We have had a good steady rain for about 5 hours now. Probably close to 2" so far. I don't think that it has rained like this since Hurricane Ike.

Wheat (or Gluten) Withdrawal?
shalom22 replied to Tiramisu's topic in General Education Discussion Board
:iagree:If you have Netflix, you can watch "Fathead". He gives you some great visual examples of how wheat is handled by the body. He also talks about wheat having addictive qualities. Hang in there. Once you get over this hurdle, you should be feeling so much better. -

Wheat (or Gluten) Withdrawal?
shalom22 replied to Tiramisu's topic in General Education Discussion Board
Well, I don't really have any withdrawl stories. We went cold turkey when we removed grain/wheat/gluten from our diet. As long as we ate plenty of meat, veggies, little bit of fruit and good fats, we didn't have any issues with withdrawls. When you eat wheat, your body treats is like sugar. That is one of the reasons we have 'crashes' after eating a high carb meal. The wheat spikes your insulin, so your body has to work very hard to deal with it. When you remove wheat from your diet, you have removed the 'sugar' that you body has grown used to getting, causing withdraw like symptoms. Try eating a little fruit to ease the withdrawl symptom. -

Congrats! I know that after each summer, I think about moving to a cooler climate. But I don't think I can handle their cold winters any better than our hot summers.

Carbs and a Cascade Inflammatory Response
shalom22 replied to Jean in Newcastle's topic in General Education Discussion Board
Here is another source for infomation regarding wheat and why it causes inflammation. http://holdthetoast.com/content/review-wheat-belly-dr-william-davis This link is a review on this book. The book is called "Wheat Belly" by Dr. Davis. -
Our family has been paleo since November of last year. It has been extremely successful in our house. We were breadbakers, cookie eaters and Pasta lovers, but once we made the change to paleo the change in our health and weight made it worthwhile to stick to it. My husband is the only one that really does any exercise. The kids and I are trying to do more, but its a slow process for us. :001_smile: My son has lost over 70 pounds and no longer has horrible acne. He went from wearing size 38" waist pants to 28" waist. My daughter has always been thin, she didn't lose much weight, but her overall health and acne improved. I have lost 45 pounds. I no longer feel like a very old woman. I have more energy and my skin looks so much better. I went from a size 18 to a size 14. My husband has lost 40 pounds, he went from wearing 36" waist to 32". He is in the best health of his life. You do not have to do crossfit to benefit from a paleo lifestyle. It would depend on your what you life goals are. If you haven't read Robb Wolf's book, 'The Paleo Solution", I would suggest reading it. He does a great job in explaining what paleo is all about. The is a new book out called 'Wheat Belly'. Here is a review on it: http://holdthetoast.com/content/review-wheat-belly-dr-william-davis

The Renfest we have locally has school days in the middle of the one week. All the shows are toned down and family friendly, the costumed actors roaming around are completely clothed and some shops are closed. It makes for a fun time for the whole family. No way would we go to it during the weekend.

Those pesky flies on our front porch
shalom22 replied to naturalhomestead's topic in General Education Discussion Board
I haven't tried this, but my parents do and they claim that it works. They live in northern Oklahoma and the flys are terrible. http://ilovebacteria.com/flies.htm You could try it as an experiment to see if it worked. -
Carbs and a Cascade Inflammatory Response
shalom22 replied to Jean in Newcastle's topic in General Education Discussion Board
There is a chapter in Robb Wolf's book 'The Paleo Solution' that goes into detail about grains and why they cause inflammation. Even if you don't want to eat a paleo type diet, having this information regarding grains is beneficial. -

I have two neices that are 15 and 17. They have been in ps their entire lives. They have decided this year that they want to homeschool. The girls have decided, not their parents. They told me that they are tired of the ps system. They feel like they have been homeschooling the last couple of years because they have had to teach themselves in several of their courses. They don't get anything done in the classroom and have lots of homework. Plus the stress of being in track and band. Both girls made a comment that took me a bit to grasp. Both girls stated that they were not social. Because of the courses they took, plus one was in track, the other in band. They did not have time or the energy to be social. The girls were withdrawling and finding it difficult to function around people. Their mother was very concerned about this change in behavior. Their parents aren't exactly supportive in their decision to homeschool and are sceptical that they will do it. But I am very proud of them for taking their education serious enough to want to do it themselves.

Nutella for those who don't eat dairy!!
shalom22 replied to helena's topic in General Education Discussion Board
We started buying Justins a couple of months ago. My daughter loves it. -
I have lots of yellow and brown leaves in our back yard too. But they are coming from trees that are dying from the lack of water. The woods around here are 30%-40% brown. We won't be having much in the way of fall color this year.

Anybody eat paleo/grain-free?
shalom22 replied to Dianne-TX's topic in General Education Discussion Board
Check out www.everydaypaleo.com she has some great quick and easy recipes. If you haven't read Robb Wolf's book, The Paleo Solution, I would give it a try. I like Sisson's book, but Robb explains it to where I can understand it. The previous posts give you some great meal ideas. We have stopped trying to 'paleo' meals that we used to eat. When we would try to make pancakes, cookies, etc., we were always disappointed. Coconut and almond flour do not perform like wheat flour, so those baked good will not look or taste like what you expect. We have just learned to eat differently. It really is simple, just eat meat and veggies, throw in some fruit and nuts, include good fats like avocado, coconut oil, etc. It does get boring if you don't eat a wide variety of veggies. You will have to get used to cooking more food since you won't have a filler like rice or potatoes. We buy 1/2 cow and bacon from a rancher in west Texas, so our meat cost isn't as high as when we had to buy from the store. I get some veggies from an organic coop, the rest I buy from the store. My grocery bill has been high. But I have been buying snacks for the kids that were rather expensive. We are going to be cutting those out. They will be expected to just eat leftovers or make them something to eat when they get hungry instead of relying on snack type foods. This is not a cheap way to eat, but the improved health in our family is worth it. -
I would love to have that size bed. :D No more feet hanging of the end.

We are starting tomorrow as well. Which reminds me that I need to update my signature. :D Have a great first day.

I have the same problem with the mail. I am currently going through a shredding marathon. I had a pile of stuff dating back to 2008.:001_huh: I think my problem was that my shredder was in my closet. I have now put it out in my school room/dining room area. Maybe, just maybe, I will be able to stay on top of the shredding. As far as what to shred. I open all the envelopes and only shred the parts that contain our name, address or any applications for credit cards. The misc. paper usually incuded in the envelopes just gets thrown away. That makes the actual shredding faster. For passwords, I have a special file that is named something that has nothing to do with passwords or important info. And I only put down the actual password and account info. I don't use the word 'password' in the file. Hopefully that would make it difficult for anyone to search for it.
