  1. :iagree: MM is EXCELLENT in teaching fractions!! My oldest son was having such a terrible time. I purchased the Fractions 1 & 2....life saver!! He is breezing through now!
  2. A very short post but we had a fun experience today that I included.
  3. Oh we love it here too!! My k'ner reading is really taking off. Phonics was my number one fear when we started homeschooling (pulled my oldest out after 4th grade). I was terrified I'd mess up with the littles but OPG makes it SO easy to teach!
  4. My oldest was really struggling with fractions last and this year. I put it off last year, thinking he would pick it up this year. That didn't work. I finally purchased the Math Mammoth Fractions workbook. He is doing SO much better with fractions now!! You can find samples on the right side of the website.
  5. Ours is up but very short and boring due to my lack of concentration because of these seasonal allergies plaguing me and lack of pictures. We really didn't accomplish much in the way of schoolwork either. Kind of a bum week, I'd say. :D
  6. AR is a pretty easy state. We have to submit a letter of intent every August. If a parent wishes to pull a child from public school during a semester, there is a two week wait after submitting the paperwork. Also grades 3-8 have to take the IOWA standardized testing which must be administered by someone with a degree. There are several free testing sites all over the state. We test with our homeschool group.
  7. We are throwing out Saxon K-3. I just can't stand it anymore. I love, love, love 54 and above but the lower grades drive me insane. We are switching to MM. The Homeschool Buyers Co-op has a great deal on the MM sets right now!! I have used MM Fractions with my oldest and really love it! I don't know if I'll use another math to supplement yet. I'm waiting to start my 5 yr old on MM and see how it goes first. If he does well enough with just MM, we'll only supplement with some fun math games and living math books.
  8. After not blogging for a couple weeks, I'm finally caught up!! :001_smile:
  9. We just finished Astronomy and didn't do many of the experiements. We learned a lot just by reading the book and supplementing a little with YouTube videos, the book extras on the website, notebooking pages, and a couple library books. We're going to start Botany in a week or so. We'll probably do more of the experiments. It's almost spring here so we're taking advantage. I did purchase the notebook journal for Botany, mostly to see what all the fuss was about. I think it's ok. Nothing incredibly awesome or must have, imo, though.
  10. Video Stream We've been watching this afternoon. We saw two eggs.
  11. http://www.sportsmansparadiseonline.com/Live_Owl_Nest_Box_Cam.html This is SO cool!! We've been watching for a while now. Can't wait to see the babies!!!
  12. I think so, and I'm afraid it has carried over into age 12 too (for my ds anyway). We are also pretty lenient parents. I'm just asking for respect and kindness. I'd love to hear some tips from experienced moms!!
  13. Is there something you could offer for him to work toward earning? Maybe an evening out with Mom or Dad, dinner and a movie? Could he earn an mp3 player? Or maybe bowling or skating with a friend from church and Mom or Dad? Maybe he just needs some incentive. I saw that you have some good acreage. Do they get out and run around exploring by themselves? Even during cold snowy weather, can they bundle up and throw snowballs at each other, build a snowman, build a snow fort if you have enough snow? My 12 yr old has to get out in the wide open every day even in the nasty weather sometimes. He just has to clean off his shoes and drop his dirty clothes into the washer before heading for the shower afterwards. Maybe drop them off at the library while you go grocery shopping? Or maybe if you take a while shopping even drop them off at the bowling alley for a game, skating rink, or arcade? Another thing we try to do here (I understand having a traveling husband and working around his schedule) is have a night that each child get some one-on-one time with one or both parents. Even if it's just a trip to the park, library, or an ice cream cone just for a couple hours. One of my kids loves to go grocery shopping with me by himself! If my boys feel closer to me, they behave so much better it seems.
  14. Thank you Kareni. Our local colleges consider one semester (two quarters?) of Comp as one high school English credit so that would work I think. I agree with you. I wouldn't count one quarter as a full high school credit. I didn't realize some colleges do that. I have only checked into the colleges local to us. Thank you for bringing that to my attention!
