  1. It depends on the local chapter if they are nice, interesting and curious about everything then yes. The local here had as much warmth and spark as a dead carp.
  2. So long as you are willing to share your recipe it's all good. And why praytell do you enjoy mead??? Nice to meet you.
  3. After the first acceptance you will be in a better state of mind. This has been far more stressful than law school EVER was. I feel your angst. Thank goodness for Nestle, Hershey and the fine monks that make Benedictine for my evening coffee. It fights colds and such... Honestly you will make it, we will all be ok. Just keep the chocolate handy and treasure this last year of home educating with your child, precious time indeed. No one ever told me how special this journey would be nor where it might lead. So enjoy and savor this time you did a fine job!!
  4. Great article about a really wonderful lady and her family. I never could have done it without her as we are largely secular in our home and her suggestions were invaluable. I think it was a fantastic article!!
  5. Taking dinner to my husband ,a poll watcher. I will be running numbers to and fro as precinct captain and making sure everyone gets out to vote!
  6. Me too. That is the closest I have felt to normal in years. The side effects of grumpiness, weight gain and hostility(beyond my usual) were worth it to walk again. RA is evil.
  7. I am in communication with the TAG coordinator who is very aware of the ethical, legal and moral implications. And to all who posted, thank you so much for sharing your outrage. Sometimes I think I am the one whose perceptions are off. FTR dd already took the test and earned what she needed. This was just a retake for two points but by gosh those two points are the difference between a nice merit scholarship and a full ride. The woman with whom I was discussing this and who was in charge of the exam and the head counselor at the school, kept twiddling her thumbs the entire time. She is well aware that I will take exception with the methodology and planning. I felt dirty and sick to my stomach while speaking to her. My senses are well attuned to deception from years of practicing law, I can spot bs a mile off and let me say I was ready to pull on the high waders because I was up to my waist in horsepucky. I will continue to share what transpires. Mostly this just makes me angry and sad. What an example for those young people.
  8. Absolutely if it does not fall under academics in a public/private school setting then it is fine. You can always call to inquire as well. I am a champion at this point of just calling as it is too hard to ascertain the why of a "rule," in order to bend it. I just call and ask.
  9. Drives me insane. Just put on your flame proof suit and say exactly what you mean. To he** with it. It is very passive aggressive and I prefer out and out brawling at least it is honest.
  10. The simple fact is that this is a political thread and likely not in line with the board rules. Just a silly idea of miine to respect the rules of the house since we are all guests.
  11. Grotesque and might I add, inappropriate and unprofessional. I swear they get these clowns from the same place and just move them around from one school to the next. Her behaviour was nearly might I say intentional ...you have two weeks from the test date to report any and all testing irregularities. I have a problem with the interruptions from her phone and the loud eating and drinking especially if the extra time if for an auditory processing delay. What on earth gets into some people to be so thoughtless of others on such a stressful day ?
  12. Congratulations to both you and your daughter!! I have no experience with the school but think it a fine name. Invited to join Honors program at college/uni is a wonderful validation of your daughter's abilities and effort. I tip my hat to you both.
  13. Today was a test day for the ACT. The high school where dd took the exam had algebra posters all over the walls and rules for inequalities, some geometry and the like. She did not look closely as she did not need to nor did she want to even possibly considered a cheat. Sadly the proctor was knitting away and texting while the young men in front of her discussed their answers. She already hit her mark on the SAT this was just another exam to buttress those results. I am ill. Does lack of honor extend to the Superintendent who vowed to "raise the ACT scores," two months ago...the possibilities are grotesque. And they started at 8:15 after the kids were told to be there at 7:30. They stood around doing nothing while the head guidance counselour ran about seeking a custodian to unlock the classrooms where the exams HAD to be given. Something stinks to high heaven here. Why on earth could they not have simply used the cafeteria?? No posters all over the walls?
  14. Prayers and candles will be set for her. Your love and abiding friendship mean so very much . I am sorry to hear of her troubles.
  15. My grandparents loved to square dance and delighted in the friendships made there. She was quite the seamstress and handmade many of her beautiful outfits. I thought these ensembles were creative.
  16. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Qn5jbUjpwjY My contribution to the kilt collection. Would you expect any less?? What a day. Far too serious here!
  17. Form over substance, slavish mindset. MIT is terrific but not the only game in town. Guess they will learn that the hard way. Columbia is the bane of my existence for much the same reason. It is dismaying to see so many of the highly selective schools asking for SAT II scores and refusing to accept AP exam scores. I have theories about this bizarre practice some of which I have hinted at in my posts but my relative who is on the Admissions Committee at Stanford does not have an answer either as to the preference . Heck we might end up in New Orleans after all. Loyola here we come...and the music scene for a highly skilled guitarist is simply awesome in breadth. It seems petty and simply questionable as to the reasons or lack thereof for this goofy dependence on SAT II vs AP exams. Who knows??
