  1. Thank you for the responses! I think we'll give this a try! :). Do you all find the lapbook material useful or just purchase the student/teacher materials?
  2. Thank you for the links! I noticed in your signatures that one of you have your children using the different levels and one uses just one level. I was thinking about just sticking with my 3rd grader's level for all three of my younger children (3rd, 1st, and pk). I will already have one high schooler doing his own thing plus a newborn so I'm thinking using only one level with the littles would make life easier. OR should I have them do their own level?
  3. Anyone use this? What is your experience? I found the website but not any sample pages or prices for 3rd grade Chemistry . I'd like to check it out if anyone has a link. Thanks!
  4. Here is our week! Daisy, your blog posts have quickly become some of my favorites to read! I always look forward to seeing how your week has gone! :)
  5. What do you think? Oh I didn't include PE but all of my boys participate in organized sports and we'll be adding gymnastics for the younger three soon. :) Thanks!
  6. Due to where we started in history (before reading WTM), my first rising 9th grader won't be in line with the WTM. We'll use the book lists from WTM for the 1600-1850 time period but I can't decide what to use as a spine. My littles will be using SOTW but I would like something more for him. Any suggestions? Thanks!
  7. Better late than never? More of a month in review with pics!
  8. My husband was diagnosed with Type II this past May. His sugar was in the upper 200's with spikes over 300. He asked the doctor if he could try to take care of it himself before trying meds to control it. He found Mark's Daily Apple blogspot in a search and started reading. He followed the Primal Diet and in just one month his sugar was down in the upper 100's. By the next month is was in the mid 100's, and by August it was low enough that he stopped testing every day. Now he only tests occasionally, mostly out of curiousity. Everytime it has been under 120. The diet literally changed his life! I'm a runner and he tried to run with me on several occasions but always quit. He started running again in August and will compete in his first 5K this April!! He credits that diet for everything! It's healthy. It's fullfilling. AND it helped him not only lower his sugar but he has lost over 60 lbs. On a checkup with the doctor in July, the doctor sat him down and asked "what are you doing? Because I need to tell my other diabetic patients!" The doctor was amazed by the results and supported his decision to take no meds. It is definitely worth a try!! And you won't have to worry about a doctor. My husband went to a pharmacy before he got the equipment to test his own sugar, and asked the pharmacist if he could test him. He did. A lot of the pharmacies will test your sugar for you if you ask. That way you can see results.
  9. I had it in college. PAINFUL! ER dr gave me a breathing treatment and a shot for the pain and sent me home with a script for Tylenol 3. It stinks! ugh! Feel better!! :grouphug:
  10. This week flew and was full of *other* stuff by so we didn't get near as much done as I planned but we did manage a little.
  11. I think we're FINALLY back in our groove! http://monkeyhomeschool.blogspot.com/2012/01/weekly-update-see-were-getting-back-in.html
  12. I think I'm going to use this system for history, arts/crafts, and geography (the three subjects that need the most prep work and were dropped most often each week this year). Maybe if I have everything ready to go, we'll get more of each accomplished each week. We use the workbox system and usually we just do one lesson from the other subjects a day so I don't see a need to cut up those books. I like the idea of paperclipping a notecard to each file folder with a book list on one side and materials list on the other. Easy to grab the week before and have ready.
  13. For the most part, we just use the book with my 1st grader. Sometimes, if needed, we do the enrichment part (games, writing, etc) but mostly we just follow the book. Sometimes we've stayed with a few lessons for a few days and others we've breezed through. Also sometimes I go back to those lessons where my son struggled for review. You can also make your own flash cards if needed. I did, at one point, just type up the most troublesome words (and a few easy ones for a confidence boost), printed them, cut into small cards and hung them on a book ring. We reviewed them occasionally. Some days we didn't do a lesson but just reviewed the cards on the ring. My 1st grader is reading on about about a 3rd grade level now and we are 4/5 of the way through the book. I'm starting over with my preschooler now and thinking maybe some flash cards (for the words, not letters) would help him.
  14. Hi! I'm looking at Apologia's Who is God? and would like to hear any reviews. I have looked through the sample lesson and it seems to be what I'm looking for--discussion questions, journaling opportunities, bible-centered (a good portion of the questions/activites actually based on the bible and not on the book itself). Also I like the age span, and wonder if it actually can work in a family setting of many ages. I read the table of contents and would love to have a study that actually children find the answers to the questions. What about the notebook? Necessary? Helpful? Waste of money? Any thoughts? Thank you!
  15. My 7th grader will finish up 76 in a few weeks. I'm not sure if he should then go into 87 or Algebra 1/2. He has done very well with 76, mostly independent without any real struggles. We have 87 already so I wonder if it is much different than Algebra 1/2 and if he will miss something going from 87 to Algebra. I don't mind at all purchasing Algebra 1/2 if it is better than 87. Can anyone compare the two for me? Thank you so much!
  16. You might try the sample pages at Math Mammoth. Just click on FREE STUFF! at the top of the page and follow the instructions. We LOVE MM for so many different reasons, but one big reason is the way it makes a child think. I actually was just getting on the forums to brag on MM because it is working so well with my ds.
  17. Hi ladies! I need a little help. I had my 8 weeks of co-op classes planned and ready to go...on my laptop, not printed. Then my laptop crashed!! While it is getting fixed, I need some help for one of my co-op classes coming up this Friday. I am doing a story + art class with ages 3-5. Last week we read The Rainbow Fish (sharing) and did a fun fish craft. Now I am looking for another book on pretty much any character trait for my class. I wrote my plans out over a month ago and seriously cannot remember the other books on my list. So......book suggestions? I'm sure I can come up with a craft for just about any book. Thanks SO much!!
  18. My husband was in the military.....so even after 10 years of marriage, he still ma'ams me....and his mom....and my mom...and my sisters....and our dil...and any other female who speaks to him. He also says sir to pretty much the same extent. I've even heard him say "yes sir" to on of our boys when responding to a question. :001_smile: I don't mind it. I understand it is a matter of respect, not age (obviously our dil is younger than us and both of my sisters are younger than him). Our boys also use ma'am and sir when responding to any adult (well they're suppose to anyway...sometimes they forget). When someone calls to them, I think it just sounds nicer to say "yes ma'am" instead of "what" or "yo" or "huh". We live in AR and don't hear it as much as I wish we did.
  19. I am finding that my 1st grader needs me about 3/4 of the time. There are a few things that I can explain and walk away for a bit. However mostly he needs me sitting right next to him. It is challenging and I love it! We came from Saxon 1 which was NOT challenging to him at all. This is the kind of math I was wanting for him!!