  15. Oh yes! That really does help and makes sense now!! I went to a very small school (22 graduates in my class) and didn't have lit classes. We had 9th grade English, 10th grade English, 11th grade English, and 12th grade English. :D I was talking to my niece who goes to a HUGE public high school and she was talking about her world lit class. I wondered where that fit in the credit list. (duh...makes sense now that you've spelled it out for me!!) Great! I will worry no more about it then!! I like the chronological idea too. Thank you SO much!!
  16. I have similar issues with my 12 yr old son. He has a diagnoses of ADHD with ODD tendencies so sometimes I'm not sure what are typical hormones or ODD issues. However.... I have also started praising him more. Sometimes I secretly set him up for something I know he'll do well just so I CAN praise. I praise excellent school work, good effort, accomplished goals, playing nicely with his little brothers, helping out his little brothers, etc. I thank him for being respectful and polite. I praise him to others in his presence too. Grandparents, aunts, and uncles are good for that and it isn't be too embarrassing for him. Plus they get the chance to love on him and show how pleased they are with him too. I also try to pick my battles with him and give him a little more freedom. Of course with freedom comes responsibility. We live in a very small town so he gets to take little trips by himself to the library. Sometimes I'll send him to the small local store for a couple errands and give him an extra dollar or two to get himself a snack or drink. He can leave the yard to play with his friends while his little brothers aren't old enough for that yet. Another big thing that I think is important is to show a LOT of love for him. Believe me, I know how frustrating a 12/13 yr old son can be. We have had many struggles and I know how it feels to not like your own child because I've been there too. I think jadedone80 is right though.... So I make sure to tell him and show him how much I love him....every *good* time for sure and even during the *bad* times. I have noticed some good changes in him. It seems he is trying harder to earn my praise (good attention) than misbehaving for bad attention. He is far from perfect and so am I. We're working on it though...a little by little. One other thing I wanted to add. We have have consequences for bad behavior. Screen time, playtime with neighbors friends, mp3 player etc. One thing I've changed is the time he is grounded from those things. I used to ground him from his DS or mp3 player for a week. I've started only taking it away for a day or two. That seems to work better. He kind of developed the attitude of why try this week because my things are all gone anyway? Usually I say "you're grounded from your DS. If you're behavior improves for the rest of this day, you can have it back tomorrow morning." He knows if he doesn't straighten up, he'll lose it for another day. Then if he's lost it for the next day AND misbehaves again, I take away something else for the day. He has about four things that are very important to him and I have had to take all four away in one day, but I think I've only done that once or twice since shortening the grounding time. He wants his things with him and he knows how to earn them back quickly so he pays more attention to his behavior. :grouphug:
  17. Hi! I have a rising 7th grader and was thinking ahead this afternoon. I have just a couple questions if you don't mind about graduation credits. I'm just mostly trying to get this straight in my head. :D Our state's graduation requirements are 4 credits for English, math, science, and history. The last three are a piece of cake. I have concerns about English though. My oldest will finish R&S English 8 in the 9th grade. First question...can I count that as a credit since it's 8th grade? Should I skip it and move on to something else for 9th? Second question....the plan in my mind was to be finished with grammar after R&S English 8. Obviously that won't work. I'm pretty sure (need to double check) that college comp 1 and 2 are both considered 2 full high school credits here. He can take those at the local college. So there are two of the four. If I can count R&S 8, that's three. I'll need one or possible two more credits. What are some options for two high school English credits? Thank you!!

  19. We use OPG and sometimes PP. My 5 yr old loves OPG and loves reading the stories. If he struggles with something, I find it in PP for some extra practice. He doesn't like reading just lists of words though. He prefers OPG. I love OPG too. My only complaint is the font style for the capital I is the same for the lower case l. Can't stand that. My ds gets confused sometimes when words that start with I begin the sentence (is, it etc).
  20. Here is a quote from Jeannie Fulbright on Botany: And another as she answered a question about order with a 7 yr old boy: We are finishing up Astronomy this week and will start Botany in a couple weeks so we can get that first hard lesson completed in time for our gardening season.
  21. Here is a link to the store. Human Odyssey links are about half way down the page under the subject and grade lists.
