  1. This is great! I wish more homeschool conventions would offer things for single homeschool parents. I attended the FPEA convention last year. It had only been 2 months after my divorce was finalized. The theme of the convention was Strong Family (strong marriage,etc....) I knew this when I signed up, but there were several speakers that I really wanted to hear and I needed to get my hands on a few things in the vendor hall to check them out. So I sucked it up and went. (I also went with friends which made it a little easier.) There were several lectures on marriage, families, staying in love while homeschooling, etc. I made sure I completely stayed away from all of those and attended the ones I went there to hear. I did walk away from those lectures refreshed and glad that I had attend. However, it was still a tough weekend. I do believe there was a time during one of the evenings where they were having a small gathering for single parent homeschoolers.(not a luncheon though!! That just sounds great!) However, it conflicted with something else that I was attending so I couldn't go. To be honest, I am not sure that I would have been ready for it yet either. I know we are in the minority when it comes to homeschool families, but I would love to see a couple lectures at the conventions that are targeted for single homeschool parents.
  2. Another single parent/homeschooling mama here. I also work part-time outside of the home. I've only been doing this for about a year and half now. It hasn't really gotten easier, but it's doable. My ds has some learning challenges, so many days I am just completely spent. I have a very supportive family and they have been amazing through it all. I have no words of wisdom to share, however just knowing that you're not the only one doing this helps.
  3. Thank you. I will be pulling everything out this weekend and looking over it.
  4. Thank you nansk. I have a copy of WRTR with the cards still in the book. When I looked at them really quick, they didn't quite look the same, so I wasn't sure. Any chance you could point me towards the bingo cards. I would love to see those. Thanks!
  5. Here is the message that I received from Berean Builders.... Thanks for your email. Our current schedule is to have this available everywhere by April. We hope to debut it at the Great Homeschool Convention in South Carolina. Many things can impact this including weather, required changes to the printing, etc but this is currently our plan. Thanks, Jon ETA: I emailed them at 9:00 at night (eastern time) and he responded to me 3 hours later. Now that's customer service!
  6. Has anyone made their own phonogram cards and used them successfully? Finances are really tight right now. I was hoping I could work with cards I made myself, even if only for a short while. However, I know it can take a while to get the hang of SWR and I don't want to hinder our progress or success.
  7. Oh my goodness, now I might have choices!! I was all set to use the first book in the series for next year. However, we will be doing Ancient History next year. It would be great to do a correlating science. I just emailed the publisher to see when it will be available in the US. I will update when I hear back. Unless someone else already knows.....then please share! :001_smile:
  8. If you join the Mystery of History 1 yahoo group (https://groups.yahoo.com/neo/groups/MysteryofHistory1/info) there is a section in the files that has notes on each lesson already done for you. Just look under the memory card tab in the files once you are approved. You may find a lot of helpful extras there. ETA: I see now that you are half way through volume 1, sorry not sure how I missed that. LOL There is a group for MOH 2 and 3 as well. Just an FYI though, (in case you did not already know) each volume gets more difficult with lengthier lessons. In fact, I would not even attempt volume 3 with younger elementary kids. Just my opinion though. :001_smile:
  9. How about Winston Grammar? It is only grammar, very quick each day, and lots of review.
  10. Oh my word. I have not been on the boards lately due to a super busy schedule. I come back and what do I find....a new curriculum that I really would love to get!! hahaha I can always count on the hive to show me a new curriculum that makes me drool. I guess it's a good thing that funds are tight since we start school on Monday and buying a new curriculum would mean redoing my already made schedule. I will be watching to see what everyone says about starting this as they get it.
  11. How long did you spend on Basic? Did you use it for just one year or did you take longer? Also, did you use the supplemental book with it? I need to place an order for the student book and I am trying to decide if I should get the supplemental too. FWIW....my DS is one usually benefits from review and not moving too quickly. Maybe I just even answered my own question. LOL Still, I would love to hear from others.
  12. I have a question as well.......did everyone find the activity manual answer key necessary or can you do without it?
  13. Anyone else having problems with slow shipping times? Yes, the packages were mailed media mail, but goodness!! I have one package that left Arizona and took 3 days to go to California (?? I'm in Florida) and according to the tracking information, hasn't moved since. The post office estimated it's arrival yesterday. Still not here. I have another package that must be lost somewhere in Montana. That was the last known spot it was and that was 2 weeks ago!! I really hope that these 2 books get here. Both books were very inexpensive, but every little penny counts right now. And the one book I really need so I can see what direction we are going for science. ETA: Sorry.....these books were not bought from anyone here! I purchased them elsewhere. Update......the science book has been marked that it is out for delivery today!!! That is the one that I needed the most at this point. The other, well it is still somewhere in limbo and it was the one ordered a week prior to the science book. Go figure.
  14. I always make my own in Word. I start out by making a schedule for each subject, print it out and put it in a folder. (However some are just do the next thing and I don't plan out a schedule for them, just do x amount of lessons each week) Then I make a master weekly schedule with all subjects listed. I print out one for each week, three hole punch them and stick them in a binder. I just write in what we do each day. I used to schedule it all out nice and neat on the computer and print it out. But too many times, for whatever reason, something would come up and we wouldn't get to something printed out on that week. Then I would be flipping back and forth between 2 weeks pages trying to complete lessons. Not a big deal for some, but it bugged me.
  15. DS (9) used Conquering Cursive this year and did very well with it. Of course what 1st drew me to it was the set up for left-handed students, but I was also very pleased with his progress while using it. They offer a left-handed and right-handed workbook.
  16. Yep, Googled all of that. Just wanted to make sure I wasn't missing anything. LOL Not really finding anything. :tongue_smilie:
  17. What exactly did you Google? I tried all kinds of things. I am thinking they don't exist like this for FL.
  18. How do you get these to come up in PDF form? The only thing I can find on their website is online texts. I would like the Florida version. Thanks
  19. Sonlight is out of my price range too. I have been looking into ES again though. I really like the looks of Exploration Education, but again it's just too pricey. We would need the Intermediate Level - Standard and that's $122+.
  20. And thank you for multi-tasking today. :001_smile: :001_smile:
  21. Thanks for the responses everyone. fairy4tmama looking forward to that explanation. Especially since I can't seem to remember what EM stand for. LOL ETA: I think I got it.....Evan-Moor? After further thinking about it, I really need something right now that is just do the next thing, without having to track down a bunch of books from the library all year long. I know you can buy the entire set for things like NOEO, but that's just out of my price range right now. (single mom only working part time) I will look into Christian Kids Explore series again. I tried it with my daughter and we didn't stick with it. I can't remember now why that was since it was 5 or 6 years ago. In my mind there is this wonderful science curriculum that covers a broad range of topics all in one year - a little Life Science, Earth Science, Physical Science - you get the picture. It is not very wordy and covers just the right amount of information. However, if you touch on a subject that your child really likes, you could explore more with other materials. It would have experiments or hands-on materials already scheduled in. There would be a written component (not over the top) that you could use if you choose. Oh, and it wouldn't cost a small fortune. I'm not asking for much really. :D
  22. Thank you to pineapplehorse and jillian for your responses. Bumping for the morning crowd. Oh, and this is what we have done so far, as I don't really want to repeat again. 1st - Human Body with the My Body book and Usborne and other books (we will go into a more in depth study, but not till middle school) 2nd - Apologia Astronomy 3rd - Apologia Flying Creatures (birds and insects)