  18. Follow up statement about the Common App. It is lazy and promotes the same, we did not use it unless the college /uni demanded it and it actually is horrific for home educated applicants as much of it is ridiculous like the counselor form. Idiotic is the kindest phrase that comes to mind. It was akin to being trapped in Satan's *ss for months. Example of said stench if you try to upload comments and check the teacher box you are stuck in limbo for hours. There are no phone numbers, only email contacts and as I stated in my previous post it is crucial to have a book list so the person who is used to reading the preprogrammed lists of courses can actually fathom why 2.0 credits were issued for a Literature class. Read my book list and then it makes abundant sense and they want to admit my child out of a sense of giving the kid a break. 6000 pages per course is not unheard of around here.I have a highly capable student indeed but no moss grew under her feet either. The highlight so far has been the unnamed Ivy that flat out declared that no one could do that much work. Yes I suppose that would be true as I have seen what you have produced was my answer...I will not answer their calls. And I am, for the record, an elitist snob of the worst sort with regard to education but they pissed this Iowa lady off by suggesting the book list was" impossible." The others have been amazing and helpful thus far. It is amusing that they require SAT subject tests but not AP exams. That is akin to having a student read a comic book version of King Lear and stating that Shakespeare was not a valid substitute. And yes I am saying the SAT subject tests are simple. I took three of them online while drinking wine and missed 3 questions. In courses I studied 25 years ago. Try writing an essay on the same material and it is time to put on the high waders because you are soon knee high in geese droppings. There is no reason for using SAT subject tests and not AP exams that is apparent to me and my conjecture is most unkind. LEGACIES. None too bright but mumsy and popsy do donate huge sums of money to the alma mater...If any one can think of another reason for this anomaly please share your speculations as it makes little sense to me other than to level the field for wealthy but average students to compete against those who might not be wealthy but are brilliant. After all we cannot have legacy students appearing to be unqualified as we need the endowments to keep coming in and if we do not accept Henrietta the million a year her parents are sending to X University will promptly come to an end. Sad but true I fear.
  19. No way would I even consider an application complete for a home educated student without a plethora of supporting materials to validate our transcript. We did the Common App online utilized it to the extent it was pertinent and then sent detailed transcripts with book lists, grading scale and work required therein, report cards, midterm papers, SAT scores, AP scores, PSAT scores and ACT scores. We also wrote a mission statement, my daughter wrote an essay on her home education experience and we enclosed two sheets on extracurriculars. Any supplemental essays required by individual colleges were completed online. So far, so good. The applications that we were sent which were free online remained so other than the cost of mailing the documents. A quick phone call helps and frankly they are pleased to see effort, commitment and external validations of the transcript that is merely a page with grades and subjects. I have heard from more than one uni that they wish they had that much information about other applicants.
  20. Steroids absolutely alter the metabolism so much it is nearly cruel to try to make her lose sweight. I gained 60 lbs on 10 mg per day within 9 months. I ate no more than 1800 calories per day. Now that I am down to 5 mg per day I lost 20 lbs effortlessly. Please research the meds and talk to her MD about titrating her down and you will be amazed how quickly the weight will come off. How very hard for all of you to deal with severe health challenges in a little one. She will come into her own after the steroids are reduced.
  21. University of Chicago and Wellesley. Barnard has the most beautiful mailings. We knew she hit the number when those booklets came. The paper alone must have been 10.00 My sister works in the field of marketing and publishing and was most impressed with the quality of the work!! Chicago is relentless. We are hoping for a great scholarship from my alma mater.
  22. AP exams are tough and the courses might well be taught by those not qualified to teach them but many parents/students do not care about the test scores as they should. Taking the class is one thing doing well on the exam is entirely another matter. The SAT subject tests are so easy it is shameful that the Ivies use them instead of AP test scores. I leave you to draw your own conclusions as to the purpose behind that...I say legacy admissions and some none too bright candidates who text and can no longer write or spell worth a darn. Just my 2 cents. I did take Latin, Biology, World History and Composition SAT subject practice tests. I missed 3 while gorked on pain meds for knee replacement surgery. A potato can score well on SAT subject tests. Not so on AP. You have to write quickly, legibly and succinctly as well as answer very difficult multiple choice questions. The students who have a great instructor will fare well on AP exams and those that do not will fail to pass.
  23. Please know that it is glaringly obvious. We have found that many, many schools are not interested in the SAT Writing section due to the fact that it is not one in which the children of the" powers that be" can carry off on their own. My cousin sits on the admissions committee at Stanford and has informed me that they look for incongruity between the essays and the transcript records and grades earned. Frankly speaking if your child cannot write a decent essay they ought not attend uni yet. It is expected and mandatory for exams and papers. The dishonesty in one area of life is so easy to leak into the rest of one's life. To me it is not worth setting a horrible example for my daughter. To prove the point, in my first year of law school we were told of the honor code. To violate the code one only need observe cheating and fail to report it. If you violate the code you are out as well as the perpetrator. Straight A student cheated on ETHICS multiple choice exam and was reported per honor code rule. He was not permitted to come back until the next year. His cronies spent a good 6 months calling the students who followed the rules horrid names, putting up mock ups in the law school newspaper demeaning the physical features of the students who had reported the cheating and so forth. One of the students is suspended from the California bar and the other is a Federal District Court Judge. I will venture you can guess where the cheat is in this scenario. He never learned his lesson. Realize that you are teaching other lessons than how to write a good essay to get into uni/college and proceed accordingly.
