing novel and won several awards...post apocalyptic(sp?) great writing and character driven rather than plot driven. World Made by Hand by Kunstler is brand new just finished wow-heavy stuff- maybe just for mom. Bradbury is one of my favorites and a must read IMHO ,From the Dust Returned. If your young man has taken Latin then A Canticle for Leibowitz by Walter Miller is a treat. IF he likes fantasy and comedy Terry Pratchett's Discworld series is superb as well. Off to B and Noble to pick up another classic of the genre for myself , one that I missed , Terry Brooks' Sword of Shannara . Try also Earth Abides by George Stewart-masterful and fairly old thus less likely to offend with regard to language.I have a dd that loves to read and is a skilled reader but I try to avoid excessvely coarse language as it disturbs her . I think you are a really great hser and even better mama to foster your son's interests this way. I hope you find some works that fit the bill. Happy hunting!
  25. We are using Jacobs Algebra after 6 years of singapore math it is a welcome change and dd 11 is delighted. Lials college math or Jacobs general math book might be the ticket. I cannot think of the name of the general Jacobs text but know many good mathematicians on this board have used it with great success. I get tired just keeping up with her but we are shifting into abstract thought coupled with puberty and well ,maybe giving up all intoxicating vices many years ago was not such a great concept... I have also read here that many use Gelfands algebra I think from Amazon. Way too mathy for this attorney, if I could do math that well I would not have gone to law school folks it would be an MD for certain. Check those out and I will seek the title of the Jacobs book that is escaping my mind at the moment.
