we use lively latin and it is fairly independent, especially for that age. we also used greek code cracker that my dd did independently.

we have used and enjoyed logic safari and logic countdown/liftoff

i learned them to the tune of ten little indians.

we have a sticker chart with a line for each subject. as we move through our day she gets a sticker if the subject was completed in a reasonable amount of time and with a good attitude. when she fills the chart, there is a reward of some sort.

not wrapping my brain around how exactly this would work, but it sounds intriguing and i'm always looking for fun math experiences for my math hating daughter. i'd love to try it out.

Anyone know when it's expected to be finished? I am having the hardest time deciding on a geography curriculum. I really like the looks of this one, but am hesitant to delve into something that may end up being incomplete. I couldn't find anywhere WHEN the last books are coming out. Help?

my kids must do their morning chores before they are allowed to eat breakfast. morning chores are get dressed, take care of jammies, make bed, brush hair and teeth. after breakfast they do their table chores (clear table, sweep floor, unload dw). before lunch is a half hour pick up time- each is assigned a room. after lunch is table chores again (cleaning counters instead of dw). after dinner is table chores (sub take out trash for dw and counters) and bedtime routine, which includes picking up their room and a bathroom chore (wipe vanity/sink, clean toilet, pick up floor/tub). they do other things as asked throughout the day.

yes. by mid afternoon i go into sensory overload and have to either kick them outside, put on a movie, or send them to their room to play.

i haven't read the circe threads so i don't know if there's something special that's supposed to happen during this time, but i remember big discussions going on a few years ago about "morning baskets" that i liked the idea of so i implemented it. recently it's been afternoon, but we start our school time with group work- devotion, Bible verse, character/virtue, rhythmic writing, handwriting, and an extra or 2- poetry (reading and writing), music, letter writing, global studies, nature reading, art, etc.. then we transition to schooltime with a 15 minute nature assignment (go out and look at clouds, find a new bug, etc) 4 days a week and cooking 1 day. this is my kids' favorite part of school.

following. i was planning on joining in my 5 and 6yo's with odd this year on sotw3, but they have NOT been listening in the last 2 years and i am planning on doing in depth american and state history in middle school so i wasn't sure how that would play out with the youngers. maybe i should just start them at sotw1 and keep the same cycle going...

we like the mike venezia books. there are artists, composers, historical figures, etc.

your story sounds just like my current 6yo. she desperately WANTED to read, but could not recognize letters (names or sounds), even after 18 months of intense work. i also wavered back and forth about whether she just wasn't ready (she was not quite 5) or if there was truly a problem that needed to be addressed. i got my answer when one day at the lunch table my now 9yo started quizzing her on "what does the _ say?" and she was able to answer 98% of them. it was right then i knew there was some sort of visual disconnect going on and i finally felt peace about getting her tested. in a series of events orchestrated only by God, we had her tested and she failed across the board. she has been in an early intervention program for the last 18 months and can identify all her letters, read sight words, cvc words, and is sounding out longer words. she was recently retested and is only failing still in one area. she was also c=given a different test and scored right on or slightly above grade level in everything but spelling. check into NILD (national institute of learning disabilities) and see if there's somewhere near you that offers their services. it is much less expensive than the other testing/therapy. she loves going and has improved so much.

if money was no object i would like to have each of my kids in something active and something artsy. unfortunately that is not the case right now (and with 5 kids likely never will be). my oldest wants to sew so we've set up inexpensive lessons with a friend. number 2 is in an early intervention program and needs vision therapy. unfortunately those are her activities. number 3 is a natural and talented gymnast. like to the point that coaches fight over her. number 4 is looking to be our musician. she has natural rhythm and gravitates toward singing and instruments. but we won't be starting her on anything formal for several years. you have to do what works for you and your kids/family/finances. we have friends whose kids go to different camps every week in the summer. i have NO idea how they afford it (camps average roughly $200/week). it's crazy. my kids go to one free vbs a year. it's what we can do. and guess what? they're perfectly happy. don't try to keep up with the joneses. she's young. let her play. :)
